But can they change the pix on the covers which have his missing eye swapping with his real eye? :P
FINISHED!!
I know I'm probably a bit later than all you quick readers, but it's gone and read, and I can't quite believe it's over. I'm one of these people that when I read, I let the book consume me a bit and I forget to eat, and don't really sleep because I'm so focussed on what's happening. Not all books... Just special ones. ie: HP7 and this one, and a few others... and no doubt THE SENDING. When it gets here.
Here's a few of my thoughts"
Domick: *Cries* He was one of my favourites. I loved the relationship he had with Kella. I never thought that Kella would get to him before he died though, partly because I knew that that had to happen with Elspeth and Rushton and there couldn't be two mad tortured males who are brought back to sanity by the women they love. I thought that the scene with him in the chamber where Elspeth was talking to him, and he kept becoming Mika was incredible. WHAT A SUPERB PIECE OF WRITING! I felt such pity and sympathy for him. What he must have been feeling is beyond belief... the guilt after helping Ariel torture Rushton, his best friend. When Rushton saw him lying there in the chamber, I think I wanted a stronger reaction from him... it just seemed really cold... even though I know he was a bit messed up in the head at the time. So yes... devastation at Domick. At one stage I wanted Elspeth to just give him a big hug.. despite him being contagious, especially when she was talking about Obernewtyn and he smiled...
Elspeth: I truly don't know how I feel about Elspeth at the moment. She annoys me in so many ways, but I have to say she improved drastically in this book. I'm so glad to finally see she is losing the cold, distant, hard edge she seems to have to her. She seemed more youthful towards the end which was good to see as well. She seemed so old having all these people calling her 'guildmistress' all the time, and her manner. I realise a lot of it is self-preservation because of the task she has to complete. She just gets so 'snappy' sometimes, especially with the younger misfits... but before everyone rises to attack me for saying these things about Dear Elf. I do like her overall and I'll say this about her. She Kicks [censored].
The Herder Isle Scene: I thought this was brilliantly done. Especially the Shadows. I felt such pity and 'horrification' (it's a word I made up derived from horrified. LOL) at what was done to the women, with their tongues and the men who had the dirt encrusted weeping sores... I loved how they rose up and fought for their freedom. The wet tainted rags were a stroke of genius. and I so wanted to give Mouse a cuddle, Poor kid!
Did anyone else find it hard to keep track of whether or not they were in control of Herder Isle? I got a bit lost with it, because I think I thought it was all won.. and then there was a big war later with the hedra/herders and norselanders. *confusion*
Rushton: Brought me to tears. The scene when Elspeth was in the glass compartment was so powerful. Especially when she showed him how to open it and just said 'I love you' so simply. I loved it! and then he put his cheek in her hand. Best bit! I'm glad he turned out ok. It kind of made up for Domick a wee bit. But I was thinking... how awful will it be for Kella when she finds out what happened to Domick, and then see's Rushton who went through much the same thing and is all back and whole again thanks to Elspeth. I'd imagine she would be more than kicking herself that she never had the opportunity to heal him or help him at all.
Bruna/Dardelan Elspeth! Quit spying! ::) I was so happy they got together though. Even though it was borderline mills and boon. I think if Elf hadn't got out of there at that moment it would have got VERY mills and boon. ;D
Salamander/Suresh I totally agree with this theory. It fits so perfectly... the only thing that gets me is motive WHY would Suresh do this... I know she's been rejected by her family but would that be enough to motivate her to kidnap and hurt and kill all those people? Salamander is so ruthless... How could Suresh be capable of it unless she had some huge motivating factor. It can't be just her family... can it?
Destroyer I still think it's Ariel. I don't know what to make of that final dream with Matthew. I think I need to re-read it, but I can't imagine it would be him unless he had absolutely no idea what he was doing. I mean, he hasn't even been in contact with computers like Dell and Jak and Elspeth. How on earth is he supposed to activate it? Ariel has been in some contact though as we can see from his creepy underground lair. I need some time to refine and formulate my theories. I'm really scattered cause I've only just finished.
and finally... ARIEL: If by some twisted stroke of fate he doesn't die in The Sending.. I will be VERY VERY Pished.
So yes! The End of my thoughts for now!!

RE: Ariel's death-How does everyone think Ariel is going to die? I've been thinking about this and I don't think it'll be Elspeth, it seems like Matthew and him may have been set up for a major showdown, especially if they meet up in LOTR and then later in the tunnels. Although her killing power must be for something.
"I can't imagine it would be him unless he had absolutely no idea what he was doing. I mean, he hasn't even been in contact with computers like Dell and Jak and Elspeth. How on earth is he supposed to activate it?"
The fact that Ariel is Bringer of Destruction says to me that he'll either lead or goad the Destroyer into accidentally using the machines, so it wouldn't matter if Matthew didn't have much technological know-how. But he's not the Destroyer, IMO.
And what does Louis know that he is so eager to hide?????

S P A C E F I L L E R I don't really see the Destroyer (aka Matthew :P) as someone who will be tricked/forced into doing something by the H'ryaka. The way I see it is Matty may wanna activate the machines in hopes of freeing the people of the Red Land. The only problem I see with that is that apparently the Destroyer doesn't know what he is doing.
Still - perhaps Matty doesn't know/realise that unleashing the weapons will result in utter desolation.
Alwayslove mentioned the boy Mouse from Herder Isle. - I wonder if he will come back into it. And the fact that his name is Mouse... a mouse is a animal - could it mean he will play a part (:P prolly not, but I think his character will come back in some way).

Just a thought................
probably not a spoiler but oh well..... I was thinking of all the dreams of Matthew and co digging in the quarry where Etina lives. These slaves have to be there for a reason just as there is a reason for everything else that happens in these books. Elf can't get into the sentinel building to use the memory seed if it's been buried by the great white. the slaves will uncover it so she will be able to get in. the mention of taking slaves away from the LotRQ cold mean that the entrance is almost uncovered so the slaves won't be needed anymore. This tells me that the destroyer knows where Elf will go and considering that Ariel is on his way to the LotRQ with Salamander he probably has some plan to meet her there and also to meet up with the destroyer if he isn't. I hope that makes sense as I am very tired.

BEFORE YOU READ - I'm a new member and I don't know how to hide the spoilers - sorry! someone please tell me.
I love everyone's theories. I'm a new member and I finished the book about half an hour ago. I cried when domick died, and had to put the book down and go away a few times because I could tell what was going to happen to Elspeth but was too excited to read about it!!
My theories:
I agree with the Suresh-Salamander. I've always thought he was a she.
The sword is the missing sceptre of the Red Queen, the one that Dragon is supposed to take with her. Matthew is told in one of the dreams that the queen will return with the sceptre.
I really loved that the Misfits on the West coast changed and developed whilst away form Obernewtyn. They are no longer defined by their talents - I think what each of them was saying was that at Obernewtyn, people are expected to act certain ways according to their talents, but each of the people on the West coast has formed other interests and their talents are now only one part of them. Look at Dell. At Obernewtyn she was serious and sombre because that's how futeretellers were. But she turned into a woman of power, who had a sense of humour and took an interest in computers and loves to cook. Sorry if this is a bit deep, I'm a teacher and I can't help it!
Anyway I'll come back with more theories. Does anyone know when The Sending comes out? PLEASE let it be soon.
Hey Erin :) To hide spoliers, put spoiler tags around the words you want to hide: [ spoiler ] [ /spoiler ] (without the spaces)
Welcome!
I'm going to focus on the vague spots, because I think everyone has pretty much dealt with all the important matters :)
Dragon's disappearance: which I believe I made a note of in my first post, no second post in this thread, anyway the book only made a small note of it, which was Elspeth pondering over it, and that's pretty much it. I guess it sparks the question what was the nature of the disappearance? Considering the fact that Dragon had a rather strong attachment to both Kella and Katlyn, why just randomly disappear? Could it be that she got kidnapped? Maybe by the likes of Ariel, with his rather crystal clear furturetelling talent, and sees the importance of Dragon to Elspeth?
Kella: alright obviously whilst reading the book, and Domick being infected with the plague, basically question on everyone's mind was WHERE THE HELL IS KELLA? To find out that she's returned to Obernewtyn "before the news could be passed onto her". Question: Why the sudden return to Obernewtyn? Maybe because a message came through from Maryon seeking her return or what? We know from Iriny, that when she saw Kella that her aura was wrong. And I've been reading TKP, and in TKP Kella's aura was then "green shot through with a festering streak of red, shading to purple at the edges like a faded bruise", Elspeth notes later down how dangerous the negative feelings are. Maybe the red streak has festered to the rest of her aura? Why? Because of Domick? or because of Dragon?
I recon that the whole of hte obernewtyn community will know about her quest, somehow...in fact i just had the thought of it being like something ariel might do to spite her, and then it would backfire in his pretty face...my mental image atm is something like this:
Ariel: and now the whole lifestyle that you have finally produced will die, for those that you hide from shall know the truth about you
Elf: Noooooooooooooooooo, they will see who i truly am
Mental thoughts of everyone person everywhere: wow, this chick is pretty sweet, fo shiz. stand by her, get rid of that pansy dude, man (don't know why the homme talk)
Rushton: I lover you my elspeth
Dames: I lover ze Elspeth too
and yeah somethign amusing like that
but yeah i recon ppl will know about the quest, whether as a 'side effect' of her success/possibility of failure, or that the world needs to know to start the finishing of it...if that makes sense
i was extremely disappointed with The Stone Key. I have waited ages for it to come out and i felt that by the time Isobelle Carmody had got to writing it she was over the storey. It was a real huge disappointment. There where also a few character errors (ie characters being where they where not meant to be) and spelling and grammer errors, which i dont understand because the official release was pushed back a couple of months.

[act]grugs double-post monster[/act]
DPM: Hey! This isn't a double-post!
Min: :D do we need a reason to hug you, you...you ol' thing you? [act]plugs Double-post-monster competition[/act]
There, that takes care of the spoilers.
Brownie - PMSL. I want a homie-talking Ariel action figure :P
I hope some people find out about Elspeth's quest. But not the whole community. The end of the quest should mark a time of rest for Elspeth, and if she's put into such awe by the whole community (as such a revelation would undoubtedly put her in)...well, she won't feel like she fits in, all over again. hugs the new huggable-Elspeth
Perhaps that's what Atthis means by there'll be nothing left for Elspeth once her quest is complete...but I doubt it.
Bit of a different topic...the price Elf will have to pay. Some people have talked about it already...I'm still at a loss to what this could be. Someone else dying?
ClareMay, what in particular didn't you like about it? I didn't feel the tiniest bit that Isobelle was over the story myself; if anything, she was more into it. We got insight into characters we've previously just seen in passing, and a whole host of new characters, places, theories. TSK is my favourite of the entire series because it knits so much together yet still leaves us guessing, and despite the wait being so long we hadn't pre-guessed anything, really.
Do the errors really define your liking of a book to that extent?
Basically there's nothing wrong with having your own opinion, but I'm interested in an elaboration of why you disliked it so much.
Well i finally finished it last night and to say that i enjoyed it would be an understatement... it was soo good... when i first started reading it was hard to comprehend the fact i was reading a new obernewtyn book but once i got passed that it was 1000 pages of wonderment...
Ok so most of my thoughts have already been said but i'll re-state them just for the heck of it...
So im agreeing that this book basically confirmed that Matthew was the Destroyer, but in confirming it that obviously, it makes me suspect that maybe it's not Matthew... but then i don't know who else it would be... but the whole Matthew as a tool of Ariel sounds plausible... he is going to the land of the Red Queen.
Salamander- so when i read the bit about the room with all the cfine clothing at Ariel's residence i though "Maybe the Destroyer is female"... i didnt however make the Surresh connection... but it sounds plausible as well...
The mistakes did irritate me a little bit but i was able to work out what was meant most of the time... the whole boats going into Norseland and wondering whether the third boat made it or if Brydda was actually on it or not... it was a moment of confusion for me...
Domick- poor Domick! I am in agreeance that it would have been nice if Kella was there though... but it was very sudden... just all of a sudden he just dies... but i guess that's the way the plague worked...
Rushton/ Elspeth... very i am legend when he's trying to get at her in the cage... but the going through the layers of his mind bit was sweet... but the price to pay bit does puzzle me... i guess ill have to wait for the Sending... but yes, it was refreshing at the end to see them happy together, opposed to the hate/ upset thing that was going on earlier...
Elspeth communicating to Cassy on the laptop!- Woah... just woah... and it dieing before she could finish what she was saying... Remember what Cassy! What does Elspeth have to remember! Another waiting for the Sending for answers point...
There was something else i was going to comment on... i can't think of it tho... that'll do for now...
This was a truely enjoyable book, I was so excited when I found it in the bookstore last thrusday, I was like oMGWTF and ran inside to grab it.
Did anyone but me think it was really cute how rolf's greathorse (who's name escapes me) was all "Oh I can't join your herd I have to go back and take care of my little brother" ?
Also I have a weird inkling that dameon has a thing for elf this is for a few reasons
a. first of all best friends to lovers thing - pretty self explanitry
b. in the third book when dameon decides to stay in sador the scene goes thusly
' Rushton reached out and gripped his shoulder "dameon I know why you would remain here" To my surprise the empath flushed "then you must let me stay" ' since this is pretyt much just after rushton and elf hook up, and rushton knows whats going down I can't help but feel its related. I think possibly Dameon likes elf but being an empath he knows her feelings for rushton so he decided not to interfere
c. in the stone key, when dameon is convinceing elf that rushton still loves her he laughs "and it seemed to me a queer sort of laugh: cruel almost wild"I think perhaps he's laughing at the irony of his love for her never being realised and such.
while I know that elf loves rushton and even if dameon presented his feelings she's reject him, I still can't help but feel that he does secretly love her. Though admittedly after the return of gilbert in this book (man that [censored] me off) I think it'd be incredibly lame to have another character confessing his undieing love for her.
I thought it was awsome that everyone in the book opened up a bit more, elf galtha and maruman aren't so formal with eachother and since they're usually the most used characters in the series thats a nice change.
The only thing about this entire book which I didn't like was the phsyical size and weight of the book D: it doesn't match the sizes of the other obernewtyn books on my bookshelf wrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyy? =P

I don't have the book yet and I've read all the spoilers and I'm sitting here trying to figure it all out. This book sounds incredible. I can't wait to read it. Aaaaahhhhhhhhhh (cry of agony for not having it yet). Does Gilbert really confess his undying love for her? Ha ha. What does everyone mean by 'he's annoying'? I rather liked him in the farseekers. How did asword become involved in the story? Are any of the Misfits living away from Obernewtyn now that the Land is free?
read the book nemo!!!!!!!!!!! its great!!!!!!!!! i read it yesterday and i still cant believe ive got a new obernewtyn book to read a dozen more times...im just hoping the wait for the Sending won't be as long as the wait for this one!!!
i think seresh is most probably salamander- it makes so much sense for jakoby's story otherwise im not sure where it would be relevent, also the room in arials place...
as for matthew having a role as destroyer or whatever i just dont want to believe it!!!! it would be so cruel!! **crying**
as for gilbert i feel a bit sorry for him...but im glad rushton and elf are happy again!! yay
anyway im going to go read it again a bit more slowly...
Nemo, perhaps you could put your post under spoiler tags? XD To do this, just put [ spoiler ] and [ /spoiler ] around your info, but without the spaces :)
I finished at 2am thismorning. my eyes feel like there is a beach worth of sand in them.
I LOVE this book but yes- My arms got sore holding it too!
I had the thought that Seresh was the woman at Ariels resedence as soon as she was mentioned.
Im pretty much inline iwht most of whats been said also-
would love to see a cross dressing Ariel (stardust anyone?)
But how cranky do u thing Maruman would be if he knew Elf had seen him as a cute an cuddly kitten? It makes me think more than ever that his grumpiness is put on as muuvh as real.
so tired. naptime now...
well I finished a couple of days ago and have been diligently reading everyone's posts!
I adored this book!!!!!!
I loved the change in Elspeth, her becoming huggable and generally growing up a little in many ways.
I am alo in agrreement with many of the things being said, my first thought about the sword was that it's for Dragon too.
I am really intrigued about Miryum still. I really liked her and really hope she's not dead. But it does seem unlikely seeing how Straaka died and she's meant to be with him. But maybe there is something tricky going on (I hope).
I loved all the action - so much action!!! I could've really used a map of the cloister though; I'm a bit spacially challenged.
There are so many things to gush about!!!! And mostly they've all been gushed about before so I'll try to resist a little, as we all know them.
I wonder if Dragon will somehow manage to get to the Red Land without going with Elf??? I know it sounds luney but it was just my first gut feeling.
Oh Matthew...noooooooooo, tis too sad.
I thought maybe the price that will have to be paid may indeed be that Atthis dies, and maybe before the quest finishes - but if we think about it, that has repercussions for Elf's quest maybe that is the real price.
I'm glad everyone seems to have enjoyed it as much as I have!
Ok, so I'm with everyone on the Salamander/Jakoby's sister theory. The only thing that makes me hesitate is that Ariel is soooooo vain - how could he handle such a deformed creature and he is apparently the only person Salamander will unmask in front of.
Now, I read the book in a non-stop rush sitting (I promise I'll go back and re-read more slowly) but I got the impression that the 'masters' Domick referred to were not Ariel and Salamander but Ariel and someone else - WHO??? Any ideas?
While I am absolutely devasted about Dameon's unrequited love, I think you have to admire Isobelle's writing regarding Rushton and Elf... We only see their relationship through Elf's less than observant eyes and so we get her hopeless at the soul mate thing view of Rushton. We all like Dameon more because of her 'friendship' perception of him, she doesn't feel nervous or awkward. So we just get to see what a darling friend he is.
WHile we're on this note, did anyone notice that part of Ariel's Rushton torture was that Elf would leave him.... I'm a little worried and banking on the notion that Isobelle is a hopeless romantic and simply wouldn't do something to us that would leave us all in tears at the end of the sending because Elf really has had to leave him.
