Chapter 3

"Your owner has not arrived and you yearn for freedom," Ana stated grandly. To the miserable dog's surprise she began jangling the rusty, heavy chains that bound Finlay from his desired freedom, frantically searching for a broken link, a weak dented part, anything to help Finlay to his freedom.
"Aaargh!" Ana cried, dropping the chains in frustration. She asked the now concerned dog if he could sense his owner. He said he caught a faint scent, but his ownwer was not coming so it was probably not him.
"How do I help you?" Ana sent, her fierce eyes melting into sadness and brimming with tears. She had lost so much, she did not want to lose Finlay as well, her only friend, her only guide to help her around this unfamiliar world. Again, she picked up the ruthless chains, kicking them, shaking them, pulling them, doing all sorts of useless things that she knew would not help her.
"Friend must not worry, Finlay will be happy with his master," Finlay sent consolingly.

"You will not be hap-" Suddenly a strong, clammy hand clamped over Ana's mouth and another grasped her by the stomach, knocking the wind out of her as she was dragged roughly to something like a ditch. She glanced fearfully sideways and to her utmost horror, saw Finlay being pulled roughly by his chain, being half strangled as he was dumped beside her, whimpering with pain.
"Tie them up, and keep watch you piece of vermin," a harsh voice rasped, "We must not disappoint him."
Disappoint who? Ana thought, weary and forlorn.

Minutes ticked by, slowly turning into hours as Ana looked into the sky, straight at the shadowed moon which looked like a strict, bossy lady glowering down at her with endless contempt. She realised that as she was tied to Finlay, she could speak to him and give him some company. She felt guilty that because of her he was suffering, she had talked to him in the first place, then tried to set him free and doing nothing useful to achieve it.

"Friend did everything she could," Finlay sent sleepily, giving Ana quite a shock and she looked up to the glowering moon again.
