Summary:Elspeth follows Erin to the Druid’s house. Waiting for the girl to return, Elspeth wonders at the storm raging outside. Fian had told her that
Firestorms were increasing on the coast and that there were no such storms in the
Beforetime. She worries about the chance of escape if there is indeed a Firestorm brewing. Kella had been sent to give a message to Gilaine. Jow had decided that the best time to make their move had been at the Druid’s house but they had not yet arrived.
Erin returns with her hand on a small knife, showing that she is wary of Elspeth. She then announces that Elspeth is to be
bonded that night to Relward, the Gatewarden. Elspeth, already knowing about the news, insults Erin and tries to distract her from the noises happening outside. Opening the door behind her, Erin is unaware that Kella and Jik stand in the doorway. Kella presses an arrow to the unsuspecting girl’s neck and Jik ties and gags her. Elspeth makes Erin think that as Gypsies, they aren’t meant to stay in one place and her father is waiting in Arendelft. She also leads a false trail for Erin to relay to the Druid. Hiding her in the trunk to make sure she was not found too soon, they go to the kitchen and find Jow waiting for them.
Waiting for a signal from Peter, the group get ready. Elspeth worries about Matthew, Louis, Domick and warning Rushton about the Druid. She contemplates that most of those at Obernewtyn are scarcely more than children and now would be a good time for them to grow up. Thinking about Maryon’s prediction, Elspeth gets impatient.
Jow returns with Peter and Gilaine, who says goodbye to the Elspeth, wishing her well. They leave the house, coming out in the street just as the rain pours down harder. Even through the storm, Jow is worried about the light and orders them to split up. Reaching the gate, Jow mentions two horses that were told to run as soon as they’re let out. They discuss the plan of using the thunder to disguise the noise of breaking the latch on the gate and Jow will distract the gatewarden with the runaway horses.
The horses get out, the distraction started and the group start running out in the open. They get caught by the gatewarden but Elspeth, being in physical contact with the man as he grabs her, using her
killing power at the back of her mind to render him unconscious. They escape through the gate and re-lock it from the outside. After disguising their tracks for some time, Elspeth orders the others to run. As soon as they reached the outside of Lidgebaby’s net, Elspeth sends a
probe to Domick, finding him waiting for them with Pavo. Falling over a tree branch, she sends for help, having used all her energy up. They reach the clearing with Pavo, Gahltha and Avra. Kella takes away some of the pain from Elspeth so that she can think clearly.
Looking towards the Suggredoon, the group sees that the river is swollen from the rain and the raft Domick has made for their escape is bobbing madly on the surface. They decide to wait till morning but see Darga running into the clearing. He sends that many
Funaga are coming. Having no other choice, they go to the raft and tie themselves to it. Finding that Gahltha won’t move and Jik knowing that the horse is afraid, Elspeth orders the horse to go back to Obernewtyn so that he isn’t caught by the humans. Domick cuts the rope that holds them to shore and they are swept away. Elspeth sees Gilbert on the shore and he calls something that she can’t make out. The rafters plunge into the mountain.

Lol I just noticed something: Page 119: “Gilaine opened a bundle…†Page 120: “The door swung open, admitting Jow, Peter, the older musician, and, to my surprise, Gilaine.†She rematerialised!
By the way, does anyone know what happened to chapters 3 & 4 of Obernewtyn? That section is almost finished, we're just missing those two.
