The syntax is vaguely similar to html code, which is used to format webpages.
Highlighting your text and clicking on the relevant formatting button will automatically add the BBCode for you, but we're explaining the codes here for anyone who's interested, and for anyone who wants to use BBCode functionality where the formatting buttons aren't present (comments, private messages, quick reply, etc).
