Why can't there be country music that relates to the Legendsong? In fact, I have a country song. ;) (Oh, and I love the idea of a songwriting comp for the Legendsong - we should DEFINITELY do that sometime!)
Fantastic idea! I find the same thing, that I'm more likely to connect songs to the Legendsong (though also with Obernewtyn), but couldn't decide which forum to put it in. ::) This works well, though. ;D
Great idea for the Darkfall song - it's very nicely done, and I love how you've integrated themes and imagery from the books. I share your interest in the segues, too. ;D
I like Taking Over Me for Lanalor's song - I had Haunted instead, which is kinda the opposite - it's for the Chaos spirit's obsession with him, more than his obsession with Shenavyre. I like yours, it's a bit less dark. :P
I actually have a playlist for the Legendsong - my songs are mainly for specific characters or for couples I ship. I already had a few book quotes noted down in connection with the songs, but I've just added a brief explanation of each song choice. (I've also included the most relevant lyrics for each song - lyrics from
this site.)
"Stand" - Rascal Flatts
My song for Glynna, because she's so strong - no matter what happens, she overcomes it and continues to hope.
YouTubeYou feel like a candle in a hurricane
Just like a picture with a broken frame
Alone and helpless like you've lost your fight
But you'll be alright
You'll be alright
'Cause when push comes to shove
You taste what you're made of
You might bend, till you break
'Cause it's all you can take
On your knees you look up
Decide you've had enough
You get mad you get strong
Wipe your hands shake it off
Then you stand...
"The Impression that I Get" - The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
This is my second song for Glynna, more tongue-in-cheek, but with the same idea behind it.
YouTubeHave you ever been close to tragedy
Or been close to folks who have?
Have you ever felt a pain so powerful
So heavy you collapse?
No? Well...
I never had to knock on wood
But I know someone who has
Which makes me wonder if I could
It makes me wonder if
I never had to knock on wood
And I'm glad I haven't yet
Because I'm sure it isn't good
That's the impression that I get.
Have you ever had the odds stacked up so high
You need a strength most don't possess?
Or has it ever come down to do or die
You've got to rise above the rest?
"Lightning Crashes" - Live
My song for the she-feinna. Lightning Crashes relates to the cycle of life, and the transfer of one life to another.
YouTubeLightning crashes, a new mother cries
Her placenta falls to the floor
The angel opens her eyes
The confusion sets in
Before the doctor can even close the door
Lightning crashes, an old mother dies
Her intentions fall to the floor
The angel closes her eyes
The confusion that was hers
Belongs now, to the baby down the hall
Oh now feel it comin' back again
Like a rollin' thunder chasing the wind
Forces pullin' from the center of the earth again
I can feel it...
"Behind These Walls" - Kerry Ellis
I recently found this song for the Ember that lies behind dark Ember. If you hear the whole song, the circumstances are clearly different, but I like to think of it as her song for Glynna; the "walls" are of course her indifference.
YouTubeBehind these walls
I won't grieve
Behind these walls
My heart won't feel a thing
Behind these walls
Nothing will get through
Behind these walls
I'm not missing you.
...
Behind these walls
You're still here with me
Behind these walls I'm living
Behind these walls I'm breathing
Behind these walls I'm not missing you
"How to Save a Life" - The Fray
My song for Glynna's last evening with Wind. She would have done anything to save him, but she didn't know how.
YouTubeStep one you say we need to talk
He walks you say sit down it's just talk
Smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through
Some sort of window to your right
She goes left and you stay right
Between the lines of fear and blame
And you begin to wonder why you came
Chorus:
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
"Everybody's Fool" – Evanescence
This song represents how Glynna felt during/after the wing ceremony, when she was cut up by Solen's words, and believed she had been deluded in her impression of him.
YouTubewithout the mask where will you hide?
can't find yourself lost in your lie...
"The Dolphin's Cry" – Live
I love this song for Solen, and his feelings for Glynna: "The way you're bathed in light / Reminds me of that night." (The lyrics echo Solen's words: "when I saw you standing at the hall as golden and shining as the flame of a candle...") The other lyrics evoke Solen's longing for Glynna, and his certainty that they will be together again.
YouTube"Learn to Fly" – Foo Fighters
This song makes me think of Glynn's desperation to find a way home, and to return to Ember. And of course, the ability to fly has a strong connection with Keltor and a certain windwalker! :P
YouTubeAnd I'm looking to the sky to save me
Looking for a sign of life
Looking for something to help me burn out bright.
I'm looking for a complication
Looking 'cause I'm tired of lying
Make my way back home when I learn to fly
I even have songs for some of the segue characters:
"Imaginary" - Evanescence
This is Sean's song - the redhead who used to live near Ember and Glynna. Imaginary is evocative of the vivid dream that Sean had before going to see Shadow: "The dream was so richly intense and so densely embroidered in detail that it was like drinking some sort of narcotic elixir."
YouTubeIn my field of paper flowers
And candy clouds of lullaby
I lie inside myself for hours
And watch my purple sky fly over me
"Hallelujah" - k.d. lang
The lyrics of this song are perfect for Bonny (the jogger who found Wind's "suicide note"). It's the song of someone who had first been intoxicated with the excitement and newness of love, but is now disillusioned and alone. It symbolises the disintegration of her relationship.
YouTubeMaybe I've been here before.
I know this room, I've walked this floor.
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch.
Love is not a victory march,
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah.
Hallelujah, Hallelujah...
