I would be really angry if something bad didn't happen to Elf because it would be so fake. You know how in HP&DH Harry dies but comes back to life? Perhaps something like that happens.
OR...She would have to sacrifice her powers and become a commoner??? I think id Elf destroys the weapponmachines and kills the destroyer then she will have to sacfrifice something, perhaps her own life. Because she can't just be like" oh, bang bang you're dead let's all live happily ever after".
I know that's kind of pessimistic but it's what is more realistic
I think that Elspeth wont die but she might have to sacrafice a loved one, i think rushton might go with her and die, but on the question is she immortal i think she is like Claire from heroes, she will always heal, but if you cut of her head that would be it.
I agree withArien!
I think shes a mortal whos body heals while she sleeps. x_X
I think that if she were to be struck fataly, she would die! :|
well shes definitely mortal, just think of the Agyllains, theyre mortal, they bestowed her the power to heal but they all grow all and die. I doubt the power given her will prevent that however it may mean she can withstand the blacklands for enough time to accomplish her task whereas otherwise she wouldnt have. just a thought

Someone asked if Elspeth can die of old age, and I think she can. This is why;
When we heal an injury, what our body is doing is on a multicellular level, it is building and putting in place the cells which are required to heal the injury.
Ageing on the other hand, is something very different. Each time your cells split, a little bit of the dna off the ends is not reproduced. We all have a lot of junk dna at the ends so our dna is not damaged right away, but as we get older we run out of the junk dna and then some of the genes start to get lost off the end. This means that the cells aren't built properly and hence we age. (Please note, here I'm talking about the ageing of people who have already reached maturity, the 'children growing' part is different again)
Elspeth's mind was taught to heal itself and I take it this means that she has greater control over the systems that tell her cells where and when to build in order to repair herself, also the production of t cells and recognition of viruses in her immune system. However, messages from the brain are sent to her body via cells and hormones. You can stimulate a cell to split, but you can't tell the insides of the cell to rearrange themselves, thus you can't add extra junk dna to the ends, thus you can't prevent ageing.
Scientists are looking at ways to add junk dna, but this would most likely be done with a virus, you can't teach the body to add junk dna, I just can't see that working.
On a different note, I can totally see Elspeth never having to go through menopause. I wonder what that would do to the story....
So yes, that's my two cents.
She has to be able to die but her body/ mind can work so fast that the injury is no longer as fatal as it was.
I know this thread hasn't been touched in awhile but any way...
I've always thought that Elf is immortal from from any physical wound except maybe decapitation. Back to the knife in Guarnette, I always thought it cut her and not stabbed or hit with the hilt. I agree that she's mainly asleep when her body heals because it takes up all her energy because in TSK When Malik has her she says she can't remove her demon band because her body was using the energy to heal herself.
But reading Sians i would also believe that her life would be abruptly cut short because she didn't have enough junk to keep her body working
You know, at the end of the story, after she saves evryone and leads the animals to freedon, I reckon Elspeth might die, but the rest continue her story, so it'll be like:
Elspeth dies.
Chapter 30(or something)
Rushton watches her fall, knowing that Elspeth's destiny has been fulfilled.
Or maybe there is a story Elspeth reads about her dying, and in knowing that she gets really cautious, until someone tells her that she makes her own destiny!
I agree with Moondream, that would be a really good ending! That she finally leads the animals to freedom!
She isn't immortal. If she chooses to go into the mindstream she would die. If she had a really really really bad injury she would probably not recover.

I think she's immortal as long as the weaponmachines are active, after that she might be able to die
EDIT
The Agyllians seem to be quite single minded, so I don't think she will have her fast healing more then necessary. Also the Agyllians will probably keep her alive as long as needed and then she'll be on her own I think.
i don't think she should be immortal because that way it would be to easy to destroy the weapon machines and it would be much of a challenge. Besides how would she become immortal?
She definetely isn't immortal. I've been rereading Ashling and at the end when she almost dies Atthis said that she would only heal if she went back and live. Elspeth could have just continued to the mindstream and died if Atthis didn't tell her to go back.

Elf is not immortal, decapitation (unlerss she could grow a new head), burning at the stake, falling into the mind stream, many many more things i wont say on a pg message board could kill her
It would be interesting if she was immortal, because then there is less of a challenge. One of the things shown in the quest is that their is a lot of risk, and not just to Elspeth. It probably seems to people at Obernewtyn that she is immortal, as she always survives, no matter what, and no matter who else is hurt. It is better since she is not immortal, because it shows she has to risk herself. If she was to be killed, I think it would either be her killing herself after destroying the machines ( don't know why she would yet ) or someone hurts her while her body is trying to heal her of another injury, because then she would be weaker and easier to kill. She isn't immortal, but if she was immortal and everything was to be destroyed by the great white, how could she survive if everything is destroyed? Maybe she would get used to the Blacklands and find a way to survive.
Definitely not immortal. She wouldn't need Swallow to save her all those times if she was. Very fast healer, yes. Immortal, no.
