Okay, major clue: the book is being adapted to film.
Ah! I haven't read it but I did see a trailer recently for a movie adaptation of Gayle Forman's 'If I stay' that seems like it might be a fit?

Correct Lauren! The book is well worth a read, and I'm optimistic from the trailers I've seen that the adaptation is well done.

This is the second book in a trilogy by a female author. The third book is due out later this year (November). Each book is from the perspective of a different girl.

Ok this is Book Guessimation I would like the name of the book and the author :P
And then the rainforest opened out and they found themselves at the edge of a clearing. The helicopter had dropped them on high ground, on a plateau, and suddenly a whole panorama opened up in front of them. It was a sight none of them would ever forget.
There was a vast monstrous hole in the ground. It was as if an entire mountain had been scooped out and this was the empty space that had been left. In fact, this was exactly what had happened. The hole was man-made.

I'll give another (hopefully more recognizable) scene:
They were commanded by the wretches who had been 'adjusted', mutilated to make them more frightening and less human. Among them were the politicians and businessmen who had attended the __ conference in New York. They were unrecognizable now. Some of them had had their arms or hands sawn off and replaced with metal rods and spikes. Some had been put into iron masks, which completely enclosed their heads and which can never be removed.
Certainly sounds like a very interesting story, but perhaps another clue, unless anyone recognises it?
The book is called Oblivion and is by Anthony Horowitz.
