1. Sleepover
“Sammy!†My friend Rachel called from the door.
I ran from my room and out to meet her. “Where is everyone?†I asked, wondering about my three other best friends.
Rachel turned her head down the street with her long, straight, orange-red hair falling over her shoulder as she did. I followed her gaze and sure enough; on the right side of the street was Brigette and Sky, and to the left of the street was Emily. They were walking over meeting halfway, which was my house. Rachel lived on the left side of me, followed by Emily, and Brigette followed by Sky lived on the right.
“Sammy, Rachel!†Emily called.
“Hey!†We both yelled in unison.
The three of them ran over to greet us. Even though we hadn’t seen each other all morning, it had still felt like forever. The five of us had been best friends ever since we were born – literally. Our parents had also been best friends since they moved here, that’s why we all live next door to each other. We were even born in the same hospital, our birthdays only few days apart. We knew each other’s insides and outs. We spent most of our time at each other’s houses.
“Got everything?†I asked, even though that they didn’t really need anything since our only room upstairs – not including the upstairs bathroom – had been turned into our ‘HQ’.
They nodded and we ran upstairs. We had everything there; we had a TV, a computer, a couch, and chairs, along with permanent mattresses. I had asked mum if we could put beds there and if I could move up there, but she said maybe.
Mum poked her head upstairs, “I see that you girls have arrived. I’m going over to Julie’s house for the night, the boys have gone out. Amelia, Jessica, Lisa, Julie and I are going to have a girl’s night, and Jon, Frank, Ross, and Freddy are going over to Michaels house for a boys night out.†Mum told me. Freddy and Megan were my parents, Jon and Lisa were Sky’s, Julie and Frank were Brigette’s, Amelia and Michael were Emily’s, Jessica and Ross were Rachel’s. I was lucky, I was the only, only child out of the five of us. Brigette was the middle child – Amy was the oldest and Ashley was the youngest; Sky was the youngest of her brothers Seth and Jake; Emily was the eldest of Maybelle; and Rachel was younger than Reuben, but older than Francine.
“Bye Mum,†We all called out. We were all practically family so we called each of our friend’s parents Mum and Dad as well as our own.
When the parents had left for the night we sat there, “What should we do?†I asked.
Rachel’s eyes lit up, “Let’s re-arrange the room and move Sammy in!†She cried.
“Yes!†Emily squeaked.
They had started plotting when I cleared my throat, “Hey guys, as much as I want to…what about my parents?â€
“You asked them and they said maybe, didn’t they?†Rachel asked. I nodded. “Please?â€
I looked into Rachel’s brown eyes. “Oh fine.†I giggled and got up.
We moved the beanbags and I ran downstairs. We started moving everything and it took a lot of work, but the hardest part was definitely moving the actual bed frame up the staircase. We took lots of photos to add to our room, and after about 5-6 hours we were finally done. It was dark outside now, and we all collapsed. I stared around the room…it was so different, “Pizza?†I suggested, which they quickly agreed to.
The rest of the night went by quickly…too quickly. We were so exhausted from moving things that we ended up falling asleep.
One of them dragged me; I screamed out my friends names while they screamed too. I held back my tears and the man holding me whispered, “It’s the only way, sorry.†Then chained me to the ground, my feet and my hands, and walked away. I looked for my friends, and they were chained too. I was scared and confused by what the man had said to me.
It looked as though we are standing in a circle, but then I saw the men behind us and realized that we may be standing in a circle, until it occurred to me that we were actually in the circle.
They started chanting something, but I couldn’t understand them.
They stopped, and said in English, “It is time for the chosen ones to be awakened.â€
What chosen ones? I was about to ask when they looked up into the sky. We followed their gazes. Bright lights, maybe not even lights, were hurdling towards us, and we could not run. I saw a fiery red, a glowing gold, a liquid-ish blue; and an-almost-invisible silver, but there was a fifth. I couldn’t figure out what colour it was until I realize it was all four.
The biggest one, the fifth one, hurdled towards me, I screamed …
My eyes flew open and I sat up. I found myself not in bed…I must have rolled out. I felt my wrists as if I still had the chains on me. It had felt so real…it had felt like I was really there, like it really happened. I looked at the clock. It was 5 in the morning, and I didn’t really want to go back to sleep after that, so I wandered downstairs. I stared at the calendar in the kitchen. It had five days highlighted; August 18th Emily’s birthday, August 19th Rachel’s birthday, August 20th Sammy’s birthday, August 21st Brigette’s birthday, and August 22nd Sky’s birthday. We were all turning 18 this year but you wouldn’t know it because we didn’t act like 17 year olds most of the time, we acted like we were children a lot. I smiled, only two days until Emily’s birthday. Good thing I had already gotten my friends their presents which were now hidden away in the shed where – hopefully – my friends wouldn’t find them.
I looked out the window in the lounge room…I had forgotten to shut the curtains. It wasn’t completely black anymore, it was a little lighter. Then I saw a man’s face looking through the window staring straight at me. As soon as I looked at him though, he ran off. I don’t know why, but it scared me and before I could stop myself, I screamed.
Rachel ran down, followed by the others, “What’s wrong?†Rachel asked.
I pointed to the window, unable to find the right words, “…man…window…†I said, trailing off.
“There was a man outside the window?†Sky asked.
I had managed to calm down a bit, and replied, “Yeah, I looked out the window and there was a man staring at me, but he ran off.â€
“What the Hell?†Emily yelled.
“I agree.†I said, staring out the window. I took my focus away from the window and onto my friends, “It just tops off a great night. First I have a nightmare, then this.â€
“Nightmare?†Brigette asked, “I had one too.â€
“Same here,†Rachel said.
“Me too,†Emily said, confused.
“Same…†Sky said, trailing off.
“Okay, don’t you think it’s just a bit weird that we all had nightmares?†Emily asked.
“It’s probably just a coincidence.†I told them…and myself.
That weekend was over before we knew it. We had gotten dressed and decided to walk to the park which was opposite our houses. It was a pretty big area, but that didn’t matter.
I sat on the bottom of the slide while the others found places to sit too. It was quiet for awhile and then Sky broke the silence, “We can’t tell our parents.â€
We knew what she was talking about, and for some reason, I felt the same way.
“They will call the police,†Brigette continued.
“Isn’t that a good thing?†Emily asked.
“Usually, yes … but for some reason …†Rachel trailed off.
“We don’t want to,†I finished.
“Samantha!†Mum called from inside the house.
“I think she found our room…†I muttered, “Coming!†I called.
The girls got up and followed and even though they shouldn’t, I knew they would. We were sisters and we would always get in trouble together.
“Yes Mum?†We asked in unison.
“Your room?†She demanded.
“Well… you weren’t there…and we were bored…â€I trailed off, and then added, “I didn’t think you would mind!â€
“Honey, I don’t, I just wish you had told me…â€
“Next time,†I assured her.
The ground was full of dirt, so was the walls and roof. I realized I was underground. “Where are we?†I asked, even though I knew.
“We are underground.â€
I turned around, but saw no one.
The voice chuckled, “You can see me, only if I wish you to.â€
“Who are you?†I demanded.
“You tell me.â€
I started running, but tripped, the voice was getting closer, but still echoed.
“You cannot run from me, nor can you hide. I am everywhere.â€
“Sammy!†Mum shouted.
I woke with a start, feeling jumpy and tired, “What?†I ask.
“Hurry up, the bus will be here in 20 minutes!â€
I groaned and got out of bed.
That dream had been just like last night’s. It was as if I was really in the dream. It’s only a dream. I told myself.
I walked out of the house and saw my best friends on the street, “Hey guys!†I called with as much energy I had.
“Hey,†Rachel called, but it wasn’t right.
When I caught up to my friends their eyes weren’t as bright as usual, “What’s up?†I asked, even though I could tell they hadn’t slept well.
“Couldn’t sleep,†They muttered.
“Neither,†I turned to Emily handing her, her present, “Happy Birthday!†I announced, with all of the energy I had. The others joined in.

I was going through it going, "Aargh!" But then I thought, "Haha, I will leave the editing to Aunty Helen," *grins mischeviously*
