Well, I was snooping around the theories archives when I noticed that there wasn't a thread on the monster of the Red Queen's Land. (If I am wrong, please inform me) Which was suprising, since it's so covered in mysery that it should have a thread. (adding to my suspicion that there is one out there)
Well, I'm going to be blunt and just say it. (forgot the name of the monster unfortunately)
It sounds suspiciosly like a machine, or specifically, a weapon machine, what with it's whirring and no emotions. And, I think that it gusrds the entrance to the BOT that started the great white. After all, Elspeth is traveling to the RQL in the sending and there is so much that can happn in one book. Also, it is too suspicios to be left alone.
Please tell me what you think.
EDIT: I have now been informed that that this theory is so common it's basically set in stone. And also, that the monster's name is Entina.
The monster is the Entina.
There has been some talk about it and how it may be the Sentinel.
But it will be good to have a thread on this :)
Oh yeah ~:|...I did search but I couldn't really find it and couldn't remember the name...oh well. I feel dumb now.
Anyways, then I will make this a thread about WHAT is entina. We have a few theories here and there, but what actualy is it? The entrance to the weaponmachines, but how does it kidnap and kill those in its clutches? I want to hear more specific theories...
I have some theories about the Entina itself:
1] It could be a machine that feeds of human blood / energy. You know like in The War of the Worlds movie- the Martians were using humans and spitting out things like entrails).
2] It could be a living monster, but I HIGHLY doubt it. As far as we know, there have been no reported new species in the whole of the Obernewtyn books - aside from small leaps in evolution like the bugs that feed off radioactive waste, any change in larger species would be very incremental. Even amongst humans, the only noticeable changes have been in the brains and that is it. I don't think there is a new beast that has never been heard of before and that is indescribable that would cause such terror. Even if it is some mutant form of a current animal, I still doubt it would be so terrifying that it needs to eat humans to survive -- It could be a Lion. But seriously, lions??? They could be tamed or maybe beastspoken to. or killed by desperate enough humans.
3] My third theory is that the Entina itself is some sort of radioactive machine. It is VERY radioactive, which is why people cannot stand to be near it, because they get destroyed.
4] It is a portal to the Moon. If people walk into it, they get cyrogencially frozen and get beamed up! Or stored down deep in some sort of crypt.
5] It is a machine that messes with people's minds.

I like the point about it probably not being a larger/mutant animal we don't know of. The only thought I have for that is that the Agyllians are kind of special (and large) so there is *some* possibility that the entina is a larger genetically modified beast of some kind but that Agyllians are special in their own right and for all we know their size isn't of any signifigance because it was the brains of the birds that was special. However I guess the largest detractor in that line of thought is that we only know of one 'Entina' which would mean it would be very old if it has no breeding companions :P. Overall good reasoning for it not being an animal.
I think I'm going to stick to my en-teen-a (antenna) theory for now. Has Isobelle ever said the word Entina that we know of in any of the interviews?

I always got the impression that once people were sent to the entina pit, they were sort of picked off rather than killed or 'killed' all at once because they said they were sent down there to work, rather than sent to die. Its not all that different, but different none the less, I don't think the slavers would have any reason to lie about wanting to kill the people. This tells me that the entina, or at least part of the entina, needs to be mobile because if you needed to walk right up to it, the prisoners would eventually figure out not to walk down a particular path when enough people didn't come back.

Thanks Arwen! So it goes back to what was said in those theories of Min and emi I linked to above saying Sentinel=Entina...well at least that's what I gather from IC's comment :P.
I think it's interesting, when you look at the actual words, ENTINA could almost be a part of SENTINEL. You just swap the 'a' with an 'e'. I definitely think that it either is sentinel or is certainly related to it. plus it's in TLORQ, and we know how much of importance is going down there....
How could "entina" not be intended as a corruption of "sentinel"? Until I saw this thread it didn't occur to me that it could be anything else. Then in The Stone Key we have confirmation that a large underground building could be controlled by a computer, and also indication that if a beforetime (super) computer was left on but unattended for too long it could go a bit crazy...
Going on the theory that 'entina' is sentinel, is it possible that people die in the 'pit' because BOT might register their fear or anger at slavemasters/being sent there as a threat and kills them?
