I get a "page does not exist" error with that link.
So with no information about it I probably shouldn't comment but I will anyway: the last movie was dumb.
I literally found out about this a few hours ago and when I casually went to get my daily dose of Obernet, there's a thread! :D
I wonder who they'll get to play the Doctor? If the guy who did the last few Harry Potter movies is doing this one, I hope it won't be really dark... I suppose there will be mixed reactions to this, but I for one am interested to see what's going to happen.
Wait, isn't the linked page basically saying "there is no movie"? Why the excitement?
Having said that, I think if there is a movie I'd like to see something about the first Doctor when he first nicked off with the Tardis. Maybe show how Susan came to travel with him. Perhaps some scenes of the Doctor and the Master together at the Academy, though I'm not sure how that could work without using their real names.
With a prequel storyline they could bring in "movie actors" without disrupting the TV show at all.
There is only one clear course of action here;
We must kill David Yates.
'The movie' is supposed to be a completely seperate from the whoniverse, and will contain its own seperate story.
Having said that, no story has been written, no cast have been announced and no financing has been provided. If this never gets made, I shall be happy

I'm hoping that the overwhelmingly negative response from the fandom will nip this in the bud.
Don't [censored] off the fandom. They're armed.
EDIT: I was censored! That's fantastic!

I actually don't mind the idea, I mean, the way I read it, they only said that it won't be new DW compliant, that doesn't mean that it won't be compliant with any classic Who. Maybe the Lungbarrow story arc might finally find it's way to the screen. That I'd be interested to see. Alternatively, maybe they pick up at the same point the new series did and take it in a completely new direction. Maybe there's no time war and Gallifrey still exists.
I just don't see why we should hate a movie on principle. The whoniverse is big enough for not only the TV shows, but also novels, radioplays, trock and who knows how many other things. Why can't it have room for another movie? Sure, the previous movies were awful and certainly film adaptions have a history of failure, but there are good adaptions. For example, I thought that the first Charlie's Angels movie was great and I really really enjoyed HP and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Sure, some things were cut, but I thought they left in enough and changed the right things in order to create a movie which was enjoyable without butchering the novel.
An adaption that shows you can take something in a completely new direction and still have something worth watching is Howl's Moving Castle. That was a great movie adaption for all that it twisted the book till it was barely recognisable.
I just think it helps to keep an open mind. If you go in expecting to be disappointed, you probably will be. If you just want to see how someone new takes it in a different direction, theres a chance you may find something not only new, but also interesting and worthwhile. Davies and Moffat are far from perfect and you never know, once Yates decides on his cannon he may actually stick to it. Wouldn't that be a refreshing change?
I hate as many things on principle as possible as a matter of principle. :P
I would love to see the Lungbarrow arc revisted. That would be AMAZING.
But I'm still sceptical about a movie because of the show's history. The show has so much history that trying to make a film that doesn't follow the timeline and universe of the television series is a bad idea. There's so much complexity and depth to the show that can't be fit into and hour and a half without assuming that the audience has a base knowledge of the show. And the majority of people who watch the show are not going to see the film because it's not going to measure up to the show.
The main issue for me is that I can reconcile everything in Doctor Who to Doctor Who. IT ALL FITS TOGETHER and there is no wavering continuity issue. But if someone unrelated to the Whoverse Pantheon of Gods (*) makes a film about Doctor Who that is not connected to the continuity of the show I will not be able to reconcile the two in any way.
N.B. I am also a purist, when it suits me.
(*vote that we refer to the Doctor Who production and writing team as this from now on? Please? It would include Steven Moffat, Murray Gold, Chris Chibnall, Mark Gatiss etc.)

Oh for the days when Doctor Who made sense in my head. I know of a few things that are impossible to reconcile because they involve logical contradictions, even if you assume that time can be rewritten and/or multiple dimensions of time. I think I'll refrain from mentioning them though because I know I was a lot happier before I found them :P And then there are other things that are just plain wrong. For example, the 'impossible planet' was 100% possible (in reference to it's orbit, not it's story line XD ).
But yes, accepting your above points ('cos I kind of have to since I'm refusing to present my evidence :P ), there are still two incredibly bad Doctor Who movies already in existence. How exactly would a third one make anything worse?
Or even: Third time's the charm? If you're into superstition and all that.
Movement to refer to the Doctor Who production and writing team as the "Whoverse Pantheon of Gods" is seconded.
From Steven Moffat's Tweet:
To clarify: any Doctor Who movie would be made by the BBC team, star the current TV Doctor and certainly NOT be a Hollywood reboot.
