I just love the books and was inspired by recently seeing a movie trailer to make a thread... I will start off...
"you sass that hoopy ford prefect, there's a frood who really knows where his towle is.'
'it was simply a day for screaming at inanimate objects'
hehehehehehe great book, anyone else read/like it?
Zaphod: look i'm up to here with cool ok? i'm so amazingly cool you could keep a side of meat in me for a month, I am so hip I have difficulties seeing over my pelvis
well strictly speaking not a hitchhikers quote but:
Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.
Douglas Adams
i dont have the book with me, but the digital watches bit is pretty funny:D
ah yes
"these ape descendant creatures are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea."
"if theres something more important than my ego around i want it caught and shot now" - zaphod
Arthur felt happy. He was terribly pleased that the day was for once working out so much according to plan. Only 20 minutes ago he had decided he would go mad, and now here he was already chasing a Chesterfield sofa across the fields of prehistoric earth.
"I went mad for a while. Did me worlds of good" - Ford
I don't have the book with me though so that's from memory and probably wrong...
Cat
hehe...the fifth book in the trilogy of four.....love it
havent read it in ages tho
The knack of flying is learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.
--Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
You barbarians! I'll sue the council for every penny it's got! I'l have you hung, drawn, and quartered! And whipped! And boiled...until...until...until you've had enough. And then I will do it again! And when I've finished I will take all the little bits, and I will JUMP on them! And I will carry on jumping on them until I get blisters, or I can think of anything even more unpleasant to do...
--Arthur Dent
One of the things Ford Prefect had always found hardest to understand about humans was their habit of continuously stating and repeating the very very obvious, as in It's a nice day, or You're very tall, or Oh dear you seem to have fallen down a thirty-foot well, are you all right?
--The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Arthur: If I asked you where the hell we were, would I regret it?
Ford: We're safe.
Arthur: Oh good.
Ford: We're in a small galley cabin in one of the spaceships of the Vogon Constructor Fleet.
Arthur: Ah, this is obviously some strange use of the word safe that I wasn't previously aware of.

But on of the best is:
Now it is such a bizarrely impossible coincidence that anything so mind-bogglingly useful could have evolved purely by chance that some thinkers have chosen to see it as a final and clinching proof of the nonexistence of God. The arguement goes something like this:
"I refuse to prove that I exist," says God, "for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing."
"But," say Man, "the Babel fish is a dead giveaway, isn't it? It could not have evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you don't. QED."
"Oh dear," says God, "I hadn't though of that" and promply vanishes in a puff of logic.

I just lent the books to my friend so I don't the exact wording but:
"You stopped to pick up hitchhikers? 10 out of 10 for style, but minus several million for good thinking"
-Zaphod
And I love the bit where Ford is explaing about the universe with the bath tub sand thing. And when at the restaurant Zaphod misses something important and it turns out to be drinks.
What the whale thinks while falling was quite good also.
Cat
I hate that movie,so I don't think I'll start on the books.

You should still try the books, they're brilliant and different from the movie! (no love-y thing going on, and no vogon planet)
Cat
At least try the first book Kaylan, and see what you think
ok,I'll try the first book.Just 4 u Cat - Eyes.
humans are always stating the obvious like 'you're very tall' or 'you have a nice dog' or 'you've just fallen of a 10 ft, are you alright?' [img]http://s4.images.proboards.com/grin.gif" alt=";D" border="0"/>
lol!
i like that last one... i'd love to use it some time, but i dont think the opotunity will come up...
*makes opportuntiy* i see this is a hitchhikers guide to the galaxy quote thread...
Indeed, and while we're at it, GO CHECK YOUR PMs MIKY! I need to know if you still want to play Mafia [img]http://s4.images.proboards.com/grin.gif" alt=";D" border="0"/>
I love the POV gun in the movie "It won't work on me, I'm already a woman"
Cat
My favourite's: (don't have the book so might not be right)
Ford: It's a little like being drunk.
Arthur: What's so bad about being drunk?
Ford: Ask a glass of water.
I don't wait for an opportunity, I just quote it at random intervals [img]http://s4.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif" alt=":P" border="0"/>
I love the opening lines to Restaurant (I think it's Restaurant...)
The one that says something along the lines of (don't have book so exucse wording [img]http://s4.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif" alt=":P" border="0"/>)
In the beginning the universe was created. This has made a lot of people unhappy and has generally been looked upon as a bad move.
Cat
Ok, so I've only read the first book, and seen the movie. (don't worry, my friend's buying me the rest for christmas [img]http://s4.images.proboards.com/grin.gif" alt=";D" border="0"/>) But I love the whole "god vanishes in a puff of logic" bit. Had me in stitchers I was laughing so hard, and I'm so glad that they put it on the extras on the dvd.
Ok, I have a quote from the movie that I liked (and it's about the only thing I can remember right now)
Authur: "Ford?"
Ford: "Yeah?"
Authur: "I think I'm a sofa."
Both: "ARRGGGHHH!"
Oh, and the whale as it's falling towards the ground.
Whale: "Hello ground! I wonder if it'll be my friend?"
"Strangly enough, the only thing going through the mind of the bowl of petunias was 'Not again'."
Meh, done from memory, so excuse any mistakes.
Ahhh yes, the petunias... They really were insane, you'll find out in later books.
