oo, tricky [img]http://s3.images.proboards.com/smiley.gif" alt=":)" border="0"/> Well i can't really explain where the $1 is, but i'll try...
right. Of their $30, the waitress gives each man back a dollar, which adds up to $3.
The waitress keeps $2.
$2 + $3 = $5. 25+5=30.
the dollar hasn't really gone anywhere. It's just disappeared in a weird mathematical equation thingy [img]http://s3.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif" alt=":P" border="0"/>
I guess that answer's close enough ..
Actual answer is: The $1 doesn't exist.
how can it not exist? where did that $1 go? or wasn't it there in the first place? i require clarification.
there was never a missing $1, there was an extra $2. the $2(from the waitress) is included as part of the $27. $29 is $2 more than $27(what they had paid in total after the waitress gave each of them back $1), the fact that $29 is one less than $30 is irrelevant.
this is a riddle that microsoft used to ask some of their prospective employees at interviews.
there are four men standing at one side of a wooden bridge on a very dark night. it would take one of the men 1 minute to cross, another 2 minutes, another 5 minutes and the last 10 minutes. the bridge is only strong enough to support two of the men at a time. each group that crosses the bridge must carry the torch with them. what is the fastest way for the men to cross the bridge (fastest combination of men travelling there and back with the torch)? and how many minutes will it take?
I know the answer to that one is 17 minutes, but I can't remember how it all works out.
I did this one at a school camp once, and I worked it all out... and now I can't remember it [img]http://s3.images.proboards.com/sad.gif" alt=":(" border="0"/>
Argh, now everything just adds up to 19, and I know that's wrong...
how do u know that that's wrong?
nopes. doesnt work. galligaskins, read the puzzle i posted again. ur answer doesnt meet the criteria.

Argh, now everything just adds up to 19, and I know that's wrong...
im pretty sure the answer is 19 so ur probably right. do u kno how to do it in 19?
I've done this before, can't remember now ... but ..
I don't think it's 19 mins
I think the answer is 17 mins ..
because I remember the answer is 2 less than the 'logical' answer,
which I tried doing (the logical one), and it adds to 19 mins
I remember there is a swap of who's carrying the torch ...
Still trying to figure it out ...
** half an hour later **
WahOO! I figured it out! Answer IS 17 mins!
(Side A) 1,2,5,10 ------------------------------------------------------- (Side B)
1 & 2 cross = 2 mins
(Side A) 5,10 ------------------------------------------------------- 1,2 (Side B)
2 comes back = 2 mins
(Side A) 2,5,10 ------------------------------------------------------- 1 (Side B)
5 & 10 cross (2 gives torch to them) = 10 mins
(Side A) 2 ------------------------------------------------------- 1,5,10 (Side B)
1 comes back (torch is given to 1) = 1 min
(Side A) 1,2 ------------------------------------------------------- 5,10 (Side B)
1 & 2 cross = 2 mins
(Side A) ------------------------------------------------------- 1,2,5,10 (Side B)
Therefore: 2 + 2 + 10 + 1 + 2 = 17 MINUTES!

Yay go Linja - well worked out [img]http://s3.images.proboards.com/cheesy.gif" alt=":D" border="0"/>
well done. i thought the answer was 17mins in the book but couldnt remember how.
Here's one that can be kind of annoying:
A tramp is sitting on a bench in a park when a man comes up to him and says 'I'll give you a hundred thousand dollars if you'll allow me to amputate your left arm'. At first the tramp says no, but then he thinks - 'well, I don't really use my left arm that much, but I could really use that money' so he agrees to do it. He has the arm amputated and goes off with the money. The man wraps the arm up carefully and posts it to another man, who unwraps it, looks at it, wraps it up again and posts it to another man who unwraps it, looks at it, wraps it up again and posts it to another man who unwraps it, looks at it and throws it out. WHY?
I swear there is a logical answer ;-)
Nope. Sorry, I haven't been on for ages...think about the possible occupations

maybe the arm is sent to hospitals and its not the right colour? (to sew on someone without an arm) or maybe they want a right arm not a left arm?
Have these riddles been posted before? (I only read the two most recent pages) I've just noticed this page existed, so I hope someone will check it:
1. There is a blizzard, and a man is trapped in it. He finally stubles on a hut. He goes inside to find that there are three items. One is a candle, one is a wood-burning stove, and the third is a kerosene lamp. The man reaches into his pocket to find tha the has only one match. What does he light first?
2. I don't have any legs yet I can run. What am I?
3. What is certain to go out the tighter it is locked in?
4. In a certain city, 2% of all the people living in this city have unlisted phone numbers. If you looked through a phone book and chose 100 names, how many of the people whose names they belong to have unlisted phone numbers?
5. An electric train is heading west. A wind is going at 18/kph. What direction is the smoke going?
AND
6. In America there was a certain baseball game. The final score of that baseball game was 1-0, but not one man made it over the home plate. How is this possible?

um I think I can guess the answer so some of those riddles:
1. The Match
2. A computer maybe.
3. A candle
4. None
5. No smoke, electric train. (I almost said a direction, then I read the question again)
6. Don't know much about baseball, so no idea. I'm sure the answer is prolly quite obvious though, prolly don't even need to now baseball
I'll pay q.3 (it was very close - it was fire), the only ones you need to figure out is q.2 and q.6. For q.6, re-read the question. You don't need to know about baseball - just read the question very carefully.

um q2 another guess, maybe a tap or water
Q6. After reading the question, I'm guessing it was one woman. (it says not one man) I'm a lot less tired than I was when I first looked at it.
Huzzah! Got it right in two guesses! Maybe they were too easy... I've got more...
1. A woman goes into a pet storeto purchase a parrot. The man tells the woman "I guarantee that this bird will repeat every word that he hears." Ten days later the woman goes back to the shop and demands her money back because the bird hasn't said anything. The man says " Aye, I didn't lie to you madam." And the man was indeed telling her the truth, all the truth, and nothing but the truth. How is this possible (2 answers).
2. An explorer once travvelled into the deep forests of Africa when he was captured by the natives. However, the natives were fond of logic problems, so they told the explorer (funnily enough in the explorers language), "We are allowing you to make one statement. If the statement is true, you will burn alive at the stake. If the statement is false, you will be boiled in a big pot of water." The explorer, however, was very smart and enjoyed logic prblems. He made a statement, and the natives were forced to let him go. What was the statement? (2 answers)
3. A man carrying three croquet balls comes to an old bridge. The bridge isn't very sturdy. The sign by the bridge says that it can't hold more than 175 pounds (sorry, I've gotten this from a book published in America). The man weighs 171 pounds, and each of the croquet balls weigh 2 pounds. The man merely shrugs and carries the three croquet balls across the bridge and makes it across to the other side. Why doesn't the bridge collapse?
1. The parrot was deaf
2. That he was allergic to water?
The first answer was one of the correct answers, but the second is wrong. Actually, for the second question, the answers are in the question.
1. The woman is mute?
2. "You will not burn me alive at the stake" [img]http://s2.images.proboards.com/huh.gif" alt="???" border="0"/>
3. The man can actually fly [img]http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif" alt=";D" border="0"/> (lol, I have no idea!)
