  Now, Unys - I imdb'ed Cate Blanchett, and found movies in which she's played a mother, and voila, there's a girl who played her daughter in The Missing, Jenna Boyd who certainly looks as though she could pull off the snobby little brat Unys :P
  
  she's currently about 13.
  
  Ooh, and just had a crazy idea...what about Toni Collette for Duran?
  
  She's the sort of person you definately wouldn't want to come up against in a fight...
  
  Ok, talk about 6 degrees of seperation...Toni's imdb lead me to Nicholas Hoult. Could he play Kerd, do you think? He seemed really sweet in About A Boy.

  Yes!! Jenna Boyd makes a much better Unys!! thumbs up to all of your choices.
  
  especially Toni Collette. I was having a really hard time trying to find a mature blonde actress that has a good head on her shoulders. and Toni Collette definitely fits the mould.

  So I know it has been a while since anyone commented on this thread but I was reading back through it and I just can't quite picture Missy Higgins doing Ember justice...

  I know she is a bit older than Ember and Glynn in the book but she has a really young face and I reckon she could pass for 19 -20 ish. Also, I totally think that she looks like she could be related to Abbie Cornish!

  ok CRAZY idea for Duran... but Gemma Ward? I know she's primarily a model but she does acting too... i think if she got her muscles up and acted strong, she would be a fantastic Duran! Ive just never liked Toni Collette... i was an extra in a movie she did once and she was the BIGGEST b**ch ever, so rude to everyone.

  They do look a like, but I think they'd still need different actors. I think that most of their resemblance has to do with their faces, I think I read somewhere that Solen was built heavier than Wind, with broader shoulders and stuff.

  Gemma Ward for Duran?? I am not so sure - I saw her in 'The Black Balloon' and while she put in a reasonable effort she is just too ethereal and fragile-looking to be Duran - she would have to be an awesome actress and she just aint...
  
  Plus, you say she could build herself up a little but there goes her modelling career! I just think that her main focus is modelling and that she would have to be super-committed to the idea to put in enough physically and dramatically to pull it off.
  
  By the way, just out of curiosity, what movie were you an extra on?? :P I totally can't imagine Toni Collette being a [censored] - she looks so down-to-earth! :(
  
  
  EDIT: In an attempt to revive this thread, has anyone got any comments on my proposed Ember - Isla Fisher - the link I put up to a photo of her is one that really makes me see her potential as Ember, particulary with Abbie Cornish as her twin...there is some similarity about those two...

  I was in "hey hey its ester blueberger" - small australian film. She just demanded stupid things all the time, was mean to everyone and expected everyone to be at her beck and call.
  With Gemma... she skipped New York Fashion Week to audition for The Strangers... she has always said she wanted to be an actress but got hooked in with modelling. haha i guess it is just a crazy idea... I just really like her :)
  
  To your Isla Fisher idea... shes got a cuteness about her but i always imagined someone more fair with freckles but shes got the hair i imagined. has she done any serious roles before?

  Good question Phoebe about Isla Fisher though - I am unsure if she has done anything serious. I know she can be quite funny and she has been in quite a few comedies but I don't know if that is her preference or if it is just what she has had the opportunity to do so far...then again, she is married to Sacha Baron-Cohen so she must appreciate a good laugh :-"
  
  Maybe she would be up to it....If she calls herself an actress you would hope so.... As to the paleness though I think she is quite pale naturally but she has succumbed to the fake tan syndrome in hollywood.

  Isla Fisher definitely has the right look for Ember, but I'm still in love with her character actually being an actual musician...yes, I know this never happens in the movies :P but hey, I can dream.
  
  As well as that, whenever I see Isla in anything, all I can think is Scooby Doo, and Wog Boy. Not that I didn't like her in those, but that I'd personally love for Ember to be a lesser-known actor (/musician!! :P ).

  Yeah, it would be awesome if the actress was a musician. Although, it seems these days that even when the actress actually does her own vocals, they are prerecorded and perfected to the extreme so that when the actress sings in the movie it doesn't look natural anyway.... I am thinking of Glee in particular ::)
  
  And Min, I had completely forgotten about Isla Fisher being in Scooby Doo XD...I don't know that we should even be admitting we have seen that movie ~:| I personally always remember her performance in Wedding Crashers... she was such a nut job... :P

  The other thing I remember her from is The Wannabees, which is hilarious...but at the same time, she's such a bogan Aussie in that (her accent is just so hammed up and awful)..anyway. Yeah, I know we shouldn't judge a person based on what they've been in already :P but while she's gorgeous, Isla also has a bit of a...fake look about her?
  
  Re: music - yeah, they'd re-record stuff. But I think there's a dramatic difference on screen between someone who can sing and someone who clearly cannot - I've studied music (piano mainly) all my child + teenage life, so maybe this annoys me more than most people. When people sing on screen - even when they're all being dubbed later - it will look fake if they only match the words. They need to match the volume, if that makes any sense. And if it's a different person's voice doing the singing - the vocal intonations don't usually match the person who does all the speaking parts...
  This is something that only annoys me, right? :P

  Love some of these suggestions!
  
  I always imagined Solen/Wind to be quite muscular with a somewhat stocky frame. So, maybe Takeshi Kaneshiro looks a bit too thin for what I imagined.
  
  It's kind of weird to think of Glynn and Ember as being only 16. They act a lot older in the book, so I envisage them being played by actressess in their early twenties. Abbie Cornish is a great idea for Glynn, but she would need to get very fit for that role :D

  I think maybe the actors pretending to sing does annoy you a little more than the average bear, Min! :P I just think of Glee and I know they all sing their own songs but it is really obvious that they are all pre-recorded as the actors are so over-the-top as they mime along for the take that appears on tv! I am thinking mainly of Mr Schuster though so maybe his over-the-top-ness has something to do with his stage background - all movements and emotions have to be big so that the people in the back row get it too...
  
  But anyway, I can see my Isla Fisher idea is not a hit :"( hehe...How about Amy Adams, then? I know she isn't Australian but she can act and sing - at least she did in Enchanted!! ;) I don't know if she could pull of the darkness off Ember though - she has a kind of squeaky voice, doesn't she? Plus you want like an authentic musician too - not just an actress that can sing....hmm...

  Perhaps Emma Roberts for Ember but not Avril Lavigne!! She is just not a talented enough actor to pull it off - I am cringing already at the thought of her attempting Ember! ~:| he he
  
  I love your suggestion of Ziyi Zhang for Hella and Elle Fanning for Rilka - on the money with those ones in my opinion!
  
  Although, I am not convinced by either option for Glynn - she is a little more rough that those actresses you suggest and I just can't see it...Mia is a fantastic actress though so she might be able to pull it off.
