Obernewtyn.net 2010 Calendar Art Competition!

Due to last year's success, Obernewtyn.net is running a competition for a 2010 calendar! If you're interested in purchasing a 2009 calendar, or viewing the entries, see this thread. Similar to last year, we are looking to select twelve pieces of artwork to feature in the 2010 calendar, and another to be the cover. Once completed, the calendar will be be made available to all members to purchase at the end of 2009 at our zazzle store. Each Calendar sold will put about $1AUD toward Obernet's site fees and the rest of the price is the cost of the calendar itself to make it as cheap as possible. Competition is open from now, until the [strike]1st[/strike] 30th November 2009 Submission Guidelines:
  • Images need to be of your own creation and in no way, shape or form use copywrited images. If you use any copywrited images (from book covers to stock photos), your submission won't be included.
  • Text/quotes should be avoided if possible, again due to copywrite issues. Anything we see as a potential breach of copywrite will be replaced by penguins! |:|
  • DO NOT PUT ANY BORDERS AROUND YOUR IMAGE. For consistency, we'll be putting our own border on it (it'll just be a solid colour).
  • Final images need to be 11.5" x 9", and between 100 and 300 dpi resolution, in the .png format. It is recommended you use this template to ensure your design is the right size. Based on last year's calendar, can we ask members to have their designs covered all the way to the edge, even if it just some background colour. Unfortunately, a few of the 2009 entries who had white borders came out a bit uneven during printing and resulted with random strips of white on the sides of their entries. Please also make sure that any important details are kept within the first rectangle, again to ensure they are not omitted during final printing.
  • When submitting your designs to the gallery, you will need to save and upload a 600 x 470 pixel .jpg for previewing.
  • You must be OKAY with the possibility that Obernet will use and publish your image in the calendar.
Submission Suggestions: This year we have established the following categories for people to design their artwork around. These categories are most likely going to be one image per month, depending on how many enteries we receive. Listed next to these categories are prompts to inspire your creative genius! There is also a 'free choice' category for you to submit entries that do not fall into the other categories, or are inspired from other Art competitions run around the site. In the spirit of creativity, why not experiment with media? Let us see your own illustrations, or exercise your skills in Photoshopping: go beyond labelling stock photos, and instead create a whole montage of Obernewtyn-themed shots, or blend your own drawings with photos, text, and effects to create a digital artwork. The possibilities are limitless, so why not try something innovative, and practice your technique? Rather than seeing a photo as a finished product, view it as a base to build upon and Ober-fy :D The main categories are as follows:
  • Obernewtyn (general) How Obernewtyn looks, depiction of your favourite character, Agyllians in their ken
  • The Stone Key, bk5 OberChrons INES, the masks in the Halfmoon Bay festival, Elspeth's sea journey
  • Alzyon Whitestarr
  • Nightgate Trilogy something that relates to a firecat, some dogs, a doorway
  • Greylands Mirrors/reflection
  • Legendsong Trilogy Ember and Glynna and their roles as the 'Unraveller' and 'Soul Saver', map of the world
  • Little Fur Little Fur, her animal friend/s, The Old Ones
  • Scatterlings
  • Green Monkey Dreams
  • The Gathering Nathaniel's symbol, the school
Some other ideas may include artworks to represent:
  • Obernewytn.net's relative fandoms - but related to Obernewtyn.net
  • Obernewtyn.net special events (e.g. Moonfair, Mystic's Ball, RPGs, or our big 10 year anniversary!)
  • Guild pages (though, preferably incorporating all the guilds ;))
  • Other Isobelle Caromdy's works (e.g. see here for a list of Isobelle's stories)
  • Landscape images (e.g. How does Tor, Obernewtyn, Acantha, Little Fur's abode look like?)
  • Elspeth having a conversation with a penguin
  • Draw Rushton with his 'true love' etc. etc.!
There shall also be bonus points award for how artfully contestants can work in the following items into their submissions. This will be judged on how well they fit into the overall theme, how many items were incorporated etc.

  • Penguin
  • Pig
  • Sonic Screwdriver
  • Apple
What you get for submitting artwork: The Big Gain: Your design gets printed and posted all around the world! Each image we receive will have a watermark added to the image somewhere, saying who's done it, which guild they're from, and which state/country they're from. The Small Gain: a small amount of guild points for your first three entries. Since the focus of this competition is quality over quantity, we encourage members who are only serious about having their designs published to enter. We will award 5 guild points each for your first three entries into the competition (maximum of 15 points). Finally, HOW to submit your designs: If you've made it this far - and are still keen on entering - here's how!
  • Design your calendar image adhering to the submission guidelines.
  • Save a copy as a .jpg, and resize to 600x470px.
  • Go to the Calendar Competition Gallery.
  • Upload your 600x470px .jpg to the gallery. Ensure your USERNAME is in the image title somewhere, and ensure you don't use any special-characters from your keyboard - just use a-z (capicals ok) and 0-9.
  • .zip and email your full-size, high-quality .png to Min
How the winning designs will be chosen: Around the 2nd of November, after the artwork section of the competition has closed, details will be made available on how to vote for which pieces of artwork you would like to see featured for each month. This way, everyone on Obernet can enter, and anyone can win. It's a calendar for Obernewtyn.net members - voted by the members! ;) If you have any questions about the Calendar competition or wish to discuss ideas with other members, please visit 'The 2010 Calendar Comp' thread in Artistmerge. Otherwise - get creative and upload that artwork!
