Congrats Kieran. Here is my theory:
Maryon will play a part in Elspeth’s quest by foreseeing a key event, namely Dragon and her whereabouts. Maryon will reveal when Dragon can be found at a certain place, allowing Elspeth the slight chance of finding her before heading of to Land of the Red Queen, where she needs Dragon to show her something that she has forgotten about her past.
Gevan will be the one who will run Obernewtyn in Rushton and Elspeth’s absence when they are in LotRQ. When Elspeth returns, he and Alad will take her down to the farms, where Elspeth will find Darga waiting for her to accompany her on her quest. This will mean that Gevan will be one of the ones who will trigger the events which include Elspeth’s leaving with Darga, Galtha and Maruman.
Garth will present Elspeth with a document about Sentinel’s location because he knows her fascination with that particular aspect of the Beforetime. The document isn’t a map, but it is a journal entry by one of the people who worked at Sentinel, and contains his thoughts on the journey to get there. Garth will press Elspeth for details, and she will simply ask about where he believes the complex is located, and he’ll comply with her request, at the same time as pursuing more information about the topic in his research.
Dameon will be the one person Elspeth confides in before she leaves for the final part of her quest. He will say that he has known a long time, but was waiting for when she would share with him about it, and then he will give to her the key she believed to have gone into the Blacklands with Jacob Obernewtyn before he died, which had been supposed to lie with him and Hannah when they died together. Dameon shall explain that his father had given it to him before he died, without an explanation other than that a cat had left it in his room, with a letter from the Beforetime. Elspeth realises the cat must have been Maruman, for who else would venture into the Blacklands, and the letter was from the first D’rekta, Cassy, who gave it to the girl Elspeth saw on the Dreamtrails with Merimyn. The girl had journeyed to the mountains in search of Hannah, and had come across something, or foreseen sometime when a letter would be needed, and so she gave the letter to Merimyn before he found Elspeth and became Maruman.

What role will Dameon, Gevan, Maryon and Garth play in Elspeth completing her quest?
Garth will find some maps of the Beforetime and of the area outside the Land, which will help Elf to reach the Red Queen's Land. He will also give her the suit and the journal that were found in Jacob Obernewtyn's grave. It's unclear how he was convinced to part with these items, but Elf suspects that Maryon had a hand in it. :P
Maryon will give Elf a futuretelling that annoys her (as always :P), but it will help Elf to have some idea of what to expect. (Not all of which is good, of course...)
Gevan will teach Elf a neat trick he's worked out for how to more easily coerce group minds - she will then be able to use this on the slavers in the Red Queen's Land, to help her get where she needs to go...
Dameon will be the Destroyer - but it will turn out that the Destroyer isn't actually a bad thing - the Destroyer is actually needed to destroy the weaponmachines after the Seeker finds them. Dameon will do this by accidentally walking into something that turns out to be the button that self-destructs the BOT and Sentinal systems, without actually destroying the world. And I know it seems crazy - I couldn't believe it either! Dameon having an unco moment - who'd have thought it? :P
[ligne][/ligne]Sorry, I had to have a bit of fun with it... I was having trouble working out what role they'd all play, and then I got sidetracked... :P
Due to Daemon's absence in previous books, yet Isobelle's prevailing hints that he is a formidable character, he will have a large role to play in The Sending, the main reason being his close connection to Elspeth's emotions. As we all know, Elspeth will have to deal with her emotional problem at some stage. This could be life-threatening and will happen at a heightened and crucial time in the story, possibly at the time when she is trying to fulfil her prophecy as The Seeker! Because of Daemon's strong emotional bond to Elspeth, he will be the one to save her life as she is destroying herself during a mass release of all her emotions(tied to the dark power), possibly forced by Ariel/Beforetime machines.
Despite Elspeth's (and my own) annoyance at Maryon, she will continue to be a vital key regarding information for Elspeth's final journey. Maryon will be able to inform her what she needs to take on her journey (apart from the obvious keys) and (to an extent) whom. I think some of the characters will come by chance, though. She will get to do all of this just before being kidnapped by Ariel and his cronies to try and prevent Elspeth having any further aid on her journey as The Seeker.
Elspeth's increasing teknoguil characteristics will see a closer relationship formed with Garth, especially considering their obsessions with Hannah and Jakob. He will play a vital role in the location of the graves and will unearth a secret passage to Sentinel (without realising it at the time). Garth will also reveal an essential piece of information regarding the operation of computermachines before Elspeth goes to find Sentinel.
Hi
Arwen, I loved the idea about Dameon and Maruman; it was very creative even though the idea of Maruman as a delivery cat is a little unlikely.
Ziera, it was a little crazy, but it was really interesting to hear a theory that totally twisted the idea that has been created in relation to the destroyer in the books.
Kelsey, your theory was great because each bit had a detailed idea, the idea about Dameon was especially interesting.
So, the winner is: Arwen because it was creative but reasonable. Every one had fascinating ideas about Dameon; however, your idea that had always known but had been waiting for Elspeth to come to him made me think, that is Dameon down to a T; a great story twist but it just fits.
Your up Arwen

Thanks Kieran- it was a great challenge, and I'm glad you liked it.
And so here is the new challenge from my store of ready and obsessive challenges:
Where do Hannah Seraphim and Jacob Obernewtyn's bones lay, and how did they find each other after the Great White?
Have fun with this one, I don't mind if you go a bit crazy, but I think it'll be slightly difficult ;)
Tue Apr 07 2009, 11:55am
Hannah Seraphim and Jacob Obernewtyn originally planned to rest their bones at Obernewtyn, so Jacob built grave plots for them, and the garden maze. At this point in time, Hannah knew that she was being closely scrutinized by Govamen members who were highly suspicious of her activities. While they didn't know of the link between Jacob and Hannah (after all she was Tipodan whilst he was Scottish), they knew that she had connections somewhere in the high mountains. So she didn't risk travelling there in case.
At this point in time, Cassy had made contact with Hannah, and they had established a well working relationship.
Hannah as part of her busy job, travelled constantly, and she was in one of her travels when the Great White struck. Jacob was a wealthy man with many estates and he had Obernewtyn as one of his many properties. He was at Obernewtyn when the Great White struck. He implored Hannah to come live with him with the impending threat of the Great White but she did not reach there in time.
After the Great White occurred, Hannah and Jacob found eachother in a mass refugee camp, located in the Red Queen's land; after Jacob searched far and wide for her using his surviving contacts. As he was wealthy, he managed to travel to the surviving colonies of people (via a plane) and found her at the Red Queens land.
Things turned out different to their original intention. Hannah Seraphim became the first Red Queen, so her bones rested at the Red Queen's land. As her lover, Jacob also travelled to Red Queens land and his resting place was beside Hannah's when he died. When news by gypsy travel reached Obernewtyn, the current occupants raised the graves in their memory. The graves at Obernewtyn marked as Hannah's and Jacob's were there as a testament to those who had built and lived in Obernewtyn.

As Dragon has reverted to her former 'street urchin'/'wild child' self, how will she refine her manners and speaking ability, and learn to act her age in time for her to take her place as the Red Queen? Or is it possible that she won't and will learn on the job?
Thanks Arwen! :D And I personally thought the other entries were fantastic. ;)

I'm sorry Arwen - that was a really good challenge, but I started writing something and then realised it didn't even make sense to myself. ::) Then I had the same problem as Min mentioned, and lost track of time... I really like Mono's theory, though! ;D (And I've learnt my lesson - I will post sooner rather than later so I don't miss the deadline! :P)
As Dragon has reverted to her former 'street urchin'/'wild child' self, how will she refine her manners and speaking ability, and learn to act her age in time for her to take her place as the Red Queen? Or is it possible that she won't and will learn on the job?
Well, I was considering a scenario similar to My Fair Lady or The Princess Diaries :P but I like the idea that she'll learn on the job. Like all young or inexperienced royals, she will have a number of advisers. And before she takes her place as the Red Queen, Dragon will remember enough about her former self to help somewhat, however her speaking ability and manners are deeply ingrained, and will take some time to improve.
She will also have several people whose responsibility is to instruct her in the finer arts of etiquette and diction, however it will take some time. Still, her people will be happy enough to have been rescued from slavery that they will be willing to overlook a few flaws. So she will spend the first few months eating with her hands, and even longer before she will take a proper bath, but what's a little dirt compared to what they've been through? Besides, as Elspeth previously observed, Dragon never smelt bad, and, as it happens, her people will decide to eat with their hands as well so that Dragon does not look to be beneath her people. And although her speaking ability will also take some months to improve, she is always capable of getting her point across, however clumsily it may be worded. Besides, her limited vocabulary will save her from many boring conversations in the early years of her reign.
In many respects, although Dragon seems young, she is also capable of making adult decisions, and standing up for those weaker than herself, as she demonstrated when she tried to save the boy from the Herders in Ashling. Dragon will continue with this trend, as well as demonstrating the ability she told Elspeth about while they were in Dragon's mind - Dragon is willing and able to see the truth of matters, no matter how much it hurts her. It is this that will enable her to take her place as Red Queen and right the wrong that had been in existence since even before the death of her mother.

This started... okay and made some sense, but then I got off track at the end |:|
As Dragon has reverted to her former 'street urchin'/'wild child' self, how will she refine her manners and speaking ability, and learn to act her age in time for her to take her place as the Red Queen? Or is it possible that she won't and will learn on the job?
Dragon has travelled far and arrived at Halfmoon Bay after the Westland was regained by the rebels. Halfmoon Bay is where Elspeth went to from Herder Ilse when she was tracking Ariel/plague, and it happens to be where Rolf, the crippled metalworker who helped Elf lives.
Dragon wonders down the market where Rolf works and he does the same for her he did for Elf, in asking her to buy him a couple of bannocks from Una, a nearby stallholder. Though Dragon is petrified, he befriends her and her home with him. It is at his home that Dragon stays with Mona, Rolf's sister, and Mona helps her the way Katlyn, Brydda's mother had when she first met Dragon.
Dragon slowly allows herself to relax, and is especially charmed by Rolf and Mona's deceased sister Carryn's masks. As the memory of what happened to her when she was taken from her homeland is still fresh, she tells her story, as the masks remind her of something she used to see often when her mother still lived.
In opening herself up and allowing herself to remember, she remembers everything her mother had taught her, and that she must show someone who will come to her homeland the grave marker of the first Red Queen and her brother.
By living with Mona and Rolf she is treated as an adult so she acts as one, behaving as her mother taught her how Queen's do. She remembers her true name, and she begins to dream of the past she had with Elspeth, so when she asks to go back to Obernewtyn, word is sent ahead, but she uses her real name, so nobody knows who she is until she gets there.
She is the reason Elspeth must return to the mountains in haste, and when Elspeth see her she thinks that she is seeing and talking to Dragon's mother at first because of her unexpected eloquence. Dragon will hold herself proudly, and will take Elf to meet with the others from Sador as they started back not too long after Elf. Both Dragon and Elspeth will head back to Sador, and so Dragon fulfills one of the Overguardians prophecies, allowing Rushton's requests for the Sadorian ships to journey to the Land of the Red Queen.

Wow guys this is the first time I had heard about this and I thought I would pop something in but these are all well thought out mine was going to be like, two lines ~:| anyhow I will think of something and post tomorrow!
That's okay bambi - it's not the length that counts, it's the content and theorizing!
*dpm*
It is now that special time of the thread where I announce the results! :D
The winner this time is Zieria! I also think that Dragon will probably be coached into the role by her servants; but she still does have a sense of righteousness instilled in her.
Arwen's was interesting to read - I wouldn't have thought of those characters in that role; but it was still creative :D Congratulations to all the entrants.
so Zieria you're up next! :D

Here's the new challenge:
Explain how Gahltha was actually put in place with the purpose of killing Elspeth before she has a chance to fulfill her destiny. Take into account the fact that he really believes it is his task to help her, and to keep her from harm.
(This one's more for fun - obviously I don't really believe this! Although I 'd like you to put some thought into your theories for this round, feel free to be creative with it as well, even if it comes out being a little crazy! ;D)

Explain how Gahltha was actually put in place with the purpose of killing Elspeth before she has a chance to fulfill her destiny. Take into account the fact that he really believes it is his task to help her, and to keep her from harm.
We know that Galtha was rescued from a fat gypsy family before he was brought to Obernewtyn. But that doesn't explain why he was with that family, or exactly how long he had been with them. He'd been with them for quite some time, many years, but before that he was with Ariel's father. Like Ariel, his father was a cruel man and also had true dreams. He had seen that his son would have something against Elspeth so he tried to help out when he saw Galtha and Elspeth's bond, and how Galtha would travel across the sea to the Land of the Red Queen with Elspeth. Seeing a possibility, he took the young Galtha to a gypsy family he was friendly with, and sold him to them with the condition that in a handful of years, when Galtha was at his best they would take him near to the High Pass, allowing the Misfits to rescue him. The gypsy family had to break him by using water, creating Galtha's fear of water. Galtha doesn't remember Ariel's father, and the Agyllians knew very little about that time, as the Eldar at that time was new. What will happen is when the journey to the Red Queen's Land begins there will be a vicious storm as Ariel's father had seen and Elspeth will go to comfort Galtha who is panicking. Unfortunately Elspeth gets caught by his hoof when he is rearing. This is how Ariel's father's plan goes through as he had true dreamed it, but he didn't see the end result. (let's just say that Ariel's father = Salamander, so he will get a shock when Elspeth arrives at the Land of the Red Queen, alive depsite what he saw)
Ok, I just watched The Long Kiss Goodnight, so this may come across a bit Hollywood :P Also I've lent the books out, so I don't know if my facts are going to be all that reliable...
Explain how Gahltha was actually put in place with the purpose of killing Elspeth before she has a chance to fulfill her destiny. Take into account the fact that he really believes it is his task to help her, and to keep her from harm.
Gahltha hears voices in his head telling him to go save Elspeth - but how do we know who sent him? Elf assumes it's the Agyllians because those are the ones telling her what to do (or so she thinks! Who knows who's talking to her in Maruman's mind) but how do we really know?
Gahltha is, quite clearly, the most fanatical of all the people / animals involved in Elf's quest. No one else gets a complete personality transplant when some random voices decide to tell them to help someone from a race they hate. This may lead some to say he is the most devout and helpful of the people who know about her quest. But are the most devout always the ones who are most helpful?
Let's review:
Herders - mega devout - burn people at stakes for using mint
Rushton - not devout - pretty benign, sometimes makes people do the dishes
Clearly it is the devout ones - the ones in cults who ignore all the "Be nice to people" sections of their religious texts - who are the ones to look out for.

Explain how Gahltha was actually put in place with the purpose of killing Elspeth before she has a chance to fulfill her destiny. Take into account the fact that he really believes it is his task to help her, and to keep her from harm.
Gahltha didn't start out as a friendly critter as we all know. He hates humans with a passion and was looking for a way to get away from them all. His mind was found by Miryum who is known as a coercer but also has beastspeaking/coercing abilities which she has kept hidden. Miryum had been in the pay of the herders for some time. Her job was to find the seeker and destroy him/her. When she realised that Elspeth is the Seeker she knew her talents were not enough to do the job so she coerced Gahltha to come to Obernewtyn and 'befriend' Elf. Gahltha took a bit to coerce but by working on him after the raft scene, Miryum was able to set the coercion deep so that even he believed it was the Oldones telling him to help Elspeth. While Gahltha thinks he is helping Elspeth to do the right thing, he has a trigger set in his brain that will make him turn on her before she can stop the Weapon Machines. Miryum realising the rebellion was not going in her favour disappeared into the sunset so she wouldn't get caught.
This sounds nuts even to me, but I thought I'd give it a go. ;D

Great to see that a few of you gave it a go - thanks for the fantastic entries! :D I really like how you all approached it so differently. :) After much thought, the winner of this round is Arwen - I like how the theory is tied into Gahltha's backstory, and I like the idea that his fear of water was established with the intention of it leading to Elf's death - great twist!
Thanks for entering, Cat and Deb - I really enjoyed reading your entries, and I like that you both had the idea that we don't know for sure that the Agyllians are the ones who convinced Gahltha to be Elf's guardian. (Of course, even if it was them, who knows if we can trust them... :P)
So, you're up to post a new challenge, Arwen! ;D

What is the significance of Gavyn and the reason the animals are so attracted to him, and call him adantar? What is his connection to the wolves, and why is it that he leads Rasial and the wolves into the Blacklands? (see pages 817, 920, 990 in TSK) Include why Gilbert sees Elspeth surrounded by wolves in a black and barren place in his dream.

(see pages 817, 920, 990 in TSK) Include why Gilbert sees Elspeth surrounded by wolves in a black and barren place in his dream.
I suspect that Atthis lied about Elspeth being the person destined to free the beasts. It is instead something that Atthis has ingrained in animals so they'll protect Elspeth, but the role is actually that of Gavyn. Gavyn is therefore seen with the wolves because they are helping to guide him through the mountains to reach the freerunning barud. Meanwhile, Elspeth will need to go into the mountains as part of her quest (to find the sign that was buried with Hannah Seraphim). This is the origin of Gilbert's dream about the wolves, as she will be surrounded, but will be safe once they discover that she is Innle, and an enemy of Ariel, who tortured some members of their pack.
As we know, adantar is a beastname which means something like 'link' or 'connection', and he is described as a beastspeaker/enthraller. He is called adantar because his Talent will help prevent the animals from fighting or eating each other as they make their way to the freerunning barud, and it will also enable him to control the wolves, which are otherwise highly dangerous.
I believe the freerunning barud is that taint-free place above the mountains around Obernewtyn, so they need to go through blacklands to reach it. This may be partly where the wolves come in, as I believe that Darga has been living with the wolves since the firestorm, so he will be able to find a safe path through the tainted land.

(see pages 817, 920, 990 in TSK) Include why Gilbert sees Elspeth surrounded by wolves in a black and barren place in his dream.
Throughout the books, wolves have been associated with Ariel. In the first book, he tortured the wolves to act as guard dogs in the first book, I think there have been a couple of times when Elspeth has been chased out of dreams by dream-wolves (and we know that Ariel was the one trying to get to her through her dreams) and Rushton was referred to as Ariel's wolf.
Thus we can see, that Ariel uses wolves as an instrument to exert his will.
Some other things we know; Rasial will find her death with Gavyn, which indicates that she won't make it to the free-running barud.
Elspeth will be surrounded by wolves at one stage.
Kella's owl went happily to Gavyn despite having been attached to her.
I contend that during Elspeth's quest, once she is far enough along that the destroyer can freely activate the weapons, Ariel will try to take Elspeth out (by which I mean kill her, not a date). He will use wolves to do this, thus she will be surrounded by wolves.
This is where I think Gavyn comes in. Just like with Kella's owl, he will make the wolves loyal to him and have them stop their attack, thus allowing Elspeth to complete her quest. However, the wolves are so brainwashed, that its not as easy as it would ordinarily be. He has to take them away from their trigger who is Elspeth. The only way to do this will be to travel into the blacklands, where they all die of rotting sickness. Rasiel goes with Gavyn knowing this, because it is her role to play in leading the beasts to freedom.
The beasts call Gavyn 'adantar' because he is their enslaver, they can not go against his will. This said, they have to like him, because that is his will. Think of lidgebaby and the misfits at the druid's camp, that's the idea I'm trying to get across. Maruman is immune to this because his mind is funny, thus he is the only beast who doesn't like Gavyn. I guess we're just lucky that Gavyn uses his powers for good.
Anyway, hope that's mildly plausible.

I enjoyed both theories, and I thank you both for having a go and entering. I agree that Darga has possibly been living with the wolves Zieria, and your theory does soudn very plausible, but I also enjoyed Sian theory with Gavyn stopping Ariel's wolves from attacking, so I'll go with Sian. So you're up Sian :D
