  I couldn't think where to put this so I just created another thread:
  
  The stone sword elspeth gets at the end of TSK well I think it's the sword she sees Swallow saluting her with in her dream that she has when she gets hurt during the battle games.
  
  As to why he is saluting her I'm not sure but maybe with her presenting him the sword it fulfils a prophecy and with that he is able to name her as she really is (ie her objective) to his people and that they are then able to help her. I know she cannot speak about her mission but could swallow? Is there anything in the oberchrons that provides an argument against him doing this?

  Not as far as I know, I actually thought that too about the saluting with the sword thing but now I'm not too sure, because wouldn't Elspeth have mentioned it when
  1) She first had the vision, wouldn't she have noticed that it was stone, and if not....
  2)..... it surely would have been noted by her when she received the stone sword.
  
  But I think that may just have been an author thing, it could very well be the sword.

  Hmm but it has been a while and I'm sure Elspeth forgets like the rest of us. And she was in alot of pain if I remember correctly so things may be a bit hazy. Did she not almost give into the dream river? I think near death may have preoccupied her a bit.

  I don't really remember the circumstances if I'm honest, only the vision. In which Garth told Elspeth she was really a gypsy... she could have forgotten, but that's infuriating.

  I don't think she forgot, she is just naturally closed mouthed because of all the secrets she has to keep. She does try to talk to Swallow [act]swoon[/act] about her quest but he always puts her off till the right time. He knows she is the one to do whatever it is the gypsies have kept secret but he won't give her any information at all. I think that the ancient promises are one of the passwords to the sentinal compound and the metal strip on the sword is an access card of some kind. I think she will use these two passwords/keys, hand Swallow the sword, he will salute her with it as a farewell/goodluck kind of wave, then she enter the compound with the rest of the keys alone with Maruman.
  
  I doubt if the sword has any value as a weapon, but it will be made by Cassie and therefore hold great value among the gypsies.

  I once suggested that the weird symbols/writing on the sword and on the laptop might be Chinese, because there were three main languages - Urolish, Gadi and Chinanka. Elspeth recognises urolish and Gadi. Also, I think Elspeth will have to visit the old Chinon empire at some stage to keep the balance (ie each major power may have some control of the deathmachines). Perhaps the cost of getting the laptop was the loss of Kasanda's Tiban lover?

  I've heard various speculation about the stone key in other threads but since this one exists I thought I'd ressurect it.
  
  I was rereading TKP and had a strange idea. It says several times that
  

  She [the Red Queen] will return to claim her throne bearing the lost staff of the Red Queens and that will be the sign for us to rise against the slavemasters

  
  While not exactly a staff, I'm wondering if this refers to the stone kay Elspeth was given by the Sadorian overguardian. Although it is assumed that it was lost when Dragon's mother died, it is possible that it eas actually taken with Kasanda when she left the first Red Queen.
  
  Since we have, as yet, seen no sign of the real staff (although it would be fitting for Matthew to find it) it would fulfill both prophesis at the same time.
  
  On a slightly different track, if we assume that it ws lost with Dragon's mother, it could also be somehow used to control the Entina. It was only after the Gadfian slavers gained control that the Entina was 'awakened'.

  I think the stone sword is a copy Cassandra makes, knowing that the original will be lost at sea and that Dragon will need it to rally her people and also open Cassy's husband's grave where another sign is stored.
