Yes! The freckles don't work for me either and it makes me so guilty that I'm sort of chucking out IC's description, but I just can't picture it. :-/
I see him with freckles in the first book, but generally imagine that, by the time the Farseekers opened, he's grown out of them.
But I still see him as blonde, and sort of burly, but not fat. I think I mentioned this in one of the Movie Ideas threads, but I see him as the sort of guy who would cut a nice suit. Like James Bond, only not quite so... overdramatic. Tall, broad, square shoulders, short blonde hair, and pale enough that he could have had freckles when he was younger.
Dameon, in my mind was always thin, tall and with sorta dark hair. I had someone at my school who I always imagined as Dameon and surprisingly his name is Damon.
Damon has dark hair and, like my imagined Dameon, doesnt have freckles or pale skin.
About Dameon's blindness, I think he was born with it, otherwise I dont think he would accept it as much.
Yea like ama, i kind of imagined him with freckles in the first book. but then he went to sador and he came back, and i kinda imagined him all grown up.
when i think of his looks, i imagine tall but not at all lanky, mousy brown hair, smiling a lot, electric blue eyes, broad shoulders. i just can't imagine him with red hair and freckles, like some people were saying before. i've got my own picture completely in my mind, and that just confuses me, as it could also fit! lol

!!!!!!!!!
That's like exactly how I described him when Elspeth went crying to him complaining about Rushton and he was like X:-/ "there there... I'm sure he loves.. you.."
Freakkyyyyyyyy!
He looks a bit confused ??? and his nose is crooked but I think he looks alot like Dameon.
Also, about Dameon's blindness. Why doesnt Elspeth coerce Dameon to see the images that she sees? Being blind shouldnt affect that and Elf does it to many others.

Because coercing is an invasion of the mind, and I don't think it would be a kindness because then Dameon would be dependant on her rather than relying on his own sences. Plus it would take a lot of energy.
For future reference, Conrad K, if nobody's posted since you last did, it's better to edit your last post than to post again or the *dpm* (double-post-monster) will come and eat you  the edit button is found on the top right hand corner of your post and looks like a quill hovering over a piece of paper.
Back on topic, I like Jamie Bell as Dameon. He's pretty close to how I imagined him.

Also, if he was born blind or became blind as a young child then his mind wouldn't be able to process the images. There is a lot of learning the brain has to do to cope with the power of sight. Think of the way we see things move in an animation. Each action is made of tiny individual frames, the images seem to move because they change so fast that the differences occur smoothly enough for our brains to think of it as a moving object. If we couldn't pull off that thought process, we'd only see a series of single images.
Someone who spends a significant portion of their life blind has the parts of the brain which complete this process written over. This means that what they understand of what they see is similar to a series of single images. If you show them an object, lets say a fork, from one angle and then rotate it just a couple of degrees to the left, they won't be able to identify it as the same object.
A man who'd had cataracts from the age of four had them removed in adult hood and eventually let the cataracts grow back over and send him blind again because sight was driving him mad.

I'VE FINALLY FIGURED OUT WHAT'S WRONG WITH ME!
Sorry about the caps-lock everyone, but it was necessary. I assure you. It was.
At any rate, I figured out what my problem is. I've just managed to mix up Matthew and Dameon's descriptions in my head! I've had them backwards this whole time. See, I've always seen Matthew with pale brown hair and freckles and Dameon with dark hair and eyes (which doesn't exclude freckles, but makes it unlikely), but in the book, Matthew's supposed to have dark hair and eyes and Dameon's supposed to have freckles.
[act]facepalms[/act] Well, so far as I'm concerned, it's too late to go back, but I am glad that I now know what my problem is :)
Ahh that's interesting, my thoughts on how they both look align more with yours Sian. Well at least we know Dameon is the blind one.
I am sorry to all the Dameon lovers out there but I always pictured him as tall, skinny, light hair, freckles and a big nose- and not particularly attractive- that is just how he is in my head

Hahah I love reading that other people thought of him as freckly with red hair as well - but I don't think it ever mentions him like that in the books?!
I think my idea of him has shifted over the years (thanks to being surrounded by Dameonites :P) and I do think that Sterling Night picture is a good one, although I picture Dameon has having more a sort of quite presence about him - that he doesn't draw attention, but he still radiates :-/ hard to explain.
[act]Wanders over in very fan-girly mood.[/act]
I've unfortunately spent the last couple of years eradicating from my mind the image of Dameon as looking very similar to my major highschool crush of the same time in which I was reading O-Chron (some coincidence, huh? :S ). i.e. naturally tanned skin, medium brown hair, blue eyes. Very hot... (note: that statement may be biased. Just maybe.)
Anyway. Revised image of Dameon travels something along the lines of dark blonde hair, fair but not pale skin, a beautiful smattering of freckles (though less of them as he gets older), milky white eyes that were once blue (of some shade - sometimes I think ice blue, others times a nice deep blue - certainly something striking). Always slender but with a subtle, wiry strength (increasing as he grows up/'fills out' =P).
As for the blindness debate, I think he must have become blind later in life. There are a few things going for this. Of course, there is the suggestion that he probably wouldn't be accepted if he was born blind, but then again, you can counter it with several points about being born into privilege, it's a disability experienced in the Beforetime rather than a mutation etc. Anyway, that's been covered already. My main reasons for believing he was born sighted are
1. It is often noted that people (e.g. Fian in Ashling, and others...) describe scenes to him. If he had been born blind, there'd be no point in doing this, because he wouldn't understand at all what you meant. And I doubt he would be so painfully polite as to constantly let people ramble on describing these scenes to him if he didn't get it.
2. White-blind eyes do not occur very often from birth. Actually, I gather they're really not common at all. What on earth do I know about it? Well, it is a fact that every once in a while, I decide, at some time past midnight, that rather than sleeping, it would be a much better idea to start researching causes for why Dameon might be blind. Using that little quote that mentions 'milky' eyes [i], it narrows down the options a lot. There really just aren't that many causes of blindness that
result in white eyes, and the phenomenon is virtually non-existent in from-birth issues.
So far, my favourite theories for causes are cataracts, or some form of whitestick poisoning. Cataracts, because they fit the profile of later in life, an actually cause a milkyness to the eyes. As for the whitestick, I figure it's a reasonable possibility, and we have no idea what effects it can have - but there is a reference to whitestick causing blindness in The Farseekers (if anyone's interested, I can easy find a page number - just too lazy right now to reach over to the shelf...), where Jik is talking about some of the testing the priests do, where they tested on a man, who went blind, then insane - and then Jik thinks he died. Obviously our darling Dameon didn't die, but a shorter or less potent exposure could surely enact the first side-effect, without causing death or long-term taint poisoning. I also have a wild theory about councilmen allowing their children to be experimented on by Herders as part of a goodwill bargain, but perhaps this is not the time...
One more point I wanted to make... it doesn't really matter, but someone up above said about how his father may have sent him to a councilfarm as a kinder alternative to allowing him to be burnt. I just wanted to put in a reminder that Dameon was declared misfit after his father died, by his cousin, who was then able to inherit his lands/title/etc. Which suggests that his father is supportive, but again, not the time/place.
Oh yes, and MK, you're having such a Dameon moment with that last sentence: you seem to feel you're not quite explaining it properly, but that's a 'curiously apt' description you have going there (well, I don't think it's curious at all, really, just spot-on).
Anyway, I could theorise about Dameon all night, but that's my 2 (x10) cents for here & now!
kelda... I reckon that is a very good likeness. Nice finding, i like it.
I would agree to the notion that Dameon's freckles have backed off a little since Obernewtyn, mostly because, unlike Ceirwan's 'compassionate dark blue eyes', they have never been mentioned since.
Anyway, i should be asleep right now, but I was just reading through a scene in TKP (which any self-respecting Dameonite knows - it's where Dameon greets Elspeth at the councilcourt after the cul-de-sac fiasco, i.e. the first time he atually puts in an appearance in TKP at all), and I found a good hint at to his height.
'Unabe to speak, I moved into his waiting embrace.'
[act]squess[/act]
' "I am so very glad to see you," I sighed, my mouth against the rough linen of his shirt collar.'
TKP, end of chapter 27, pg 594.
I promise I'm not just putting this up because I'm fangirling... though I'm doing that as well. Point in, as a professional Hug Monster, I can tell you that, based on the information that, in a hug (or 'embrace', if you will), Elspeth's mouth is on the same level as Dameon's collar, factoring in the fact that she'll be pressing her head downwards into his shoulder to achieve this, and assuming he has the top button or two of his shirt shirt undone...
Dameon is probably around 2-3 inches taller than our already 'tall' Elspeth.**
Elementary, my dear Watson.
**Assuming, again, that he is not leaning down towards her for the hug, which would add to his height. I'm guessing not though, as Elspeth is already meant to be tall, and he's only ever been described at tall, not a veritable giant.
Yeh. I never imagined him like the description suggested. Certainly not with freckles. I always thought he was blonde with milky blue eyes, tall and broad shouldered but lacking in 'masculine' stature (that is to say - slightly soft) and pale skin. And truthfully I always imagine him with short hair. Weird how our imagination takes us into different directions.
Oh hey look, it's past midnight and I'm feeling fangirly again!
Interesting RedQueen that you say you imagined him as 'soft' - after that's exactly how Elspeth admits to seeing him for most of the time she's known him! (In The Sending!)
I always thought he was kind of lanky and awkward looking. Kelda and Tonks' images capture how I imagine Dameon. I think some people have made him a bit overly attractive in their heads. Maybe its a fangirl thing to do with a character you really like. I tend to associate freckles with some kind of ginger hair, which seems to be how a lot of people have Dameon, but I wouldn't say it would be strongly orange or red as that would likely be in Obernewtyn as a striking feature that Elspeth first notices.
As for the eyes, I have difficulty in general with fixing the details of a face in my imagination, so I've never really thought of his eyecolour. I tend to imagine Dameon looking down or with closed/half-closed eyes like he is thinking, probably because he comes across as so err...thoughtful.
I think I've said this in other threads concerning Dameon's looks, but when I originally read obernewtyn I got Dameon and Matthews descriptions mixed up, so for a long time Dameon looked like Matthew and Matthew looked like Dameon :P
I spent quite awhile going through the books and pulling out every physical description I could find thouhg, so my mental image of Dameon now adheres pretty close to the canon. I do, however, still imagine him with dark brown hair.
But otherwise, he's tall, freckled and, by the Sending, well muscled, but the swift caution that his blindness gives his movements makes him generally appear gentle despite his build.
His eyes have been described several different ways in the books, so I think even IC forgot what they looked like exactly, since they apparently got milky over the course of the series. Accordingly though, I just imagine him as having quite light coloured eyes.
And I don't really see him as attractive or unattractive . . . he's just a guy.
I might do a quick draw of how I see him someday... Anyone wanna view when and if I finish?
Sure--we've also got galleries here that you can post it in too, if you like :)
