  I was reading a post on Kristin Cashores blog and took notice of her mention of a French Museum that had a tapestry series involving a Lady and a Unicorn. Which immediately made me think of Ember and the legend of the Unykorn...
  
  The tapestries sort of relate to the books too, (although I think I may be stretching it). They are about the senses and Glynn is tone deaf, Ember is going silver blind... and I believe love/desire plays a role in the legend itself about Shennavyre. (It's been too long since i last read these books!)

  I know that Isobelle is quite widely travelled so I can't help but wonder if perhaps this was this series' inspiration, or if its just coincidence!

  I always wondered that too. Those tapestries were one of the few parts of Art History I could enjoy :P
  
  I always liked the idea that IC had woven the ideas in the tapestries in with a Sleeping Beauty kind of myth (the frozen in ice thing etc)...
  
  On the topic of the tapestries, Tracy Chevalier wrote a book about them/the making of them (it's a fiction book, but she knows her history, so it's quite worth the read)

  If you reread, I think it's Darksong(???) The tapestries are actually mentioned in the books in a segue or maybe two. My Mum got one of her art books out and showed them to me when that part came up.
  At any rate, a boy and a girl hitch a ride with a trucky to get to the museum and then they end up getting kicked out for looking too scruffy.
  
  I'm sure the tapestries must have been part of the inspiration, but I just feel that the books are too rich for that to have been all there was too it. IC is a master of having layer upon layer upon layer of plot and I think there's bound to be as many layers to her inspiration as there are to her stories.

  It is darksong that the tapestries are mentioned in, and there is one segue section where it shows them from both the couple's point of view and the security guard's.
  
  I think it seems likely that IC already had an idea for the series, probibly involving the Unykorn, but that the tapestries may have been the inspiration for Shennavyre.
