Ooh, sorry, didn't see this post or I would have replied sooner. The broken line indicates an informal relationship from which no children were born. So, Coralyn shares an unbroken line with Ranouf because although they were never formally bonded, they had a child together and she shares an unbroken line with Orrim because even though they had no children, they were formally bonded.
The reason for the distinction is that formalised relationships and relationships resulting in children are important for real life family trees and these are the ones you would find in a hall of records on Keltor if they kept such records.
I decided to put in Alene's relationships because even though they don't technically belong, they have a big impact on the story, which is what we're interested in, and because it's interesting to see the way she connects all the trees together (connecting the Acanthan line to both Coralyn's and Fulig's).
