here is some more. This part isn't quite finished so bear with me.
Blind Running
They spent the rest of the day going to classes. Lunch was much the same as recess, with them being extra loud. Seb started to relax into the new school. He got a lift home with Kaleb, in the only free seat they had, and spent the afternoon with Kaleb, Keira, Lexi and Jacob, doing homework, playing with the little kids and others things of the sort. Everyone headed home around tea time, and Seb was the last to leave. Keira offered to walk him home, in which they both laughed to. She walked over to the fence, and they talked about things that people had done during school. About the silly things Jacob had done, and the way Lexi shoot him down all the time. They stood there, talking and laughing for a long time before both their parents called them in.
“See you at school tomorrow?†Keira asked
“Sure will†Seb replied. They both parted and as they walked off, Seb smiled to himself. When he got to the house, his mother was standing on the front porch
“What are you smiling about Seb?†She asked him in a normal voice, not the screech that Keira had heard a few times.
Seb kissed his mother on the cheek “It’s going to be a good year mum†and he walked inside. His mother followed him, her own smile now adorning her face.
This same routine went on for weeks. As the day went by, Keira and Seb became closer friends. Seb joined the basketball team, though he wasn’t one of the best players, and he became best friends with Jacob and Kaleb. When Seb’s car arrived, he started taking her to school, and taking her home, though she still went with Kaleb sometimes. The school musical started, and it was during this first week of practicing that Seb found out how good Keira really was at singing. She had written this years play, called ‘Night of your life’ and had also been picked as the star of it. She was now looking for a lead male. Seb walked into one of the auditions, Keira was sitting there, head in hands, shaking her head, as one of the males audition.
“Not good aren’t they?†Seb asked as he pulled up a chair.
“There just no one who can keep up with me. Or who can do the dances. You’d think in a school this big you would be able to find at least one person who would be able to dance and sing!†She looked up at the boy, who was now on the floor, finished. “If you think you’ve got the position you can go jump off the top of the school building. Go, go get out of hereâ€
“Wow, I didn’t know you had a dark side†Seb said with a crooked smile.
“I don't. But people keep coming in here with no idea what they are doing yet they still turn up to waste my time!†Keira’s voice slowly rose in pitch. Seb stood up. He extended his hand to her.
“Come on. Show me what their meant to doâ€
Keira looked at him, a crooked smile on her face, before taking Seb’s hand and letting him lead her up to the stage. She walked over to the c.d player, and put on the song she was trying to teach to the males. She walked back over to where Seb was waiting.
“Your sure you want to do this?â€
“I just want to see if it’s as hard as you are making it out to be†Seb said, a crooked smile of his own.
“It’s not hard, it’s just that no one here can do the danceâ€
“Well, I want to learn it. Lets have a goâ€
“Alright then, first of all you start with a simple two step, just like in a waltz dance. Then you go three step, grab the hand of the girl and twirlllllllll. . .â€
Seb did as she was saying, doing all the right steps when he was meant to. As they got more into the dance, Keira started singing the lyrics.
“Don’t stop believing, don't stop knowing
What is happening? What is going on?
I cant believe that this is real,
I cant believe that this is happening
Is this everything I have always been dreaming of,
I’m fallingâ€
Seb joined in for the last line, as they both came together, facing each other.
“Falling for youâ€
They looked at each other for a few seconds, before Seb pulled Keira into a kiss. They held it for a few seconds before pulling away from each other.
“Um. . . Err. . . um sorry Keira. I didn’t. . . I mean†Seb stammered. Keira stood there, hand pressed to her mouth. She couldn’t say a word. She didn’t want to incase it screwed the moment up. She had been wanting this to happen for weeks, but hadn’t had the nerve to do anything about it. Seb turned away from her now, and walked off. Keira was too struck to do anything. She heard the door open, and snapped out of it.
“SEB! WAIT!†she called as she ran towards the door.
“I thought. . . I mean I thought†he stammered again as she caught up to him. He opened his mouth to say something else, and she kissed him again. He smiled as he kissed her, then she pulled away and he looked at her, wondering what was wrong.
“What’s wrong Keira. Am I doing something wrong?†He asked her, unable to keep the uncertainty out of his voice.
“No, No. Everything is perfect now. I have wanted this for weeks Seb. But I didn’t know how to go about it†She reached out, wanting him to take hold of her hand. He grabbed it and they walked out. School had finished hours ago, and Kaleb had gone home because Seb had sent him a message saying he would bring Keira home. They were alone in the car park. They got into the car, and Seb drove them home. Keira gave him one more kiss goodnight before heading inside to her family. She couldn’t get the smile off her face. Kaleb came up to her as she came in the door, knowing she would trip over the umbrella stand which had been moved there after the rain had started earlier today.
“You alright Ke Ke? Did you find someone to do the part?†He asked, hoping that they had, for Keira’s sake.
“I sure did Kaleb. I found the perfect guy!†she whispered in a high, dreamy voice. Kaleb stared at her, and as she went to sit down, he saw the look in her eyes. He shook his head at her, and went to sit next to her. He put his arm around her, as he had when they were younger and she had been bullied by his friends, and whispered in her ear
“I’m glad little sis. It’s about time you didâ€
Keira turned her face up towards him and flashed him a big smile. She had found her perfect guy, a guy who would never think her too beautiful or ugly, to mean or nice, or who would baby her because she was blind. She had found a guy by herself, without any of her families help. She coughed, and kept on coughing. Kaleb jumped up and went to the kitchen, got her a glass of water and her pills, before bringing it all back to her. She took them in between coughs, and they slowed down. As she lay there later on that night, unable to sleep because of her lung infection, she thought about how she would tell Seb about her disease, and whether it would ever leave her system.
Across from the house, in the old man’s mansion, Seb was sitting with his parents at the dinner table, looking out the window which faced Keira’s house.
“Whats your problem tonight son? You have hardly talked at all†Seb’s father asked.
“Nothing dad. I just had a good day†Seb looked at both his parents then, and saw that they had a worried look on their faces. He let out a sigh. “Look, There good people Mother, Father, Keira will be good for me. You don't have to worry about me turning out like Jack. I am going to be a good person Mother. Don’t look so frightened. Keira is a good person†He told his parents. He did not want them worrying about him going off the deep end as his brother had, and he didn’t want them worrying. He looked down and ate a mouthful, before looking up again at his parents. They still had a worried look on their face.
“What? What is it?†He asked now, a hint of worry in his voice.
“It’s about your brother Seb Darling, he needs our help. He’s coming home†Seb stared at his mother and father. He couldn’t believe this! After all Jack had down to them they were going to let him come back and live with them? He didn’t want Jack to come back. Last time Seb spent time with Jack, he had nearly ended up in jail.
“How long?â€
“Not for another few months darling. We said he couldn’t come till he could afford it himself, and he wanted to give you enough time to settle inâ€
“What, before he came and ruined my life again? You know what he did last time Mum. I just got going with Keira. I cant tell her about Jack. I was going to have her over so we could practice on the big piano, but I guess I cant nowâ€
“Yes of course you can sweetie. Jack wont be coming till after your performance, so you have plenty of time before you have to think about anything to do with Jack, or explaining to Keira, or anything. Don’t worry about it till we tell you to alright sweetie. Until the time in which Jack is on his way, you don't have to worry about himâ€
Seb got up from his chair. “Fine. But you are to give me plenty of warning alright? I don't want him turning up and I don't know about itâ€
“Of course hun. Know, run along to bed, you have a big day tomorrowâ€
“Big day? Why?â€
“Because son, the second day is always the hardest. Now don't you worry about Jack until we tell you toâ€
“And have a good sleep honey!â€
And so Seb stalked off to bed. He couldn’t believe that his brother would do this to him! Why would he come back and ruin it for his family again? Seb resolved not to tell Keira until closer to the date. They had a lot to do for the show in a couple of weeks and Seb didn’t want to stuff that up for Keira. He finally went to sleep, but tossed and turned all night with bad dreams of what his brother might make him do when he came to town. Seb did not like what his dreams came up with at all.
Keira and Seb became the talk of the school for the next couple of months, not only were they dating each other, they were also the leads in the school production. Students had already brought the tickets to see the show, and Seb’s parents, as well as Keira’s whole family had brought tickets to nearly every show. The opening night was fantastic, and the whole week of performing nothing went wrong. The after party was great, and Keira and Seb hardly left each others side all night. Kaleb drove them all home afterwards, and it was an altogether great week. Seb really enjoyed himself and he knew Keira loved having someone who could actually do all the dances and hit all the notes, which only made Seb happier. They became closer with every passing day, and with every passing day Keira also got sicker. She hid it from Seb as best she could, much to Kaleb’s disgust, but she still got sicker.
“You need to tell him sis†Kaleb warned her one night. “What if something really happ. . .†Keira’s eyes rolled up into her head, and she collapsed. Kaleb raced over to her, and shook her “Keira! KERIA!!!! MUM! MUM COME QUICK! SOMEONE CALL AN AMBLUENCE!†Something had finally happened, as Kaleb had warned Keira for weeks. An ambulance was called, and Keira was rushed off to hospital, her family following behind, including the little baby. Kaleb kept vigile through the night next to her bed, as test after test was run and doctors and nurses came in and out. The next morning his phone vibrated in his hand. Looking to see who would be texting, he saw it was from Seb, asking where Keira was, they were going to be late for school. Kaleb stood up to call him, but Keira placed a weak hand on his arm
“Please†she breathed out, hardly able to talk “please don't tell himâ€
Kaleb stared at his twin sister, and realizing she was being serious, he nodded. He sent back a simple message ‘something wrong with mum. Neither at school today. Talk later’ He turned back to Keira, who had fallen back asleep, but she had a smile on her face, and that’s all Kaleb cared about.
At school that day, Seb was distracted. That morning he had been told by his parents that his brother would be coming in a week. He goes out this morning to tell his girlfriend about it all, and she was with her sick mother. He wasn’t mad at Keira, he just wished she trusted him enough to tell him. Then he thought about himself keeping the fact that Jack was coming back away from Keira and realized that he himself didn’t trust Keira. Or he didn’t trust himself. He didn't want to turn into the person he was around Jack, for Keira’s sake. He stared at his phone all day. When it was lunch time, he sat with Jacob, Lexi and all the others, but he never said a word. When he got home, he went straight over to Keira’s house, knocked on the door. No one was home. He went back home, only to see him mother on the front porch.
“You. . . You got a message from Kaleb darling. It’s about Keira†He stared at her mother, unable to make any of his body work. Finally he was able to ask
“What about her?†His Mother came up and hugged him, before telling him that he should get in the car, they were going to the hospital.
They raced over to the hospital, when they got there, all the little kids had gone off with Charlie’s wife, who had come up with Charlie and their son when Kaleb had told them about Keira. The older ones had left just before Seb had arrived, it all being to much for them to handle. The only ones left were Charlie, Kaleb, and their mother, Amanda and father, Robert. Seb came in, to see Charlie sitting with his head in his hands, and Mr and Mrs. Dixon standing at the window, Mrs. Dixon in the circle of her husbands arms. Seb came crashing in, and Charlie got up to talk to him.
“What’s happening?†Seb demanded
“It’s Keira Seb†Kaleb said, he was slumped against the wall. “She’s real sickâ€
“Why didn’t you tell me this morning? Why did you lie to me?†Seb was starring at Kaleb now. He was distressed, he had no idea what was going on with his girlfriend, and all everyone would tell him was that she was sick “Will someone please tell me whats going on?â€
Mrs. Dixon walked up to him. She put her arm around him and dragged him over to where Charlie and Kaleb were sitting “She has had a lung condition for months now Seb, since before she met you. We all thought it was on the mend, but then it came back. She had a turn last night, one. . . One of her lungs collapsed†Mrs. Dixon stood up then and turned away form Seb, into her husbands arms once again. Charlie, a doctor himself, took over the telling “You see Seb, all the mucus build up in her lungs was making it more and more difficult for her to breath, until she had no air anymore to hold the lung up. So it collapsed. We’re sorry we didn’t tell you earlier, but she didn’t want us to tell you. I think she didn’t want you worryingâ€
“Of course I would worry, is she going to be alright?â€
“We’re not sure. She crashed just before, because not enough oxygen is getting to her brain. She is in the theater right now. They are trying to re-inflate her lung so that she has some oxygen going to her brain. Then she will have an operation to try and clear out the other lung. Hopefully by the time they are finished with all the operations, she will be able to live normally again, without any medication or anythingâ€
“She has to be ok†He turned to stare at his own mother and father, who were standing looking at him. “She just has to be†he broke down then, into tears. He didn’t want anything to happen to her. He wouldn’t let anything happen to her. He looked at his father who nodded. His father was the residence director here, after being chief of medicine at his old job. He whispered to his wife, before going off to find the surgical staff. See if he could find anything out about how Keira was going. Charlie and Kaleb watched him leave, before turning to Seb with questioning eyes. Seb turned to explain.
“He’s the residence director. He should be able to find out about how Keira is going†He said, a wishful look on his face. His mother came and sat next to him. Patting his hand to comfort him “She’s going to be alright sonâ€
They waited there for hours. Seb’s father came back several times, saying that he wasn’t able to find anything out unless he scrubed in and stayed there, which wouldn’t be very much help to them anyway. In the end he just stayed with them. 4 hours later, A doctor came through the waiting room doors.
“Mr. and Mrs. Dixon?â€
“Yes! Oh please, how is Keira?†Mrs. Dixon pleaded
“She’s stable for now. We will monitor her over the next couple of days. We were able to re-inflate the lung, and clean out the other one, but we may need to keep her in for a couple of weeks so that we can operate to clean out the other lung. Before any of that though she needs to recover from these operations, and this could take timeâ€
Mr. and Mrs. Dixon just nodded, unable to produce words. It was Seb’s father, Mr. Wilson, who answered for them.
“Thank you Doctor Tudor. We Appreiate all you’ve doneâ€
“Are we able to visit her?†Seb asked
“Yes, but family onlyâ€
Seb was about to say something when Mr. and Mrs. Dixon said it for him
“It’s alright Doctor†Mrs. Dixon started “He is family†she flashed Seb a smile. “Why don't you go in dear? We need to find out how Fran is going with all the kids. Charlie, Kaleb? Could you go get us some coffee and food? I need some sustenance†she smiled at her two sons, who nodded understandably. Seb looked around at his own parents, who gave him a little ‘go’ look and wave. He took a deep breath, and followed the doctor to Keira’s room.
Keira was hooked up to many different machines. She was on her back, and she looked paler then ever before. He almost ran to her when he saw her, and dropped beside her, grabbing her hand and holding it to his face.
“you should of told me†he whispered to her sleeping form. “I love you Keira. I care about you. You should of told me what was happening. I would have been able to help. I would have been able to. . . To. . .†he couldn’t think of anything else to say. He pulled her hand into his face, and started to cry into.
“You have to be alright Keira. I cant lose you†He stayed there for days, refusing to leave her until she woke up. His and her parents came in and out. Charlie and Kaleb stayed at the hospital most of the time. Some of the older kids came in to see her as well. He stayed like that for two days, on the third day, he was talking to her, reminding her of the fun times they had had, about the musical that had been the best yet coming from the school.
“I love you Keira, I cant lose you†He had her hand pulled into his face again. No tears came this time, he was too exhausted. Then suddenly, He felt her move and heard her moan. He looked up at her, to see her looking at him, eyes half closed, a weak smile on her face.
“I didn’t know you cared so much†she whispered. He smiled, and started laughing.
“Of course I care†he bent over and kissed her on the forehead. “I love you Keira, and I will always care about youâ€
She smiled, and grabbed his hand which was caressing her face. She sighed, and smiled
“I love you too. I’m sorry I couldn’t tell youâ€
“It’s ok, it’s ok†he crooned. “I’m just glad your alrightâ€
