  What do you think of Death being the narrator?
  What do you think of Death's view of the world in colours?

  I only just bought the book.. .so will have to quickly read it to participate... but wanted to also point out that the book is not by Frank Beddor but by Markus Zusak.... :P

  I just finished it. And I am absolutely bawling, the last few chapters were just devastating :-/
  
  I'm not sure if I should use spoiler tags in this thread, but since it's for discussion of a book we're meant to read, I'll go without.
  
  I thought the book was a bit slow to begin with, the first half just seemed to be about Liesel gathering her appreciation for books. For me it started to get really interesting when Max came into the story, I liked the interaction between the two of them and I spent the rest of the book hoping he would return and be ok :P
  
  The Death-as-narrator thing was interesting, I think it worked well. Instead of having the book in third-person perspective, just have it in first-person of an all knowing character (which is pretty much the same thing :P )
  
  The ending...ok, I knew it wasn't going to be sunshine and flowers, but I wasn't expecting it to hurt as much as it did. I didn't think I was really all that into the book, but the death of Hans and Rudy was like getting punched in the face.
  At least Max came back into it, if something had happened to him I'd probably be more of a mess.

  Firstly - apologies for any misspelling - I have a headache and my typing and idea forming becomes awful when I have headaches like this.
  
  I read the book last year during the (British) summer (well - it was supposedly summer then back in August but I saw very little evidence of that)
  
  I Loved Death. As a narrator I thought he worked so well and it gave such a different slant to the book. The colours were also an interesting addition as I sometimes see days as colours, and as a result of being able to see auras I occasionally come to associate people with colours, so I could actually relate to that strangely.
  
  Its interesting what you said HotD about not thinking you were that involved with the characters as I remember that wwas exactly the way I felt. Then, despite not thinking myself that involved and also having been told that many people were going to die well in advance, I found myself crying (something that I rarely do with books I must add) constantly all through that terrible chapter where Liesel finds them dead.
  
  And then to leave us never really knowing what happened to all the characters... I don't know what I wanted but all I could think about for days were the unanswered questions - how did she end up in Australia? What did she do? What became of Max? What about her mother?
  
  Max really was an inspiration, his story was so different to anything I've ever read that could vaguely be said to fall into the same genre.   I loved Death as well, and I find his perspective really interesting - I love his take on everything, and how he expresses himself, including his lists. ;D I also think the way he sees in colours is a fantastic device, and for me it really added to the mood of the book.

  I agree entirely - I really like additional media in books and I loved Max's story as well - drawings and text both - I love how it gives extra depth to the story!

  I agree - Death gives you plenty of advance warning on what is about to happen, but it is still really shocking and devastating when it does! [act]hugs[/act] To me that really demonstrated Markus Zusak's skill as a writer - he tells you what's going to happen but you keep reading because you want to know how it all happens - and then it really hits you when it does! Actually, I think his style of writing is one of my favourite aspects of the book!

  I finished it. The ending was so sad! I mean I know, it's WWII, lots of people died on all sides and it was horrible in all ways, but still!
  
  I love the idea about how Hitler started a war on just words, and the story about the word trees.
  
  The extra media in there was absolutely gorgeous. Max's pictures of himself as a bird were so cute!
  
  I loved Death narrating it. He has a really interesting spin, and as you guys said he gives so much away but you still care when it happens. It's interesting comparing Death telling you that Rudy will die and if someone else had told you that Rudy will die. If someone else told me I'd be all annoyed that they ruined the book for me, but Death doing it chapters and chapters before didn't matter.
  
  I hated it when Death mentioned the people dying in the showers in concentration camps. It's something we all know happened, but just the way he said it really grabbed me. It was such a strange idea as well that Death didn't like the way the Nazis had just killed all these people. It's not something you normally think about, even in books where Death is a character (Terry Pratchett's Discworld for instance), that even Death thinks it was a hugely senseless act. I loved his discussion about how everyone thinks Death would like wars. And his sentence about how he holds people in his fingers, but he cradles children in his arms :"(

  so things were a little chaotic in Jan and well most of this year, so I'm a little behind on my reading....
  
  I just finished this book, and all I can say right now is-
  wow. that book hurt.
  
  I feel completely heartbroken for Liesel, I think the deaths of Rudy and Papa hurt the most. Though I was bawling last night when Papa was sent away after giving the Jewish man some bread, thinking that was it. I loved Papa, I thought him such a beautiful character, I loved his patience and just how beautiful his heart is.
  
  I got the sense of Mama's character early on, I took her to be the sort of character she turned out to be - hiding her love behind a tough exterior. I really quite like and was amused by her and Frau Holtzkapf (meh you know who I'm referring to!) their slurs on each other were almost comical terms of endearment.
  Michael killing himself hurt too. I hated that Mr Steiner came home to noone, that he didn't die with his family, I'd somehow forgotten he wsn't with them. but I do like how the few surviving characters of Himmel St kind of became their own little collection of lost survivors.
  
  Liesels strength amazes me - her fighting against and defying the soldiers to get to Max was just so admirable
  
  I loved death, I loved how the book was narrated, I love his POV. I think the thing I love about him so much is that he's telling Liesels story - that this little girl was noticed, her actions had an impact on the world and he noticed.
  
  I looking forward to getting my hands on The Messenger to read more of Markus Zusak's work - I really like his style of writing :)
  
  anyways, its 3am and thats the 2nd night in a row I've stayed up late reading TBT and bawling my eyes out ::) I need to go find proper tissues now since my eyes and nose hurt from a combo of sleeves and paper towel ~:|
  
  edit: also - strange sense of surrealness coming back to reality after reading it - I think I feel the same way whenever I read Anne Frank's Diary - puts alot of things back into perspective really :-/

  Oh welll I know this book was from ages ago but seems Eilidh just finished it and I have read it (albeit a year or so ago) I thought I might contribute - I think that it was really interesting the way that knowing Rudy was going to die well before it happened really intensified what you felt for him the chapters leading up to the end. all the moments with liesl where she wouldn't let him kiss him and then was silently wishing he did were so sweet - but bittersweet! I just wanted to yell at her to go for it! :"(
  
  Also, I know a couple of you guys mentioned the additional media stuff that was inserted in - I loved that the simplicity of delivery of the stories that Max wrote made them that much more profound. Also, like you guys said, the idea that words are powerful enough to sway a nation and that all Liesl and Max had to counter them were their own words, was really cool :roll:
  
  It is really telling that I can actually remember this much when I think it has been at least a year since I last read it...it makes me want to get it out again :-"

  I just finished this book and I thought it was brilliant. Devestating definately, but brilliant. I really enjoyed Zusak's style of writing, and like many have already said, Death as narrator worked really well for me. In some respects, I dislike reading books like this because you just know that the ending's going to be awful and there will be tears aplenty. While I was reading, I was constantly tense, and consequently have an aching back!
  
  I was so glad when Max survived. I was kind of hoping that him and Liesel would get married, but I don't think this was what their relationship was made for.
  
  Michael's suicide was awful. I know it's only human, but I wish guilt wasn't one of the feelings that people experience when they're randomly spared a fate as awful as that of their companions. It horrifies me that a person can survive so much, only to take their own life. I know I'm definately not an authority on, pretty much every area under the sun, and I obviously haven't been through anything like WWII, but I wish Michael and his mum (I can't remember her name, and I couldn't spell it even if I could) had united and supported each other in their grief. But as I said, I probably have no idea what they went through and definately shouldn't be judging.

  I think this book just grabs you from the beginning - I remember my eyes widening with intrigue from the first few lines - such that knowing part of the end doesn't matter or distract from it.
  A lot of people said that the so sad - I agree. Given the basic story - WWII, younge girl makes friends with a Jew - one would think that Max would not survive, and that Papa would quietly and brilliantly do the difficult job of consoling Liesel. The actual end is what makes it so sad yet beautiful. Death tells us that people will die, but the point is how these people (Rudy, Papa Mama etc) influence Liesel's life, leaving her immensely sad at their deaths but wonderfully strong enough to cope. Rather than Max dying, he survives, and Liesel can have joy again.
  I loved how Death was so honest and thoughtful. For me, his view made the book because it made the story something about which someone cares; like Death is telling us because he cares and thinks we should hear the story, rather than the author just giving any old sad story.

  I cried when I finished this book. It was refreshing to read about what it was like for Liesel, as an ordinary German and a child.

  Sorry to drag up an old thread, but the Book Thief Movie trailer is going to be released at around 2:30 tomorrow morning, which is super exciting!! The movie is to be released (in the US at least) on November 15th, and hopefully we'll get it soon after that. It starts Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson!

  Truthfully though, I'm a little hesitant about seeing this film. It was such a beautiful novel that I don't particualrly want to see it ruined.

  That's exactly my feeling too Shonk, but knowing Australian movie distribution, it will be months later....
  
  I know how you feel, it is such a beautiful novel, and I don't want it ruined either, but I don't think it will be (I hope it isn't). I think when the trailer is revealed, it will give us a sense of what it will be like, and hopefully will allay some fears.

  mmmm, I don't know. I daresay the movie will be quite a moving rendition of Nazi Germany, but that's not all that made the book so special. How can they possibly capture the beauty of Zusak's language in film? I don't think I can watch it.

  Because they are still using it. The film is being narrated as the book was--hence why I want to know who Death is [act]grumbles[/act].
  
  I'm still skeptical myself, but I always end up seeing these things anyway, and besides, there are things books can do that films cannot but on the ame page there are things films can do that books can't. They are both amazing forms of expression, and being something who is visually minded, I love seeing some of the stuff that gets done in films.

  I agree Shonl the two media each have strengths, and I love seeing the worlds being visualized. There are rumors that Zusak himself is narrating as Death which would be perfect!

  I finally got around to reading this just recently, and while I simply adored it, watching the trailer all I could think was "everybody looks wrong!" :(
  
  Still, it will be interesting to see who is "playing" death, and whether they give him (or her???) a physical/visible body?

  I finally, finally finished reading it last night. For two-three nights in a row I went to bed with tears reading it. It was kind of unexpected, because for me it was a little slow to get into, and I didn't even realise when it was that I was finally caught up in the story, the characters and was invested in what was happening. I can't describe it but I feel like it was incredibly subtly written, because it really did take me by surprise - when it hit me I was at the part with Hans and the bread, and suddenly I was crying... then sobbing as more and more happen.
  
  It's gotta be one of my favourites because I don't think I've read a book that has affected me as much and unexpectedly as this one has. Zusak has a quiet simplicity in his writing that slowly seems to lure you into the trap. At the same time, calling it 'simplicity' doesn't quite capture or describe just how beautifully written and told the story is!
  
  I saw the trailer before reading and finishing the book, but couldn't get much of it. I then read the book and re-watched the trailer, and I can't help but be a little disappointed and wonder if they can actually pull it off. It's such a unique book. I did see the trailer before, but I can totally see Geoffrey Rush played by Geoffrey Rush - he'll do it so well. The description about the lines in his face and being like an accordion makes my chest tighten (knowing what happens to Hans). Liesel doesn't look like I imagined, nor does Rudy! Ahh Jesse Owens! :'( I'm not sure Death narrating on screen is going to work, I don't think I would want a physical form of Death, but then I'm not sure how else they would do him.

  So what did everyone think of the movie?
  
  I still really liked the movie and cried and nearly sobbed aloud so many times. Sometimes in anticipation of horrible things to come.
  
  I loved Geoffrey Rush as Hans, just because he was very Hans-like in his fatherly good-natured-ness. I loved all the actors and actresses put to play the characters and I think they all acted beautifully and tried their best to do the characters justice.
  
  They cut out a lot but I felt they cut out bits that were integral to the story, which I wasn't impressed by. I don't think they did a great job at portraying Death as the narrator, except a few very brief snippets of him talking and then maybe one or two shots of him in shadow... This of course falls into the category of the book IS better than the movie.

  I thought it was pretty good, obviously not perfect, and obviously heaps cut out of course. The cast did a great job!
  I certainly didn't really like Death as the narrator, the tone was off, his voice was off and it just didn't work.
