  Top stuff Frankie. I'd love a tutorial on how you get the shading so realistic or if you've got a tutorial from somewhere else could you send me the link please :).

  Ok, Photoshop painting will be my next tutorial :)
  Although, I'm not sure I have enough tips to make a whole tute, I've never read any about how to paint and I pretty much just make everything up as I go along :P
  
  Cat, I can think of about three different ways to get an outline of an image, I'll include that.
  And like I said Agyllian, I don't really have a special shading technique, I just kind of wing it :P
  I'll think about it though, see if I can come up with something.

  Thanks a bunch Frankie. I've been looking all over the place for one but so far no luck. I'm just missing that realism you get to come through in your picture. I think I'm choosing the wrong colours - anyway, you'll see what I mean when I get my caledar entry up :P.

  Anyway, I couldn't sleep last night so I started compiling an image out of...a lot of other images :P
  Here's what I have so far:

  I'm planning on painting over it so the colours/outlines don't particularly match up, but I'm starting to think it would be fun to try and make them. Or maybe make a patchwork picture by cropping/resizing a lot of other photos and sticking them together. Kind of like this one with no blending.

  It's looking great so far. I like your idea of making a sort of patchwork image - you could end up with quite an interesting image that way.

  Here's something I was working on this morning. It's driving me insane! ~:|
  
  It started off as a close-up of Elspeth and Maruman, but I can't decide how Maruman sould be placed :-/
  So I've got Elspeth roughly mapped out, but everytime I get started on the cat I just end up changing my mind a few minutes later and move him. I even tried mixing Gahltha or the wolves into the picture, but I don't think they really belonged there.
  
  Here are a few thumbnails of the picture. Keep in mind the cats are just reference photos hastily painted over to get the idea, when (if :P ) I finally do go over them they'll be in slightly different positions/shapes and different colours.

  I'm already thinking about another spot the cat could be in; extreme close-up, only one half of it's face in frame, looking directly forward. I do like to draw cats with only one eye showing :P
  
  Any suggestions? I'm just about ready for a complete picture overhaul...

  It's great as usual HotD :) I'm liking the red background and black cat, but I think the extreme close-up with one eye would work as well. I love how you drew Elspeth with her eyes looking away, like she's hiding something. Keep up the good work :D

  I love the pics, HotD - it's so hard to choose a favourite!
  
  I'm inclined towards the second one, but maybe with Maruman slightly smaller, or his head a bit lower or something... (I got the impression he's on her shoulder, but he seems maybe a little high up for that?)
  
  I also really like the third one, and your idea about having Maruman really close up - either way, I'm sure it's going to look amazing whatever you end up deciding! ;D Elf already looks fantastic!
  
  Oh, and how did you go with your previous picture? I only just saw the link now, and I'd love to see how it ended up!

  I like the third one, but it does change what the picture is about. However, I really like it, and I like the kind of scene it's showing.
  
  I agree with EI too, I love how Elspeth isn't looking straight on!
  
  They're really good no matter which way you chose, but I still like the cat in the background on the snow.

  Great as always HotD :D . I think each one has its merits but for me I think it is elfs hair that is drawing away from the pictures. That left side of hair, maybe if a few strands were floating over to the left might remove the boundary made by the hair and bring maruman into the picture more. Hmm, I don't know :-/ but I like the snow one best :nod:

  I see what you mean Agyllian and I agree, her hair is creating a kind of half line down the middle. Maybe instead of just a few strands if it was blowing away to that side a bit like she was standing in the wind. The hair on the right would probably need to blow over her face a little too, maybe a couple of strands across her cheek to her mouth? It would work well with the snow one I think because it would make her look more like she was standing outside. (I know, you can stand outside and it not be windy, but still :P )

  The only thing I really have against the snow one is that her shoulders are bare, so I can see her freezing to death! That said, I imagine clothes are on the agenda? :P Oh, and I agree with making her hair a little more wild - though I suspect the hair's not quite done as well? |:|
  
  And the snow one's winning me over more and more, the more I look at it. ;D

  Heart of Darkness, for some reason I feel like Maruman would be looking straight on... challenging danger, so to speak.

  WOW!! :O :O They are fantastic!!! What are the bottom two done in - watercolours? I love the black and white face on the right too, I can never get proportions right but that looks almost like a photo!

  Thanks :) The girl in the hoodie is my fav too.
  The girl on the windowsill is done using acrylic paint. The dog is done using pastels (conte crayons).

  Cameo, the girl is done using Acrylic paints. I have a funny way of painting though... kinda layer on layer with no blending.

  Tonight I learnt do what you all seem to be born doing - making pictures from others and using layers and recolouring and stuff and to put them together. I love all of yours - how do you do it so well?
  
  I was hoping someone would give me some tips. I only have paint and photo studio, and I'm teaching myself. I did these with the new avatar comp in mind.
  
  These three pics I did tonight (yay layers :roll: ) but I don't know how to make them look more...more.. togethery. Ok, um, make them look like one picture - blended better!
  
  Any advice?
  
  PS - they aren't too good, it's only my first try.

  They look good Erie :). I like the moon one with the 3 Guanette birds best. Maybe you would like to try gimp? It is kinda like photoshop but free. You can find a link to the download on the first page of this thread ~Link~
  
  It is a bit hard to get used to (I gave up for a month before going back to it haha) but once you've played around with it for a bit you start to figure things out.
