Just some of my thoughts, ramblings and musings that may or may not be interesting... but here goes. Out of everyone’s name, Dameon’s always seemed to me, to be the most elusive and interesting – but maybe that’s because I love him and read too much into things... hmm... But anyway...

The name definition:Here’s a list of all the different definitions I found. Note that the names have slightly different spellings such as Damien, Damian, Damon, Daman etc but in most cases they are essentially the same:
Damian is “derived from Greek δαμαω (damao) meaning "to tame" (
from source), and “... the Greek root is also close to the word for "spirit" (
source).
Damien is defined as “sweet and harmless†and in stark contrast can also mean “... divine power and fate!†(
source).
In another site, Damien was defined as “... a true friend†(
source).
Perhaps, more cryptically – well I found this strange – some definitions described Damien as being “[d]erived from the element 'daman' (
source) “meaning "to tame, to subdue" and euphemistically "to kill" (
source).
I also can’t help but think of the similarity to the word ‘daemon’: “Protecting spirits, Latin Genii, analogous to the guardian angels invoked by the Church of Rome. The belief in such spirits existed both in Greece and at Rome†(
source) – which is a completely different entity entirely to demons.
This brings to mind Dameon’s ‘Sadorian- given’ title asura – which in its Buddhist/Hinduism faith, ties in neatly to the demi-god or semi-blessed being or even guardian spirit image. (Outlined in the ‘
Asura’ thread by larana).
What could this say about his personality?Taming/ to tame: This could refer to his incredible empath abilities to calm, soothe and influence the emotions of people etc).
Spirit: I’m not sure – that’s a curious part but could possibly relate to a theory that has already been re-hashed - that it was Dameon’s ‘spirit-call’ that pulled her back in Ashling p500).
Sweet and harmless: This is rather obvious. There are so many quotes of Dameon being sweet in some way; his smile, his overall personality etc.
A true friend: Again – speaks for itself.
Divine power and fate: hmmm... interesting – something to do with his destiny, maybe his title as ‘asura’?
Subdue? Euphemism to kill? Interesting – because a synonym for ‘kill’ is also ‘destroy.’ But maybe this definition goes a little too far...
What could this say about his role/ destiny? These definitions bring to mind someone who is honourable and sweet, yet powerful; someone with a great destiny. So someone who’s not necessarily the Destroyer – although this would be an interesting twist! – but someone who is like a spirit guide and helper. The title asura implies a destiny of some kind whether for good or bad, I’m not sure.
I’ve always thought that Dameon would play some sort of sacrificial/martyr type role. There are a number of famous Saints and martyrs in history with the same name:
The Greek legend of Damon and Pythias (
source), Saint Damian, who “was martyred with his twin brother Cosmo in Syria early in the 4th century (
source), Peter Damian (another Saint), and the Belgian priest Father Damien – “honored as the man who gave his life helping the lepers of Molokai in Hawaii.â€
Dameon strikes me as the martyr type: forever doomed to love the woman he can’t have. So maybe he’ll die for Elspeth or for a cause bigger than the both of them!
Sorry – this is a bit long – I can’t believe I wrote so much! But then again – I’m on holidays... I don’t even need to think of Uni until at least another week. These are only my speculations, but I think Dameon’s name implies he has a part yet to play – but whether for good or evil, I don’t know... His name could imply a range of things: A sacrificial figure, a comforter/ spirit-guide figure, a ‘semi-blessed being’ (asura), someone with a powerful destiny of sorts or the Destroyer. I’m not sure...
