I'd pronounce it Al ee thee a
hmm i need a name for the kind of king guy in my novel. he is known as the steward but doesnt really have any power. he is weak, drugged out, can see the future and is in love with the man who is taking all his power from him. he is very skinny, has mousy brown messy hair and beard. He's about 30 years old. at the moment his name is angus, but i dont know if it fits. i dont want a name too outrageous or hard to pronounce. Just a name that fits... any thoughts?
um what about Mahli? which means weak or
these which mean all seeing:
Alaric
Vishnu
I like Alaric. :)
Or there's -
Ryan (which means 'little king'), Alberic, Elroy, Leroy, Raj, Rori, or Duncan.
I like Alaric... it reminds me of Ulrich, a name I have also been considering.

I like Alaric, it has a sort of ring to it, like it's kinda hard to say, though not too hard, so you wouldn't say it much, and you would think it goes with someone with power, so you get a surprise when its someone who doesn't.
Alaric was deprived from the Gothic name Alareiks which means "ruler of all".
well there you go
i need a name for a character in my story i have just come up with, i name i have at the moment is Vider, but its not quite right. she is an evil old crone but is very magically powerful so can change her appearence at the click of a finger. she is one of the thirteen fairies, (she is the thirteenth) and is full of hate. she likes to control everything and everyone and gets extremely angry when the other fairies try stop her doing what she wants. dhe is the most powerful fairy.
i think thats all about her.

how about something really ordinary like Jane or Mary. That often works as a good conterpoint to the personality of a character.
hmmm, thats a good idea, anyone got really ordanary names? |:(
i like the more exotic type names so i don;t really think of them.

Well, I'm not sure abotu ordinary names, but if you want slightly unusual names...
Myna (tropical bird), Selina (goddess of the moon), Adina (slender and delicate), Anala (fire, wind), Nastusia (stronger than death), Alina (alone), Niara (one with high purpose), Luciana (light), Vanna (golden), Keturah (incense), Imara (strong, resolute), Akiha (autumn leaf)
i rather like Niara, because my character has very high purpose (if you want to read about her then pop over to my thread and she is in Don't Prick Briar Rose.)
and now i need another name for a different character - it is a bird, golden and can talk it is considered lucky and if it is watching over you then you are safe - help please.
Male or female? Weird or Common?
Have some random names:
Female:
Aderyn - Welsh for bird
Sarika - Sanskrit for parrot
Dalia - Lithuanian for fate/luck
Male:
Fulton - Meaning related to bird-catchers [act]shrug[/act]
Yoshi ( :P ) - Japanese for good/good luck
Ok I have no idea for male names . . .
i don't know if its male or female, but i guess male because generally female birds are brown

I like Aderyn, because that seems like it could be either male or female. :)
Or there are the names that I suggested up ^^^^^ there: Vanna (golden) and Myna (tropical bird).
There's also:
Kotori (bird of luck)
Falih (lucky)
Arancar (golden)
Aurel (golden)
Zarrin (golden)
Ephron (bird)
Kakali (voice of a bird)
i like Aderyn too, and also Aurelia and Zarrin .
thanks so much for helping me.

ok people, I need a population of a small town. Just a round about number for a farming town :) also, I need the names of a grandma and grandpa who live in England after a war. Can people please help? I am totally stuck!
How small? There is a town just south of me that has a 'welcome to' sign that anounces it's population as 8. Or, there's a town just west of me that's got a population of 200 or so... though it might have gone up since the oil boom :-/
As for grandparents... which war? WWI or II? The war of the roses? The time period matters, as names change from decade to decade.

Some rough indicators of what sort of population you might want for different types of small towns;
The 'small town' I used to live in had a population of 4000 (doesn't really sound small, but I could easily walk from one end to the other). Had one main street (shopping strip type thing) and another main road which was mostly for traffic moving straight through to the larger towns. It also managed to support two kindergartens, two primary schools and a highschool because it was the centre of education for a lot of the farm kids - I'm seriouse, half the school went home on the bus.
There was another town close by which consisted mainly of a petrol station and a few houses, it's population was about 100 (which included a couple of the surrounding towns)
If you want your town to be able to support a highschool but not two primary schools, you'd probably aim for a size of about 3000 and if it just wants a regular sized primary school, I'd probably suggest 1500-2000. If it's smaller than that, you could probably still have a primary school but you'd start having so few students that you would need to go into special ways of running classes etc.
These indicators might not seem so helpful if you're writing a historic story, but I tend to find that it's easier to estimate the population size by the amount of kids you want to have about. I think its easier looking at a section of the demographic and extrapolating outwards.

Thank You Sian! that is actually so helpful!!! think i've worked it out now thanks!
and Ama, after WW1 or WW2 it doesn't really matter, it's simply after a war, I haven't decided if I shall base it on an actual war or not :P
Okay, then for names you're pretty much wide open. You could go for the timeless names, like John and Sarah or for the more era-common names like Walter and Bonnie, depending on if you want to hint at what sort of decade your characters are living in or not.
Bambi, I'm not sure if you still need names, but I can list some names of my relatives/ancestors that were alive/born around WW1 and WW2 in Ireland (I would assume the names are pretty common to England at that time as well.)
Men: James, John, Michael (nickname Mickey), Seamus, Sean, Patrick, Edmund, Eamon, Joseph
Women: Bridget, Cassie (short for Cassandra), Winnie (short for Winnifred), Susannah, Geraldine, Ita, Kathleen
They're pretty ordinary names, but I would think that was the norm in that time period.

Ok, I'm back, I need a name for a young lord of France/ England. Must start with A, needs a middle name and last name is Banks. set in the late 1800's/early 1900's. I am struggling so bad!!!
Hmm... well, there's the really common old-ish names like Arthur, Alfred, Albert, Alexander, Alexandre and Allan. I think all of them would go alright with the last name of Banks. They seem formal and lordy so... hope this helps, bam! :)
