The sky began to lighten as the sun rose over the desert. It was dawn. It was time for the Battlegames to commence.
Faadri addressed the men and women gathered, clustered in two teams of ten. “Today marks the beginning of a new tradition. Kasanda walked among many years ago and her disciples forbade war. Yet it has been a difficult task for many to achieve for disputes are frequent and violence seems the best response. The overguardian,†he gestured at the figure sitting at his feet, “has designed these games, these Battlegames that disputes may be solved with little or no bloodshed and one may be tested, in courage, wit, strength or honour.†Pausing, he surveyed the Sadorians. “Let the earthgoddess decide which Battlegame shall commence first.â€
Rising gracefully the overguardian handed Faadri two cubes with marks on each face. The dice were tossed into the air and Faadri counted the number of marks facing the sky.
“Five. The first game you will play is The Gate.†He tossed the dice again. “Choose five in your team and follow me.†Without waiting he made his way into a small tent and held the flap open.
Team Oberon huddled.
"I forsee that we can win this," Frances piped up first.
Syl gave the bright-eyed Futureteller a strained look. "Do you forsee what The Gate battlegame may involve?" he asked, after a pause.
Frances' shoulders slumped, ever so slightly. "Um...no."
Syl, assuming the position of leader (nobody minded) continued. "Then we'd best not hedge our bets on Futuretelling alone," and then addressing us all again, "What do you think The Gate could mean?"
"We should send Albert and Stephanie," Rosa indicated the two Beastspeakers in our team.
"What? Why me?" Albert then indicated his frail-looking, blonde twin. "And why her?!"
"I don't mind," Stephanie wheezed. The tiny twin of Albert had suffered a bit of altitude sickness, while travelling over the pass from Obernewtyn to Sador. "I want to be useful. I'll go."
With that it was only a matter of time before a worried-looking Albert agreed to his nomination.
I mentally nudged Rosa in the mind while Syl continued leading discussion on who the other three team members would be to take on Team Titania's chosen five.
"Why did you nominate them?" my farsaught question carried a touch of incredulity.
Rosa mentally shrugged, "I just thought, being Beastspeakers and working on the farms, they'd be good at constructing fences."
It actually was a surprisingly clever reason, and that was saying something for Rosa. The tall Farseeker didn't usually think anything through before shooting her mouth off.
"Right," I farsaught a reply. "What if The Gate isn't about building a gate?"
"Well, I hadn't thought that far."
I smirked at Rosa and she gave me a pleading 'oh-stop-it' look, but we re-raised our shields.
"It's settled then," Syl was saying as Rosa and I re-entered the conversation. "Alfred and Stephanie, Inanja in case of Coercion, Poppy and Gina. Good luck, Team Oberon."
I admit, I did a double take. Crap. I'd been volunteered while I'd been farseeking Rosa.

Team Titania gazed covertly over their shoulders, trying to garner as much information from Team Oberon as possible.
"It looks like they've chosen that tiny red-head. What a poor move on their part." Sneered Tyson, pointing to the frail Stephanie.
Titania waved him into silence. "Simply because one looks sickly does not mean that they will all fail. The Misfits are more than they seem. Don't lose your head so early in the Game."
Tyson sulked, but held his tongue as the others discussed who should be chosen. Becca snaped her fingers once, to gain the attention of the team. "Right, we don't know what this will require, so we should cover all of our bases. Titania, Robert, Darren, Garret and myself will go."
Though Tyson shifted his feet sullenly, there were no objections.
Faadri motioned with his hands. "Those chosen, please step forward."
Hey guys! A merry Moonfair to you all! ^^;
[ligne][/ligne]
Across the golden sheets of sand, another group of ten young people were huddled together, heads bent. This was Team Titania, who heralded from a country across the seas. They had come searching, and had found the Land, and namely, the Misfits of Obernewtyn. The Misfits had been greatly surprised when the Titanians demonstrated that they had Talents as well, and, partly out of curiosity and fun, the Misfits had challenged them to a face-off, to see who really was better. But had the Misfits known that Titanians are extremely competitive, they might have thought twice...
Leading the group was the unanimously-appointed, wise, red-haired Kenzie, who now gathered his friends around him. "The Gate. I'm not sure what this means, but perhaps we should choose five people who each have a different mindpower, to cover the whole spectrum. What do you think?"
Tall, willowy Dwarf nodded, sky-blue eyes thoughtful. "That's a smart idea, for I, for one, have no idea what The Gate could mean." She turned to a young, blonde-haired boy of sixteen or seventeen beside her. "Do you see anything, Myckell?"
Talented futureteller Myckell reluctantly shook his head. "No, there is only mist, nothing definite."
"I think you, Myckell, for you are a strong futureteller, and you, Uvon, for your valuable coercion-empathic Talents." Kenzie glanced at the Sadorian Faadri, who was waiting by the tent-flap impassively, and then at the other team, who looked like they had nearly reached a decision. "Who else?"
"Yvet," chimed in a young girl's voice. Kenzie grinned down at a little, dirty blonde girl, who looked shyly hopeful.
"Yvet, you may have managed to sneak onto one of the ships to come with me, but that doesn't mean you will participate. These games will probably get dangerous, and I don't want Danger's daughter getting hurt! But then again, your older sister would be a good choice. Two empaths are always useful in confusing the other team."
Yvet's sister Kylyyn nodded seriously. "I believe so. I also think Jared a wise choice, for he may not have any Talent, but he's very strong and lithe."
"Right, so that's Myckell, Uvon, Kylyyn, Jared... and Linda."
Startled, a pretty, elfin-like girl with a sheet of black hair and mischievous grey eyes broke off the conversation she had been having with another girl with frizzy red hair. "W- what? Me? Go into the Battlegames?" She looked morbidly terrified.
Kenzie smiled gently at her. "Yes. Linda, you're a strong farseeker and you also beastspeak exceptionally well. You would be an invaluable part of the team."
"Anyway, you were all hyped up about it back home," cut in Dwarf, a dry smile tugging at her mouth.
"Yeah, but that was before... well, before I saw the other team... I mean, did you see their leader? He looks like he could read your thoughts without using any Talent at all... just with sheer willpower..."
Kenzie sighed a world-weary sigh. "Linda, we've been through this. You have been appointed, okay? So, Jared, Kylyyn, Uvon, Myckell, Linda... the best of luck."
With that, the five young adults nodded, and turned towards Faadri.

Faadri gestured for the ten people before him to step inside the tent.
The chosen members of Team Oberon and Titiana looked nervous as they surveyed the contents of the tent. Three tables stood inside it, covered with deep red Sadorian silk. On one there were weapons—an unsual sight in the peaceful and trusting land of Sador—swords, staves, shields and daggers. Another was spread with building tools. The final table was laiden with household objects: needles, thread, pots and pans, cloth and utensils, among other things.
“You may each choose one implement to aid you in the task.†Faadri eyed them solemnly as the teams exchanged glances.
Darren from Team Titiana was the one to break the silence that followed Faadri’s words. “How are we to choose with no knowledge of what we are to do?â€
Faadri’s lips twitched; he had been waiting for the question from the start. “That is part of the challenge, facing the unknown. Consider carefully, converse with each other and choose.†He stood back beside the exit of the tent and resumed watching.
" Well, I think we would be wise to take a selection from each table. Take only something that can be used for multiple purposes. We don't know what will follow so we would be silly to take an unnecessary chance." I told my team quietly.
Gina nodded, "I agree. Although," she hesitated for a moment, I felt suddenly uneasy. "I think I know what I'm going to pick. It's calling to me. I don't think you'll like it very much."
I couldn't help the raised eyebrow. Gina's talents were still manifesting and her increasingly frequent premonitions were a sign of that. She generally sensed the strangest things at the strangest times though, like someones sock going missing in the laundry or the colour of the food being served for that nights dinner. Since when did she sense something useful.
She walked slowly over and grasped a wide but shallow flat bottomed pan with a long handle. Turning with a smile, "Yes this is my choice. It will be useful I promise. I just have this feeling."
Alfred sighed heavily, "If we are building we need tools. If we are fighting something, although I doubt it, tools can be used as weapons, doesn't that make more sense to you Gina?"
"This is the right choice for me." She said it so confidently no one else disagreed. Clearly there could be no convincing her otherwise.

Seems like we are going with Hel's post. I'm also sticking to Alfred as the others have.

Alfred turned to Stephanie with a wry look. "What does she think she can do with a broken bed warmer?" he asked.
"A what?" she replied.
"I learned about them when I spent time with the Teknoguilders last wintertime. In the Beforetime, people put hot ashes in it and put it in their bed to warm the sheets."
Stephanie seemed to think that it would be nice to have warm sheets but then remembered that we were supposed to be choosing. She walked slowly along the tables and stopped in front of a set of kitchen pots.
"I'll take these." She said and moved back to let the others choose.
Team Titania were huddled around the weapons table.

"We must be careful what we choose" Titania said carefully.
"We must pick the strongest weapon" sneered Garrot. "They are all fragile, the stronger our weapons, the easier we shall win!"
Becca stepped forward and smacked Garrot over the head. "Do not make me mad for picking you Garrot" she snarled. "We dont even know what the task is yet"
"Look at the little one, she's picked an old rusted metal thing. What good will that do her?" Darren laughed.
"Do not under-estimate the misfits" Titania said. "As I said to Tyson, they are more then what they seem. Choose your weapon carefully, for we may need them for more then one use"

Robert stood silently, just on the edge of his team, as was his wont. Stepping over to his left, he lifted a peculiarly shaped hammer from the building supplies.
"I have chosen." He rumbled, strangely quiet, yet loud enough to be heard over his companions.
Titania nodded aprovingly at his choice, then strode over to the household items. She only gazed at them a moment before reaching into the jumble of wares to pull out a-
"A chair?" Crowed Tyson, Garret and Darren, disbelieving.
Manni touched Titania's shoulder and asked in his slow, calm voice, "Are you sure, my lady?"
Titania's eyes seemed to aquire a twinkle, wheather from the sunlight or from some other, stranger place, her followers could not ken.
"Aye, I'm sure as the tide, Manni." Was all she would say.
Shannan, with his long, braided crimson hair shining in the morning light, smiled, "If there is anyone who can turn a chair to a weapon, tis m'lady Titania."
He recieved a whack in the stomach for his joke from his sister, Missiona, who could only shake her head.
Tiny El stood on her toes to whisper something in Becca's ear, who nodded and stepped towards the household items gathering. She picked up a simple cooking pan, only as large as her head.
"My choice is also made."

The remaining members of Team Oberon perused the objects before them. Alfred paused in front of a selection of long sticks, made of wood or metal, and selected an iron one with a small point on the end. Stephanie raised an eyebrow at him, but he just shrugged in response. It could serve multiple purposes after all.
Poppy stood back and waited until the others had chosen. Feeling Faadri’s eyes on her and knowing he waited for her to decide, she moved towards the table of household objects and took a metal bucket but its handle. Gina smiled at her decision and gave the slightest nod of approval. Feeling a little more confident in her choice, Poppy’s grip became for confident and she smiled in return.
Inanja hovered by one of the table, hand held slightly above the objects on it. Choosing.
"For Lud's sake, choose something Ina!" Alfred hissed, sideways glancing at team Titania, who had all chosen their objects and were waiting, watching. "What's taking so long?"
Inanja bit her bottom lip, "I'm just considering. I don't need a weapon, obviously," she tapped the side of her head. Inanja was a coercer, and a strong one. "And with your spear, Poppy's bucket, Steph's Pots and Gina's er, bed warmer thing," a slight, amused pause, "there's a lot to consider. What's more useful and could have a function that can't be covered by your other items?"
Alfred had started rolling his hands around for Inanja to finish about half way through her proclamation. Poppy yawned, then looked embarrassed.
Gina decided to intervene, but there were bright spots on her cheeks and her voice came out slightly rushed - her 'futuretelling' may have been inspired by Inanja's 'bed warmer thing' comment. "I forsee that you will get good use out of this," she pointed to a roll of linen material.
Inanja looked unsure a moment, then picked up the roll. "If you say so, Gina...of course, this is on you if it's not."

Garret and Darren stood next to one another, supporting a sheild and wooden planks respectively.
"Excellent, I'm so glad you didn't take too long to make your choice," the sarcasm driped from Missiona's tone, so harsh it could almost be seen shimmering above the desert sand.
Tyson sliped an arm around her shoulders, murmuring quietl, so that their team mates could not hear, "Never mind, Miss, we'll be up next round." Mollified slightly, Missiona suck back into the rear of the group, Tyson following closely.
Titania eyed them both curiously, but said nothing. She sat poised on her chair, as a hawk might just before plunging down a cliffside, gazing over at Faadri, waiting.
Team Oberon stepped forward collectively, now standing level with Team Titania.
Faadri then spoke.
"Those of you not involved in this task, please follow your guides. Those chosen to represent your teams, follow me." He started moving to the east, setting a steady pace.
They followed in double lines; Team Oberon on the right with Alfred at their head, Team Titania on the left led by their namesake. They had only been walking for several minutes before Faadri stopped.
"Here is where I will leave you. Continue on down this path," he indicated the clear, rough path hewn into the rock face, leading down into what was once a deep river bed, "and you will recieve your instructions."
Both teams simply nodded and proceeded single file down to meet their fate.
Faadri watched them go, face devoided of emotion, then turned and strode up a large rocky embankment. He came to a halt in the middle of a cataract, those not participating spread out behind him and those compeating down in front. Speading his arms and speaking so those below and behind could hear him.
"Here is where you will participate in the Game, 'The Gate."

A long pause followed his words, as though Faadri had fallen into a trance. Titania sat down on her chair and the others ranged themselves around here, resting their items on the ground. Faadre coughed several times and stared around himself looking slightly shocked.
"There will be a change." He said as the contestants jumped to their feet. "I have seen."
"Seen what?" Shouted Tyson.
Faadri turned and shook his head. "I have seen that there must be a change."
Syl laughed and said, "You already said that."
Faadri, still looking a little strange from his trance, suddenly sat down on the rock. "The change," he said, "is that the two teams must merge and perform this task together as one team. The Gate must be built, but if all do not work together the task will fail and the enemy will win."
Competitors and watchers alike were shocked by Faadri's proclamation. An angry buzz filled the air as each side tried to talk over the other.
"Stop." Yelled Francis. "He is right! We have to..." before he could finish his sentence, Francis fell to the ground. His face had that look about it.
Thanks Bam, I really appreciate it! ^^; I'll make sure to refresh the page before I post from now on.
[ligne][/ligne]
There was a shocked silence, in which no-one so much as twitched, and then someone screamed. It seemed to be a signal for everyone else, for suddenly there was general pandemonium everywhere. Team Oberon gathered around their comrade, all gabbling at once, unable to believe that Francis was gone just like that. Across from them, Team Titania didn't know what to think, or what to do. They looked a little lost, even Tyson, his usually sharp tongue silenced for the first time. Above them, the Sadorians and other teammates were yelling, some craning their necks to get a better view.
"Silence!"
The voice boomed across the desert, even more effective than a gunshot. The large Sadorian's command was obeyed at once: the Oberons looked up, mouths shut, and Titania's men and women stopped looking at their opponents and instead at this Sadorian.
Sahr was one of the Sadorian elders, a large, commanding figure with a deep understanding of the earth. He now took over from Faadri, in light of recent events.
"We will continue the Battlegame despite what has just occurred. This is according to the rules," he raised his voice as protestation arose from both sides, "and is Sadorian law. Team Oberon will choose another team member to compete, while two Sadorian healers tend to your fallen comrade. There will be no resistance!"
With that Sahr sat down, with the air of settling something once and for all. No-one dared to contradict him.

Team Oberon huddled together mutely, waiting for someone to break the silence and begin the discussion. It was Syl who spoke first, feeling responsible in his role of assumed leader.
“Does anyone have any idea what just happened?†The misfits shook their heads sadly, though Rosa shot a distrusting look at Team Titiana who was huddled together nearby.
Stephanie, noticing Rosa’s look made a sound of dissent. All eyes turned to her, but hers remained focused on Rosa. “It can’t have been them,†she said quietly. “It- it looked like he fell into a deep trance or something. They don’t have the ability to cause such a thing. It couldn’t be helped.â€
“No talent that we know of," Rosa muttered under her breath as the competing members of Team Oberon moved over to where Faardi and Sahr waited.
Team Titiana was already waiting. Sahr rose to address the teams again.

Titania stepped forward first, "I name myself, Titania, and my choice was a sturdy wooden chair."
Becca joined her leader standing out the front of their team, "I am known as Becca, and I have chosen a thick frying pan." She moved over to make room for Robert.
"I am Robert, I have chosen a hammer." Robert proclaimed in his deep, calm voice.
The brothers Garret and Darren both joined the others chosen from their team. Garret spoke, "I am Garret and this is my brother, Darren. I have chosen a sheild and he has chosen wooden planks."
Team Titania stood silently, solemnly waiting for Team Oberon, those chosen at the front, while Tyson, Manni, El, Shannan and Missiona stood behind them, watching.
One by one, the members of team Oberon stepped forward and presented themselves. Though, when it got to Gina’s turn, she seemed slightly unsure of what to say. She turned to look questioningly at Albert and he nodded in response.
“I am Gina and I have chosen a…um…a bed warmer,†she said uncertainly. The members of team Titania snickered and Gina’s cheeks reddened. She stared at her feet, embarrassed and joined the rest of her team. Sahr cleared his throat to get everyone’s attention back on him, though some members of Team Titania were still staring amusedly at Gina.
“Now that both teams are ready, we can finally get on with the game,†Sahr began to explain the rules…
Both Team Oberon and Team Titania soon realised that the core quality that this game tested, and the one which would, indeed, be problematic, was teamwork.
They shifted uncomfortably, with the odd glance in their opponents' direction, as Sahr detailed their goal. "With the rules modified since Faadri's prediction, this is what you must do: you must dig a tunnel into the side of this hill." Sahr indicated the hill that the Sadorian viewers were spread out on, which had been formed long ago from hard, dense sand rather than the loose sand found everywhere else. "Working together, you will gather supplies, carve out your tunnel, and reinforce it if necessary."
"But what's the point in all that?" asked Tyson indignantly.
"The Gate tests co-operation and teamwork, and also, Faadri has said that this tunnel will save us from our enemies." However vague the words sounded, Sahr looked as if he took them very seriously.
Tyson snorted and muttered under his breath, but he didn't challenge the large Sadorian further.
"Remember, you only have until the sun is directly above to complete this Battlegame. You may begin." Sahr moved into the shade of the marquee where all watchers were reclined, watching the foreigners curiously.
Both teams looked at each uncertainly...

Stephanie stepped forward and rather shyly said, " I have a number of pots here. They would be good for digging and I can share them."
Alfred smiled at his sister's generosity. "My spear can loosen the sand."
Becca stepped up and waved her pan around. "This will help too."
Gina with her broken bed warmer walked over to the hill and started digging. The others, who had laughed at her choice, were amazed at how efficient it was. The ice was broken and both teams, though still wary, walked over to Gina and started digging with pots, pan and hands. Poppy's bucket was used to move the sand away so it wouldn't block the entrance to the hole.

It soon became apparent that Titiana's chair had its uses. Aside from providing a good vantage point from which a person could direct the work whilst having a short break, after a while the teams used it the reach the higher points of the tunnel.
Titiana stood on the chair, and used her hand to brush and scrape sand into one of Stephanie’s pots. Occasionally she felt the chair rock as the sand shifted beneath it, but otherwise it remained upright. A few seconds after such a moment some of the sand missed the pot and fell to the ground, showering Poppy who worked to the side of the chair.
“I’m sorry Poppy! I didn’t get you in the eyes did I?†Titiana apologised as the girl looked up.
“No, I’m fine Titiana. Most of it got my hair and shoulders.†She smiled reassuringly and they both returned to work.
All the tools were proving to be very useful and everyone had a specific job to help dig the tunnel; everyone except Inanja. She was standing back behind everyone, looking unsure of what to do. Stephanie noticed Inanja’s hesitant demeanour and stepped back from the group as she wasn’t doing anything overly important at the moment.
“What’s the matter Ina?†she asked. “Why aren’t you getting involved?â€
“Well, what am I supposed to do with a roll of linen?†Inanja siad, waving the material in the air. She had replaced her uncertainty with irritation. “Gina told me it would be useful, but I still haven’t been able to do anything!â€
“If Gina said it would help then I’m sure it will,†Stephanie tried to calm her down. “You just have to be patient.†Without another word, she returned to the group and kept digging.

With a sigh Inanja tucked the roll of linen under her arm and went to join in with the digging until an answer arose.
The two teams had been working together for almost an hour before tempers started to fray. Typically it was two of the men who started shouting. It appeared that Garret had tripped over Alfred’s spear as he dragged his shield along the ground, piled high with sand.
“I’m sorry Garret! Are you alright?†Alfred was apologising profusely. Garret however wasn’t listening to words of reconciliation.
“Watch what you’re doing with that spear! You could have taken my eye out!â€
Titiana hurried over to try and defuse the situation. “Garret, Alfred apologised for what happened. It was an accident.†She gave him a hard look. He returned it with a glare.
“Didn’t feel like an accident,†he muttered before walking away after another hard look from Titiana. He made his way over to where Sahr and Faadri stood. Standing in front of them he asked, slightly more politely than the way he’d been speaking before, “Can we have water?â€
Sahr stared down Garret. "You chose everything you need to accomplish this task."
"I didn't see any water when we were choosing," Garret scrunched his brows, trying best to calm his temper (still being frayed after the altercation with Alfred).
"It's all right, Gar," Becca called out from her spot in the increasingly-larger digging hole. "The sand is cooling as we dig into it. Maybe we're coming up on water, or something."
Happy that 'something' was happening, the two weary teams doubled their efforts digging and before long were rewarded with a puddle of muddy water, growing ever larger at their feet.
Gina stopped work with her bed-warmer for a moment to sniff the water. "I forsee that it is safe to drink."
Darren snorted at this proclamation, but was silenced by a jab in the ribs from Becca.
"Where have they got us digging to? The sea?" Alfred shook his head as he knelt by the futureteller.
Gina sat back, "No, it'd be salty if it was sea water. This is muddy, but fresh. Ina, bring the linen over here? We can use it to filter a lot of the mud out of the water," she said, while motioning for Stephanie to come join her.
Inanja looked somewhere between relieved to be rid of the roll, to miffed at Gina's snippy prediction being, somewhat, correct, that it would come in useful. "Here, help yourself."
The weary diggers took this as their cue to stop work, and watch the filtration. Gina directed Stephanie to scoop up some water while Gina stretched a bolt of the linen over the top of a second pot as a filter. Stephanie then poured her muddy water through it.
"Typical futureteller," Poppy farsaught Rosa. "Finding something domestic to do in a physical task."

As the group sat down to rest and have a drink of the now filtered water, A group of templeguardians crossed the sands carrying covered dishes. The wonderful smell of cooking wafted over the two teams causing more than one mouth to water. Darren stood and looked hungrily over to where the templeguardians set up a small table and places the platters on it.
"Is that for us do you think?" He asked.
"I don't think so." replied Gina.
The others glared at the futureteller.
"I call them as I see them." She said. "But I could be wrong. My talent isn't that strong." She returned to filtering the water.
