I can't believe I've only just heard of this! Stupid 'real life' getting in the way of Ober.net! *shakes fist* Of course I'd love to submit, but I can also review and edit as well. I have some article/thesis editing experience, and my own work has been edited quite a lot for publication, so I understand the process of it. This is so exciting!
Hi guys!! This looks awesome, can't wait to help out. I'm not very good at editing (i just seem to gush compliments and forget to critique.) but i'd love to write something(s?) for this. I already have a poem that needs editing written up, but i don't know where/how/when to submit? or even if it fits the theme well enough... idk, anyways, i also have a short story spinning round my head i'd like to write out that WILL fit the theme. So ya, just tell me what to do! :)
Thanks, guys.
We don't have the infrastructure in place for critiques yet or an editing committee, but just start writing your work, and if you finish it early, that's awesome! Post letting us know, and we'll work out a secure place for you to give us a link to it (or email it to us so we can upload for you).
thanks AF for the info on poetry editing. I had never really thought about it before...
Hmmm...since some people feel more comfortable with having private(?) feedback, should we open another thread where people can request/volunteer to give feedback on a specific piece and then message each other? That way people can commit to helping out with one work at a time, so there's less pressure :)
I don't know how closed threads work though, so an explanation would be good (-_-;)
Of course, it's early in production so this idea is still up in the air!
That's one option, Axe. Another way of doing things, which we've been using in Prodders for a little while, is just to have a private forum (which has now been set up by Min; if anyone has been left of, let us know and we'll get you added), in which we create our own writing threads then post links to work and let everyone jump in and make comments. The benefit of that is that editors and the writer can then have discussions with each other about proposed changes; if everyone comments privately, you end up with duplicated and possibly contradictory comments.
At this stage I do not want to run private edits for the project. While we can certainly undertake them, is ultimately not going to be useful for the anthology--if you have other projects you'd like to send to editors privately to see if they would be interested in taking a look for you, then fine. Some of us certainly already do that.
This is, however, a project that is going to be published, so one has to be able to be comfortable with a large number of people reading their work. The editing process is a part of that, and we're focusing on not just putting together an anthology here, but teaching people about writing and editing and how such works are put together from start to finish. You're going to get the most from this project by being interactive. A closed forum will keep your writing safe from the greater public at large, but if you are uncomfortable sharing you writing with other submitters, you may want to consider what you are trying to gain from partaking?
Of course, you will be able to submit a final work to the anthology without having partaken in any of the critique sessions that will be run throughout the year and so your writing will only then be seen by the final editing committee before publication (if chosen), but again, I believe one will gain the most by interacting in the sessions and workshops,
On a side note, contradictory comments are important. Editors are ultimately just like writers. How one editor edits will be different to how another does, and while they are using the same foundations, just like writers, the end results are going to be different depending on their own opinions and biases and so on. It doesn't make either editor wrong or right, but part of the writers job is negotiating just these contradictions and working out what works best for them and their story. It's all a part of the process.
I see :) Thanks for explaining! (I meant private forum, not closed thread - see how well my brain works at times hahaha) My main concern was that if the work was already available to anybody visiting the site through the forums, it would take away from actually buying the published ebook.
I agree - having public (to an extent) edits would be very beneficial to all involved!
Well the critique sessions will workshop what we call snippets. Not the entire story. Only the final editors will see the entire story before publication unless people want to share their entire story beforehand--but that's up to the writer.

This is really starting to feel real now. I'm just a little awed by what we are going to do.
Well, I for one am excited. Let's hope I can actually finish a writing project seeing as I never have finished any of my work save for inconsequential things

this is certainly incentive to get something finished. Might have to try that myself.
You WILL finish, WK. [act]taps cattle prod[/act] It is known.
*jumps in*
I'll enter something, probably poetry although maybe I'll manage a short story. I'm also happy to help read through things and give feedback, although not as an official editor.
Quick question: is there a limit on the number of works each writer can submit? (And how would that work for pieces with multiple authors?)
Fairly sure there is no limit, though obviously submitting 25 stories is probably a tad too much :P
I think for now, let's just get submissions. If Shonk feels people are producing too much, I'm sure she'll step in and tell you politely to go away :).
It's Shonk, can you remember a time when she turned away stories? :P
If we get that many submissions that we like... save em for Volume 2 lol.
More words! *waves cattle prod*
Random thought, and prob of no help, but can we have a cattle prod gif for participation? pretty pls? lol
Why have we not already got this in the Prodders forum?? Though I'm willing to bet that Darga or Shonk have an image of a cattle prod

We've had cattleprods in the past--when they first appeared on the site during the swine flu they were everywhere.
Editing committee applications are now open though, and there are new discussion threads to get into since it's Sep 1st. EVERYTHING HAS STARTED. GO GO GO
Oh wow this sounds like so much fun! *bounces around in chair*
Been offline for a few weeks and stuff happens! Off to write something!
