GAME ON!!!
I actually have a target, but I have an uncooperative story - so we'll see how that goes. I think I've set myself too hard (and too personal) a task..
I have a relationship, and a setting, and it's based on my own experiences. Once I get past that set up, however, it's all fiction. The problem is that there is no real story (conflict to be resolved) beyond the relationship. And I really need a story, or I'm going to drag my own experiences back into the writing (which I don't want to do - it creates too much of a Mary-Sue character, besides being kind of boring).
It sounds like a challenge on many levels. Good luck with it! We're here to provide cheers or cattle prods as necessary. :D
I'm sure you can handle it, Nef. Good luck.
I have a solution!! Of sorts ... I realised that there wasn't enough with the relationship I was building to do a whole story, AND the characters weren't the type to connect with, so I'm broadening the scope.
It will Also give me my story, as well as give me character dynamics!! ... But it will be bigger ...
Sounds exciting, Nef. Your ability to make day-to-day situations interesting has always been legendary. Looking forward to reading.
Isn't it fantastic when you suddenly find the missing element to a story? It's amazing how one tweak can suddenly bring everything to life. I'm looking forward to hearing more about this OberNo project of yours, Nef.
Hahahahaha!!!
I actually abandoned that idea for now. It's too half-baked and not going anywhere. I'm working instead on an idea that I've worked on in the past and have now got some new ideas to add to it. And two pretty set main characters (in my head).
It's going to along the lines of a fantasy novel ... but we'll see.
So, so far, I've got about 7800 words (very rough) and a rough plan for the first half of the story.
My goals for the summer (now until end of January) are:
1. 30,000 words in the current story (really I'm aiming for 50,000, but increments are good)
2. Polish off 3 short stories that have been nearly finished for the past year
3. Review story plans for several projects on the go.
I don't want to start anything, I want to finish things.
I have one request - keep on at me. Ask me to post, ask me how much I've written, demand updates! I need to be accountable.
Well then [act]prods[/act] GET ON IT
lol - this week I will reach 10,000. That's the plan (2200 words is doable in 4 days). Next week, I'll try for another 10,000 ...
And will post snippets, I trust. And full stories so we can help you edit when they're done!
You should see the mess I have right now - I'm massacring the remains of a previous story and keeping the good bits.
I'm having trouble with voice/tone. I'm probably going to write a lot of rubbish just getting into character.
Perhaps I'll write a few character studies ...

Looking forward to reading
Today is almost over, where is our promised 2200 words? [act]waves cattle prod about[/act]
This is why OberNoWriSu is so good: you can choose your own projects and not feel as though you're cheating somehow. I love the idea of finishing things off, Nef.
How's it going, by the way? Any proof to show us?
I really do need to get my hands on a cattle prod, but all I've found so far is those cattle props in Vestie's Prodders thread, thanks to the autocorrect on my work iPad. Oh well - might as well work with what I have...
[act]releases a few inflatable cattle props in Nef's thread[/act]
If you don't start writing soon, they'll start releasing air and making annoying high-pitched sounds that you can't stop. Oh yes.
Sionainn - I have until the end of the week!!!
*dodges cattle prods* off to write!!!
I'll put some stuff up today. So far I'm working on chapters 1,2 & 3.
Pshh, I totally know what day of the week it is. I didn't get myself mixed up at all. [act]waves hand about[/act] So not good enough.
POSTING!!!! on my prodders thread.
It's an oldie, but I just like this character.
Question. At 18, why would/did you want to move away from home? My girl wants to escape - but she's really got little to escape from. I'm trying to articulate it ...

I wanted to move out because I was ignored by whole childhood. Funny thing was my brother and sister who were my mum's favourites were the ones who moved out and I stayed at home till after I was married. o_O
I moved out at 20, so a bit later but close enough. For me it was just wanting to make my own decision. Escaping from parents looking over your shoulder and trying to fit in to someone else's household when you were just about ready to start your own. Escaping childhood - because you're ready for maturity.
Maybe the fact that there's nothing to escape is a good enough reason in itself. Your life might be running in an rut but if it's a pleasant one, sometimes it's difficult to see that you need to break out of it in order to grow.
I moved out for reason better left unsaid, but I had always assumed that moving out after highschool was just a thing people did anyway. It is just that whole freedom thing. Spreading your wings. Finally being considered an adult and being able to make your own choices and decisions (I know in this economy it is simply not feasible for most these days but . . . hey it's fiction were talking about here . . . the point is pretending we live in a better world).

Thanks for that! My girl gets kidnapped, but I wanted her to want get out (but be too lazy to escape).
So I reached 10,000 words - but does it count if some of them still need to be typed up (they're in my notebook - I find it easier to physically write stories as I work my way into them ...)
More posted on Prodders anon ...
Hand-written words totally count, so congratulations on your 10,000! There's something so satisfying about writing things by hand, isn't there? I love to do edits on print-outs because all of those scribbles and arrows and re-written words feel so much better when they're done by hand.
Well done, Nef. Excellent progress :).
