She knows that darkness is looming and discovers that the troll king is plotting something. Sett Owl learns that Little Fur is the reason for his plotting.
Meanwhile, Little Fur is healing animals in her wilderness home and does not notice the storm approaching. When it starts to rain, Little Fur and her patient retreat to the sheltered hollow of a tree. Little Fur reflects on her many small forays into the city to plant seeds in an attempt to increase the flow of earth magic there. Eventually she falls into a broken sleep.

Crow finds Little Fur and scolds her for not returning to the protection of the Old Ones. After harvesting and planting some seeds with her hare assistant Tillet, Little Fur begins healing the animals that have come to her after the storm. She heals many animals – a frog, rabbit, mole, hawk, tomcat and a seagull. After flying over the city, Crow reports that the storm did much more damage there than it did in the wilderness, causing fires and flooding. Little Fur’s old friend Ginger then appears and spits out a small bundle of dirty feathers. After Little Fur’s initial reaction of shock, she realises that the small bundle is a baby owl.

This amazes Little Fur as Ginger could have easily made a meal of the tiny creature, but instead he carried it to her for healing. Little Fur asks Crow whether he could visit the owls in the city to spread the word that she has a baby owl that must have fallen from a nest. Crow refuses, saying that all owls hate crows due to the Sett Owl being attacked by them when she was just a fledgling. Little Fur asks a starling to carry the news instead, but as the day progresses and no owls arrive, she assumes that the bird forgot the message.
Little Fur soon decides that she must travel into the city once more to speak to the Sett Owl about the little owlet. Crow is originally opposed to the idea, but when Little Fur leaves the safety of the wilderness, he is there waiting for her, as is Ginger. The three set off along the now familiar route to the beaked house. When Little Fur reaches the pipe she usually uses to travel under the first road she must cross, she finds it almost completely full of rainwater runoff. Giving her precious seed bags to Ginger, she braves the cold water and traverses the pipe.

The little elf troll then passes through a pear orchard filled with goats and has a conversation with a fiery kid. After communing with a pear tree she previously took some seeds from, Little Fur plants a seed at the edge of a poisoned patch of land hoping to draw the earth magic into the damaged ground. Satisfied with her small accomplishment, Little Fur proceeds to the beaked house with Ginger and Crow. After flying over the grounds of the beaked house, Crow declares that there are a great number of owls gathered and he must flee as he thinks they could be massing to launch an attack on all crows. Little Fur climbs through onto the grounds of the beaked house and finds that there are indeed many of owls present, as well as a crowd of animals gathered at the entrance of the tunnel that leads into the beaked house where the Sett Owl resides. Gazrak, the Sett Owl’s assistant, is blocking the entrance.

This causes great unrest in the gathered animals who deem it unfair considering the risks they all took when journeying to the beaked house. Gazrak maintains that there is nothing that can be done until the convocation is over. At Ginger’s suggestion, Little Fur tries to talk to the owls in the trees outside the beaked house, asking them whether they know of an owl who lost a chick during the storm. After speaking with numerous owls, Little Fur receives only one answer – owls do not become attached to their eggs or young chicks as they are only tentatively attached to life. When an egg or baby owl falls from a nest, the owl mother sees it as lost because the chance of survival after such a fall is minimal. Little Fur decides she must wait for the convocation to end after all so that she can speak with the Sett Owl. Restless, Little Fur walks around the beaked house and sees a large male fox sitting by the steps. She can smell illness and infection about the fox, but when she offers her help, the fox hauntingly declines. Little Fur learns that the fox wants to see the Sett Owl to ask how it might die as it wishes.
Troubled, Little Fur goes back to Ginger and falls asleep. Ginger wakes her when the owl convocation is finished, and Gazrak selects Little Fur, the fox, and two other animals to see the Sett Owl. Together they enter the beaked house, Little Fur remaining at the end of the tunnel in order to remain in contact with the earth magic. After gathering the offerings of the other animals, Gazrak discovers that the fox brought nothing to give to the Sett Owl and tries to make him leave. Little Fur offers some mushrooms as the fox’s offering, a gesture which the fox does not appreciate. The arrival of the Sett Owl puts an end to his protests. After dealing with the other animals, the Sett Owl tells Little Fur that she cannot help Little Fur or the owlet Ginger found. She then turns to the fox and he asks how he can overcome his strong survival instinct and die. The Sett Owl states that this is not impossible unless he undertakes a dangerous task that he can dedicate his life to, so much so that he would be willing to sacrifice his life in order for the quest to be fulfilled. The Sett Owl says that she needs someone to protect an expedition of spies who will travel into Underth, the realm of the troll king, in order to discover his dark plans. Two ferrets have already volunteered to be the spies, and the Sett Owl states that as Gazrak was born in Underth and will be immune to its foul magic, he will be their guide.

Summary:Gazrak is unwilling to be the guide of the expedition to Underth and after pleading with the Sett Owl, runs out of the beaked house. The Sett Owl tells the fox more of the mission, saying that it must leave when day breaks in order to miss the travelling troll king and his army. Sett Owl also says that she has forseen that one of their party will betray them, and the fox takes this news cynically, thinking that the expedition is sure to fail, ensuring his much wanted death.
The Sett Owl then speaks to Little Fur of the owlet once more. She states that as the baby was rescued by Ginger and then by Little Fur herself, it has been set on a path away from its own kind. It is now Little Fur’s responsibility. After brewing a tisane for the Sett Owl, she starts seeing to the fox’s wounds, something which the fox only submits to as he would otherwise be no help to the expedition. Little Fur discovers that the fix is covered in wounds and scars, all at different stages of healing. Due to their neat nature, Little Fur assumes that the wounds were inflicted by humans and that the fox had been caged and treated cruelly all its life. The fox tells Little Fur that his name is Sorrow and goes outside to sleep. Little Fur brews a tisane for the Sett Owl and for Sorrow to take on the Underth expedition. The Sett Owl knows that Little Fur is curious about the fox but says that any questions she has should be directed to the fox himself.

Sorrow explains the expedition to Ginger, and he falls in beside Little Fur, though she hopes he will not accompany them for the entire expedition. Crow overhears Sorrow’s explanation and opposes the idea, telling Little Fur that she should return to the Old Ones and the wilderness. Little Fur is sorry but remains steadfast in her decision. Led by Gazrak, the group set off into an older part of the city, but they eventually come to a road across which Little Fur must find a way to travel that keeps her in contact with the earth magic. The group split up, Gazrak, the ferrets, and Sorrow going ahead leaving Ginger and Little Fur. After the others have gone, Crow lands and again tries to convince Little Fur to return to the wilderness. She says that she can’t and asks Crow to fly up and help find a way across the road. Little Fur eventually crosses the road and is met by Sorrow who says that there is a dog in the lane in which the troll hole is. Gazrak and the two ferrets managed to make it down the hole, but Sorrow will have to fight it to get past. Little Fur is terrified. When she sees the dog, she recognises it as the one who once swore to kill her.

The dog escaped her enclosure and followed the smell of cat to the lane. The dog tells Sorrow that he and Ginger may pass unharmed as it is only Little Fur that she is interested in. Sorrow says that Little Fur is part of a quest that he is sworn to protect, so in order for the dog to get to Little Fur, he must first go through him. Sorrow also says that the dog should be grateful of the hate and revenge that burns inside her because it gives her purpose and that once the dog has carried out her revenge, she will feel cold and empty. The dog seems to be in a trance, but jolts out of it and lunges for Little Fur after Crow caws above them. Ginger and Sorrow attack the dog, but Little Fur soon yells for them to stop as she is scared for the dog’s life. The fox and cat stop their attack, and the dog asks Little Fur why she would be afraid of her dying when she wants Little Fur dead. Little Fur merely replies that she is a healer. Crow then warns the group that humans are coming. The black dog bounds away, and Sorrow, Ginger and Little Fur hide in a garden until the humans and their road beast have gone. Little Fur is ashamed of the fear she feels and thinks Sorrow will scorn her, but he says nothing.
The group proceed out into the lane again and head down the troll hole where Gazrak and the ferrets are waiting. Little Fur says a sad goodbye to Crow who she tells to go back to the wilderness and help look after the baby owl. The group travel through many tunnels and caverns, all made by humans but reeking of both humans and trolls. After a close encounter with an underground road serpent, the group finally enter tunnels in which humans do not go. During a short break, Little Fur makes sure everyone in the group rubs some leaves given to her by the Sett Owl onto their paws. This will hide their scent from trolls. Travelling once more, Little Fur notices the traces of once beautiful writing and carving on the walls of the tunnels which Gazrak says were made by trolls. Little Fur is surprised by this as she believed trolls to be primitive creatures with no sense of beauty. Gazrak smells a troll approaching and the group hide in one of the many crevices along the walls of the tunnel. The troll stops outside their hiding place allowing Little Fur to get a close look at the creature. Luckily, the troll does not realise that Little Fur and her companions are there.

Summary:The group continue travelling through the troll tunnels heading for the troll city of Underth. Along the way they have to constantly hide from passing trolls, none of whom notice their presence. As they get closer to Underth, they begin travelling through chambers after which the path splits into three. In each of these chambers is troll magic designed to ensnare intruders. In the first chamber of this type, the members of the group go into a trance but are soon awoken by Gazrak. As he was born in Underth, the troll magic has no effect on him. In the second chamber, everyone in the group becomes drowsy and wants to sleep but Gazrak moves them on again. In the final chamber, Gazrak is uncertain as it has changed since he was last there. Sensing that there is no troll magic at work, Gazrak heads down a tunnel, the floor of which soon collapses under him. Gazrak is saved by Sorrow who is holding his tail. The group soon find the correct tunnel and set off again. Coming out of the tunnels and into a great cavern, the group get their first glimpse of Underth.

Due to the strength of the current, the group are unable to cross at the ford and instead have to use an old bridge in the rock behind the waterfall itself. From his reluctance to use either the bridge or the ford, Little Fur assumes that Sorrow is afraid of water. Eventually, the group tie a rope to their waists connecting them all and cross the bridge. Once on the bridge, Little Fur’s troll blood senses that the bridge was once beautiful, carved by the same trolls who carved the writing on the tunnel walls. Over the bridge, Little Fur wishes to rest but Gazrak says that they must get closer to the city. They stop amidst pools of warm mud. Steam and a greeny yellow gas rises from the pools. After a brief sleep, Little Fur makes a tisane for Sorrow to drink. As Kell and Shikra prepare food for everyone, Little Fur speaks to them and learns that they did not volunteer to be spies as such, but were sent to the Sett Owl by their Great Mother. Nevertheless, they are happy to serve.
After eating, Sorrow and Ginger take Kell and Shikra close to the city so they can begin their spying. Sorrow tells Little Fur to stay with the food, something of which she does not realise the significance until she catches Gazrak trying to get into their meagre food supply. Gazrak runs away with the bag and Sorrow returns. Little Fur cleans his wounds which have become infected and talks to him of the black dog and humans. Little Fur tries to tell Sorrow that not all humans are bad, but Sorrow does not believe her. Musing about Gazrak, Sorrow hopes that this small act was the betrayal foretold by the Sett Owl.

Summary:Sorrow searches for Gazrak but sees no sign of him. He then goes to relieve Ginger who is keeping watch and waiting for the return of the ferrets. After talking with Little Fur, Ginger says that he does not think that Gazrak running away was the betrayal the Sett Owl warned them about. Little Fur realises that her troll blood is affecting more than just her ability to sense the earth and rocks. It has made her more doubtful and suspicious too.
After resting for a while, Ginger goes to relieve Sorrow but finds the fox gone. He returns to Little Fur saying that he could smell Sorrow’s scent trail leading into the city and that he must follow. Little Fur creeps closer to the city and remains watching and waiting for the ferrets in case they return while Sorrow and Ginger are gone. Ginger eventually returns with their old friend Sly who claims that she came down to Underth because it amuses her. Ginger says that he followed the scent of Sorrow and Gazrak (who joined Sorrow shortly after he entered the city) to the palace. Ginger plans to return to the palace as he thinks the others may be in trouble, and Sly says that she will go with him. Little Fur suddenly realises that the leaves used to hide their scent must be wearing off.
After waiting a long time for the others to return, Little Fur decides that she must enter the city. She roughens her clothes and uses dirt to make her hair less bright, intending to masquerade as a troll child. As she is getting ready, Shikra returns in a terrified state. After she has calmed down, she tells Little Fur that she and Kell got into the troll castle and listened to a meeting. In the meeting, the trolls were arguing about who was in charge of the city in the troll king’s absence. A troll named Brod claimed to be in charge as he had done the king a great favour by carrying a cat sickness to the human city above. The trolls also spoke of Little Fur, who they know works against the troll king, and a creature called Indyk. When the ferrets were trying to return, they were captured and taken down into a deep room and put in a cage. There were many other animals trapped in cages, and a bird told Shikra that the troll king liked to hurt them for fun. Sorrow and Gazrak then appeared and Gazrak chewed through the ferrets’ cage releasing them, but the sound of the other caged animals begging for freedom got the attention of the troll guard. Sorrow told the others to run and then attacked the troll. Kell, wanting to be a hero, also attacked the troll and was flung against the wall. Gazrak and Shikra fled. Once Shikra was free, Gazrak returned to the palace yelling for the guards.
About an hour after Shikra’s return, Ginger reappears carrying Kell with Gazrak at his side. He explains that he and Sly mantled themselves in cat shadow and hid in the troll castle long enough to learn that intruders had been captured. Sly knew where prisoners were kept, so the two of them went down and found Gazrak sniffing at an unconscious Kell. Sorrow was already caged. The fox bade them take Kell and leave Underth. In order for Ginger, Gazrak and Kell to escape, Sly created a diversion at the gates, drawing away the troll guards. After their tale is complete, Little Fur can feel everyone looking to her for leadership. She decides that the others must leave via the under-road, leaving a trail for the trolls to follow. She will disguise herself as a troll child, rescue Sorrow, then escape the same way they all entered.

The elf troll waits for the tolling bells which signal that the trolls have found the animals’ trail, then enters the city disguised as a troll child. Little Fur positions herself near the troll castle and watches the guards, trying to figure out a way to get in. No plan springs into Little Fur’s mind and she falls into a troubled sleep. When she wakes, Little Fur sees a great group of trolls milling about being given orders by a huge troll. Little Fur realises this is Brod. The trolls soon leave and Little Fur decides that she must go around the side of the castle and see if there is a servant’s entrance she could creep through. Just as she is about to get up, Sly comes up to her. After discovering Little Fur’s intentions, Sly says that she will help Little Fur reach Sorrow.
Sly hurries into the castle and just as Little Fur is wishing she asked the cat what she was going to do, a group of trolls rush out towards Little Fur. They can smell the elf blood in her. The trolls lead Little Fur into the castle down to the room filled with cages. Little Fur is shoved into a cage and left. After a while, Little Fur detects Sorrow’s scent and talks to him. The fox tells Little Fur that the troll king thinks that Little Fur is the earth spirit’s chosen warrior. After she asks, Sorrow begins to tell Little Fur the tale of his life.
Sorrow was born in a machine and the only warm living things around him were humans. To start with, Sorrow yearned to form a connection with the humans, but they felt nothing for him and did not smell of love. Another human entered Sorrow’s life and Sorrow formed a bond with him. Then however, the human started to hurt him. At first, Sorrow though that these were accidents, but then he smelt that the human was interested in Sorrow’s reactions when he was being hurt. Sorrow bided his time and escaped. Sorrow falls into a fevered dream at this point, but Little Fur can guess the rest of the story. She realises that Sorrow thought that the humans had stolen his life in the outside world from him, and there was no point of him seeking out other foxes to bond with as he was only a fox in form. Little Fur cries, and when Brod comes into the room, she thinks that nothing could hurt her more than Sorrow’s story. Walking at the troll’s side however, is Sly.

Sly tells him that it is Little Fur in front of them, and the troll king would most likely be very angry with anyone who hurt her before he did. Brod takes some convincing, but he and Sly soon leave, thinking to use Little Fur as a gift to the troll king when he returns.
After Sly and Brod have gone, a monkey in the cage below Sorrow’s talks to Little Fur. He says that the place Sorrow spoke of is a human experiment house and that he was once kept in one. He planned his escape, but before he could get away, he was taken by the trolls. Little Fur can’t believe that trolls would enter a human experiment place, but the monkey explains that a greep who used to work there told the troll king about a sickness in a bottle. The troll king wanted this sickness, but when the greep saw the writing on the monkey’s cage, he made them take the monkey too. The monkey explains that he carries the antidote to the sickness in his blood, though Little Fur isn’t entirely sure what this means. After this conversation, Little Fur thinks more on Sly’s actions, and the more she thinks about it, the more she is convinced that the cat has a plan to save them and hasn’t really betrayed Little Fur at all.
Trolls come to get Little Fur and she is taken back up to Brod and a great gathering of trolls. Brod is giving a speech about how happy the troll king will be when he returns and finds that they have captured Little Fur. They then make their way to the entrance of the under-road, but a roaring noise makes the trolls uneasy. Sly, who is still with Brod, yells that it is a pack of dogs and the trolls should run for their lives. Trolls are terrified of dogs. In the confusion, the troll holding Little Fur lets go and, at Sly’s instruction, hides in a nearby crack in the rock. Little Fur falls into a doze but is woken by Crow. Crow says that Sly told him that they must wait for the trolls to pass once more, then they can make their escape.
Once the trolls have passed, Crow and Little Fur make their way to a crack that leads to the surface. Little Fur can hear something following them, and after worrying that it might be rats or more trolls, she turns to find it is Sorrow. Sorrow says that Sly came down and released all the animals from their cages. Once the three reach the crack in the wall, they meet the black dog who had previously wanted to kill Little Fur. It was she who barked so ferociously to scare the trolls. Sorrow is weak, so the black dog carries him draped over her back. Little Fur asks the black dog why she came down to Underth, and the dog replies that she wants to know Little Fur secrets. After she had evaded the humans chasing her, she returned to the troll hole to find Crow. She told Crow of a way he could get into Underth using his wings, and the two of them travelled down, met Sly and came up with the plan to free Little Fur. The group travel back up to the surface, but when they get there Little Fur sees that Sorrow is dying.

The Sett Owl comes out of the beaked house and Little Fur tells her the little they managed to find out about the troll king’s plan. At the mention of Indyk, the monkey who spoke to Little Fur when they were both caged in the troll’s castle says that her name is Indyk. She says that the troll king planned to use the stolen sickness in a bottle to cause madness and disease in the humans whose actions would then help to destroy the earth spirit. Indyk states that as he had lost her, the antidote to the sickness, he wouldn’t dare using it as trolls can become infected as well. The Sett Owl asks Indyk if she would like to live at the beaked house with her, and Indyk accepts.
Although she thinks him dying, Little Fur starts to clean Sorrow’s wounds. When she is done, she thanks the black dog for all she has done for them and invites her to visit the wilderness. After the black dog has gone, Little Fur sings the song of their journey into Underth, wanting the earth spirit to know that Sorrow has been a true warrior. Sorrow then wakes, and Little Fur can feel that his spirit is now as bright and a star and will not let the wounds of his body kill him.
