Haha, how cool would it be if all the fans got together and made the movie happen? I'm a screenwriter, and Australia's system really isn't that complicated. It's a money thing though. I've got $5.50, anyone else up for it?
That would truly be epic.
Hehe ... I like how no-one answered when I was actually kinda serious :P
XD yay! Let's do it :P
Hmm, yeah - I remember going to a panel where two Aussie directors were saying how the Australian film industry are extremely hesitant to fund genre pieces :( so...we may have to take the idea abroad :P

It was at Supanova Sydney, a couple of weekends ago. The panellists were The Spierig Brothers (Daybreakers) and they were talking about the lack of interest and woes they have had in the past getting the Aus industry interested in genre - so much so that they had to take their last films to the US for funding (and while using Aussie actors, had to get them to do American accents, since that then became their target market).
But I'm all for change! :D And yes, I have no idea why if a movie about...shark-attacked-tsunami-victims ( o_O ) can get made, why an Obernewtyn adaption can't either.
(I wonder how hard it would be to option the rights to make it, at least?)
I'm all for an obernewtyn Movie :D
the bad thing would be if it suuuuucks D=
YEAH! That'd be AWESOME! If it could happen. :P
I agree M what if it doesn't work out? That would be terrible!
But it's a good idea! I've got like $7.00 if that would help.
*shakes out wallet* I have a total of... $2.75 to contribute :D
So, we have a total budget of $15.25 :P Excellent!
Of course it would work out :P We'd be excellent movie directors!
You know we'd all be making cameos as 'Random misfits #1, 2 and 3' or something XD

And it would go down on wikipedia as the greatest fan movement ever. :P
Ah! The Spierig Brothers! Those nasty guys who didn't get back to me about my panel :P I think such occurrences may be a factor in Screen Australia changing their funding policies a little - we don't want the only good Australian films being made in America, that kinda sucks. We could get funding from Sador maybe? A cross production?
What would everyone do? What kind of fancy talented people do we have here?
As for optioning, I wonder what IC would think of this if we came to her saying Obernet was going to make the film! Haha! We'd have to be superserious and committed and all that ... but hell, I have nothing else going on ... haha.
... oh, also ... it wouldn't suck, we're too awesome.
it would be so amazing if obernet could make this happen.
UH-MAZ-ZING
and i agree Rodwen Eluthin, we are awesome.
I quite literally could get a hold of scriptwriters and video editing people without any trouble (pretty sure they aren't employed yet...). One of the script writers i know is a fellow Ober lover but not an Obernetter. Video effects would be harder and tbh you'd want pro's who are expensive :P
Alternatively, we make a mind-blowingly AWESOME handicam version, shoot it off to someone with big pockets and be all "You know it's awesome so fund it and you'll be awesome too!"

Are people still up for this? I currently have $20.75 in my wallet :P
I'm not fancy talented, but back in high school, I was involved in making a couple of low budget documentaries. I was mostly involved in the filming and editing aspects. I'd edited a good third to a half of the second one before the computers went down and everything was lost. The people that were making it had to go back to the tapes and they completely took it in another direction after that, but I'm still really proud of what I did on the first draft, even if nobody got to see it ^^; I also did some filming and film/music editing in music tech class in highschool.
Ness and Rodwen probably know people that are a lot better at it than I am, but I'd still love to help :)
But also, those two docos I talked about, I know we used two hand-helds (although one had a tripod :p), I can't remember if we had a proper camera as well or not. If we didn't, I think we could pull off a proper looking production without one, because I just watched the first one again, and while some scenes were washed out, others were really fantastic.
I think I'll email some people and see if they still have the film records and how much they spent on equipment.
I'm not comfortable just putting up a link to the docos, but if anyone in MO wants to see them I'd be happy to PM it :)

Ill kick in $10 a fortnight.
Depending on how the finacial side is arranged, if nothing else it can go down as a tax offset. :P
Id offer more but no job= poor. On the other hand I have plenty of time to offer...
I also have some ametuer filming and editing experience, and am decent with Ulead media sudio pro.
I acted my way through high-school and have done some small stuff since, but not for camera, so i dont know how i would go there.
There are several suggestions in the movie ideas forums about adapting the books as an animated series. The idea has merit, especially on a low budget and makes showing misfit abilities a lot simpler.
My only other question is, copyright. Who owns the options for the film (if anyone) and how amieniable would Isabelle be to the whole idea if the books havent already been optioned?
I've got a few contacts who are interested in filming fantasy stuff. I was thinking I might get my handicam out and do an "obernewtyn scene" one day whether it involves these "contact" friends of mine or not. I have bushland near me I can use. I will probably end up doing it summer time. I'll have to work around that to find a scene in one of the books that relates to such a setting.

I retract my statement. If we were making the movie it would be definitely awesome! :D I've done a little bit of acting in my very short life so I could be a walk on misfit or orphan. :P
Second-hand equipment sounds do-able and realistic. So if we are really serious is anyone among us a producery person? Rodwen you said you were a screenwrite so that's score one for us.
Wow, it would great if we could actually do this. :D But its sooo big. How would we organise it all?
By the way, I found a hidden stash of $12.00 in a box in my room so our total is now around $58 with one fortnight of Hannai's payments. We're getting there. :nods:
I think that this would be a great idea. I'm just wondering how we would portray the misfit abilities. I remember watching The Golden Compas, then reading the His Dark Marterials trilogy, then watching the movie again and thinking how badly they portrayed the compas (which's name I cannot remember).
Haha this is great! I'm a 1/3rd qualified Graphic Designer, so I could do all the Movie posters! and opening credits!
Also there are a lot of fan funded series on YouTube so you could start there and then maybe do a full on movie later.
Re the copywrite, Isobelle owns it, so I guess it goes through her. However don't books have to be 'optioned' in order to become a movie? The way I think it works is it's like a lease - you lease the rights to make the idea into a film for a year, once that lease is up you either re-option or let it expire (and someone else may option it in years to come).
Heh I just thought I'd mention since this thread is active again that one of my work colleages has his own production company, production team, amazingly expensive/professional filming equipment and loads of contacts. they were the guys who did the winning entry in Good Game's zombie comp last year, they've done some film clips, and they're currently working on a short film for (hopefully) the Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF) next year. He's going to be passing me a script for it for continuity editing shortly too. He's a great guy to work with, very funny and geeky and a genius when it comes to filming, editing film, post-production effects, everything.
Anyway my point is: he would be my suggestion.
If we are utterly serious about exploring this, step 1 would be to find out what the deal is with optioning a book for film translation is, step 2 would be to talk to Isobelle about it (she may not want it to be a movie, and if that were the case I'd not want to go against her wishes).
Assuming it's all good I think the next step is a sort of project brief, to take to collaborators and producers, incl things like budget estimates, required crew, synopsis, location scouting and permission to film in locations, insurance costs - things to take to anyone you want on board who hasn't heard of the project.
Once it gathers some interest then I'm guessing comes fundraising to buy the option, and then to pay for the expenses, and the hard work. And as for profit? We could do what the Browncoats:Redemption team did - and donate all/any profits to charity.
So can anyone out there investigate optioning? I can talk to Isobelle after that has been sussed out.
Great idea!!!!!
it would be sooooooo awesome to have a obernewtyn movie.... only problem is what about the actors... Obernetters could be extras but what about the main roles? we would want to have good actors...
And then there’s the makeup and the costumes and props and sets and heaps of other equipment....
Would the profit of the film cover the expenses? Fund raising is a good idea, but would we get enough...
Also i was thinking is Isobelle wanted to make a film, maybe she would like to make it with us... contribute to the costs and receive profit... if we had her helping we could make a better production, something that would be a popular movie...
Just some thoughts... hope we can do it...
I may be behind and missing something but I was just wondering if any more thought/actions have been made towards this happening?
It would be really cool to see something come out of this, even if it was just an animation, or a scene of some of our favourite moment's. Something solely produced by the fandom. . .it's be pretty Epic. On another note, I can throw in $50 at least. :)
Hey guys, any updates on the movie? I am very keen on seeing an A grade film of Obernewtyn, only if Isobelle wishes it to be so. It'll make her and all involved more money and if done right would be fantastic.
Isobelle does want it to be a movie, but it is difficult to get it to that stage. She has to find someone willing to do it. I know she would love Peter Jackson (I think, guy who did LOTR) to be the director.
