Is anyone going OUT of costume? As in, formal outfit but not an Obernewtyn themed outfit? I'm coming from Brisbane for the weekend and as it will most likely be hot in Melbourne am thinking of a dress but with a fancier mask?
From the FAQ section of the event page:
Note: There is a Masked Ball in The Red Queen, where all of the cultures’ outfits are described in great detail, so if in doubt, wait until you have read The Red Queen before deciding upon your outfit!
Very exciting!
Anyone thought about specific Obernewtyn characters? Any suggestions for Rushton or Ariel?
Also you mentioned Min about male attendees, how many do you reckon we'll get?

There'll be plenty - granted the majority are female but there's still a bunch of Obernet guys, plus our partners, plus Isobelle has a bunch of guests - other authors and friends/family - basically, you won't be on your own :)
Hello! I've been trying to figure out what to make for this... I was thinking of adapting some clothing I already have (as really I'd probably wear it after as well) ...but I might be the lightest colored twentyfamily gypsy around. Haha.
Otherwise I can make something landfolkish.

I'm lily white but I'm still going gypsy.
Flights and accommodation now booked :) Now to find a way to convince my mother-in-law to lend me her fancy Indian outfit. I'll find a photo to see if you guys think it will be suitable to come as a Sadorian.
I have a suggestion for those people that can't afford/ don't want to dress in full costume for the ball but still want to be kind of involved ( namely thinking about partners here). You could consider going as someone from Oldhaven. Remember when Elspeth first arrived she was shocked that everyone was wearing the same weird clothes that had obviously been left from the before time but when she described them the clothes were white t-shirts, denim jeans and boots. I think that would look great with a plain black mask and be a costume most people would be able to use their own clothes for. It still fit with the dress code to given it's 'tidy'. I myself am going as a redlander, given they say roman inspired my mind is going straight to mostly white dresses and given I'm so pale I'm waiting for the description in the book to see if I can wear something colourful instead. I have red hair so am also waiting to see what dragon is wearing to see if that's a possibility. I can't wait for the ball!!! I am so excited!!
If you're thinking of dressing as Dragon, there's also the option of a relatively simple light blue dress inspired by the underskirt Elspeth gives her not long after they find her...
I have no idea what to wear, I might go for white faced lord but I haven't got anything I need for the outfit and I'm on a limited budget. Worst comes to worst I can just go smart casual, but I'd definitely prefer to go in a costume.
If it was red like the ref pic you posted I think it'd definitely be suitable. The "default" costume option for women is any red dress with a veil/mask (as the Red land slave women). That kind of dress would work really well for it.
That dress in red would totally work!

People who maybe having difficulty with things like glasses as far as masks, maybe think about the kinds of thing used in steampunk eras, or oriental dress, like fans and gas masks, goggles and other assorted items, surely this would be acceptable and not impede your sight? Just a thought. Good luck with your costumes, have fun and please take lots of pics of all your amazing costumes
At the moment i'm thinking my floaty pants from thailand and I have ordered an indian dress from ebay. it's not here yet so i don't know if it will work

Now that it's definite that I'm able to come (huzzah!), I have actually had to seriously think about a costume! I had previously given this no thought. I'm thinking I'll go as a warrior woman of the white faced lords because the costume sounds simple and comfortable and I can make it myself if I can't find anything that'll work for it, but that'll see me wearing pants and it sounds like most people are going dresses. Do you think pants would be okay? CrystalPebble, it sounds like you'll be in pants!
So I've finally decided on a knee length shift dress and sandals for my Redlander attire. I've been looking for temporary tribal tattoos but haven't had much luck :(

You can buy a tattoo at the ball Talmina. Not tribal though
Oh man, I've just had to give my Maruman mask idea the flick. It was going to be awesome, but I just couldn't get the plain mask I was going to decorate to fit with my glasses (also I haven't gotten too far in The Red Queen and am a little paranoid that he's going to die - don't tell me!). Back to the drawing board.
Kaede--I'm wearing pants!
What about you have something attach directly onto your glasses rather than a mask?
Thanks, Pip. I just finished constructing two lightweight masks with wire attachments which I can wind around the frame. Not the fanciest things, but I will be able to see once I decide which one i am going with :D
Cool. I'll look out for you.
I hope can tolerate my contacts. I've only won them a couple of times in the last 2 years.
Otherwise I will look rather funny either with my glasses over my mask or bumping into stuff. ;)
Worst case scenario, my work sometimes has me guiding blind clients so you'd be in (mostly) safe hands :)
On the other hand, if I can't get in to pick up some more hemming tape I might be tripping all over the place. Did not think I would need over 5m of the stuff!
