Passage to Nyika

Chapter 2

As I walk through the newest section of our town, I am hit by a strong mixture of different emotions. As these people had to make it through the blacklands to get here, many have the rotting sickness. The Nyikains who have been here longer have far worse symptoms of the rotting sickness then the newer ones. As this is an area with much rotting sickness, the healers have set up several healing halls.

Even with all the sickness, pain and abandonment that you feel here, you feel an even stronger sense of gratefulness. The Nzwa Nyikains are just happy to accepted as themselves. They still identified themselves as the slang Nzwa that they other Nyikains labelled them with. I find this odd. I remember from the stories, that the talented used to be called misfits - but banished that name for a much more appropriate title. We are not less or more then others, just talented.

As the mind picture I picked up from Yetu was very vague (mainly telling me what area of New Nyika she lived in) I had to ask for directions several times. When I finally came to her door, she opens it immediately, almost like she's a futureteller and knew I was coming. Something about her is different but I can't put my finger quite on what that is.

I look over her physical fetures trying to find what is different. Yetu looks exactly as I remember her. Her ebony skin so dark that if it were night time you would only be able to see her crooked smile. And her hair in beautiful black tight ringlets that fall from her head. Her eyes so black and welcoming that you feel yourself being sucked in by them.

But there is definately something I can’t put my finger on that is different from the time she was in my school. In the time it took me to take this all in nothing has been said. Yetu breaks the silence.
“It is very fun being around so many Nzwa. All give me that same look. Have you found what my Nzwa gift is?”
“No, I can’t recall coming across your gift. It obviously isn’t beast speaking as you came to my school. Are you an empath?”
Laughingly she tells me “No, I can not sway others’ moods. When in Nyika I didn’t even think I was a Nzwa. But coming here I learned I had one of the best possible. I can cut off my mind from others”

“You have a shield? But I remember hearing your thoughts while you were at my school”.
“Yes I let you see my thoughts. Makes it easier to learn when the teacher sees how well you understand”
“So you can control who and when people see your thoughts?” I asked flabbergasted
“That is correct. I do not even understand how I do it. I just think ‘I want this person to hear now’ or ‘I want all but this one to hear now’ and it is so. But I have nothing that 9+

“But certainly you have a reason you have searched New Nyika for me. Many told me you were coming”
I blush slightly at her straightforward honesty. I almost feel like she will tell me anything if I ask her.
“I wanted to find out more information on Nyika. I was wondering if I could talk to you about this?”
Yetu rests her hand on her chin, tilting her head one way then another, thinking this over. After a second or two her brilliant smile reappears.
“Sure we can talk about this, come right in”
