Chrismas Special

It was an interesting special this year, but I don't feel it was as good as previous offerings.

Michael Gambon was good in his role, but the events on the ship felt like they had been tacked on. Might change my opnion with a second viewing.

The flying fish were good though!

Trailer for the next season

There were some interesting things on that trailer: Looks like the Ood will be back, and did anyone else spot the inside of the ship from the last season episode 'The Lodger'?

i really enjoyed the christmas special it was cool and was more emotional plus the thing on marilyn monroe was funny

Russell T Davies has told the world not to rule out crossovers between Torchwood and Who, even though the former has (sort of) moved to America. "Steven Moffat said he's love to see Jack in Doctor Who. So if Steven says that, then Steven will make it happen" said Davies.

Umm...Doctor is now immortal? But...from the sounds of the article they don't even explain it, it's just said and accepted. So...what about all those times where they've said 13? Does a Time Lord now have to choose to not regenerate (like the Master did during 10's era)?

Remember that Russel T Davies's approach to the new Doctor Who involved ignoring or changing any parts of the old Doctor Who universe that he wanted to. (How much of that was on purpose is another question.) Besides, assuming the show is still successful at the point where they need to find a fourteenth Doctor do you think they would worry about the dozen regenerations rule from old Doctor Who? There's already one immortal character (in the can't-be-killed sense), i.e., Captain Jack, but it could be argued that the whole energy-from-the-TARDIS thing where Rose did that to Jack also managed to "reset" the Doctor's own regeneration counter.

Still, no matter how many things from the new show don't quite fit with the old show nothing could be as bad as the eighth Doctor movie, which in my opinion was pretty terrible even taken on its own while trying to ignore the numerous contradictions with the TV show. But I like the new show a lot.

RE River Song, it is possible that she is the Doctor's daughter (Genny). She needs to come back fairly soon, although I'm not sure exactly how it would work and they seem to have a different relationship. It would explain why they keep running into each other so often, and how she can fly the TARDIS. It also fits with River being so good with a gun.
Bibliophile

Steven Moffat has pretty much promised that we'll be learning a lot more about River this year. Obviously there's a lot more to her than we've seen yet, but the idea that's she's the Doctor's daughter? That's just disturbing given the obvious romantic relationship (however one-sided and unexplained it might be to date).

I would like to see Jenny back though: I think it would make for an interesting reunion scene given that she presumably doesn't realise that the Doctor changes appearance with each regeneration. At least, going purely from the information presented directly in the episode when she originally appeared she didn't get much chance to learn anything about Time Lords before she "died".

There's no news on Jenny making an appearance next season.

However we will find out who River Song is, but not necessarily who she is in relation to the Doctor (blame SM for that one). He has also said that we will find out what the silence is (and quite soon into the season too), and what made the TARDIS explode.

Here's the latest trailer that the BBC has been showing for the 2011 season (starts with some 2010 stuff). There's some good clips of Doctor Who in there.

Ashes to Ashes star Marshall Lancaster will appear in Doctor Who episodes "Rebel Flesh"/"Gangsters", a two-part story written by Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes co-creator Mathew Graham.

Daniel Mays, also of Ashes to Ashes fame, will appear in a later episode.

I doubt they will tell us how his regeneration cycle has been renewed and extended.

New viewers won't necessarily know too much about it, and classic viewers may be annoyed by it, so my guess is that it will be kept quiet for the time being

I know this is irrelevant to the discussion at hand but you've just mentioned two of my favourite things in the world (besides IC): discworld and ashes to ashes/LOM. just had to show my appreciation for your impeccable taste...

That's such sad news about Nicholas Courtney. Episodes with Three and the Brigadier remain some of my favourites. I was so hoping he'd be able to do a cameo in the new series. I guess I'll have to track down the Sarah Jane Adventures episode he was in. There are some lovely Brig-ly pictures here though -> Pics

He was always good in whatever episodes he was in. You definitely need to watch the SJA episodes with him in. Aside from the ones with the Doctor, they are some of the best!

Apparently the new season will be a lot darker than the last one, so we should hopefully be back to SM at his best.

The first two episodes will be a two-parter set in Arizona

Doctor Who will return in April. No broadcast date as yet, but I suspect the Easter weekend (which is annoying as I am away on holiday then)

Well, most of SM's stories were dark or creepy (think of the original Weeping Angels episode, or The Silence in the Library) so I guess the whole season will be more like that. (Lets hope it gets as dark as the Tom Baker/Peter Davidson gothic era of Classic Who)

Not sure what the story is about set in Arizona, but it should be good!

I can't wait to see it :) One other thing I can add about the first episode is that it is apparently set in the 1960s.

I'm not sure about SM's dark twist on Doctor Who. I mean, I like it, but not necessarily all the time. Then again its been a few months since I've watched any of his stories. I don't think I've seen the Tom Baker/Peter Davidson gothic era. DO, do you know if Time-Flight and Arc of Infitity fall into that category? If so I'll have to rewatch them :)

I wouldn't call those two stories gothic. And I wouldn't re-watch them (but that's just because they both have my least favourite companion). I think Tom Baker's gothic phase was when Sarah Jane was still around.

I really liked Blink, by SM, but I wouldn't say it was dark. Even rewatching it I find myself much more tense than for almost all of the other new episodes, which is cool given that the angels aren't that scary compared to some of the other monsters given that they just send you back in time rather than killing you. (The fourth wall thing was really cool too, and the fact that they didn't keep that for the return of the angels with the next doctor disappointed me no end.)

Thanks N. I must admit, they're not my favourite episodes, but they're the oldest I've got. Otherwise, I've just got the new season 1 (I'm attempting to convince my brother to get me season 2. Much better season :))

I loved Carey Mulligan's performance in Blink, and I will say that I wished we could see more of her character at some point. That said, the idea behind Blink, and the writing/atmposphere, was what I think gave it a darker side, the brilliant acting making it a flawless composition. I should try and watch it again :)

My favourite SM episode, and in fact Doctor Who episode is Girl in the Fireplace. Not that that's anywhere near being 'dark'.

The girl in the fireplace does have some dark elements, where the clockwork robots are using human parts to repair the ship...

Timeflight and Arc of Infinity were end of season 19/beginning of season 20 of Classic Who. They were outside the gothic era.

Season 14's last story 'The Talons of Weng-Chiang' is a good one to watch, as is season 21's finale 'The Caves of Androzani'

Season 14's last story 'The Talons of Weng-Chiang' is a good one to watch, as is season 21's finale 'The Caves of Androzani'

In my opinion "The Caves of Androzani" is a good place to stop with classic Who, because it was the last one before Colin Baker took over and I didn't like him (although to be fair he's not to blame for the scripts). I didn't like Sylvester McCoy either. I did like all five of the first five Doctors, with Tom Baker being my favourite and Lalla Ward my favourite companion.
